Enough with the cliché talks already. This is a romantic comedy and a bloody good one at that. It has some really good moments when it makes fun of the clichés; some of which prove to be true and some of which are disproved-all in a hilarious fashion. Yes, the leads are going to fall for each other. Of course there are things individuals (movie-goers/critics) might feel should have been done differently. But please, do not talk about how it could have been better, had Katherine’s character Abby not fallen for Gerard’s character Mike. Oh, yes, I read such a viewer comment. This is a romantic comedy, people! If you have any objections on the concept, read on at your own risk. Because well, in this movie we have misunderstandings, fights, funny/embarrassing moments, romantic realizations…the works. But they all come within a fun script and two really gorgeous & extremely funny leads.
Abby is an organized, control-loving T.V. producer who is big on her principles and is a hopeless romantic- though she tends to let go any sort of spontaneous act when it comes to dating.
Mike is the host of The Ugly Truth: he gives out the most “practical” relationship advice: Men can’t be tamed or trained, all women need to do to get a relationship is to get thin, pretty and…yeah just thin and hot will do it.
So when Abby’s boss hires Mike and she is forced to work with him, it is a nightmare for her-well, only temporarily. It turns out Mike’s theories do work and she lands herself her new, hot neighbor Colin (Eric Winter). But then of course things are never that simple. Abby, despite her compulsive traits is fun. Mike, despite making vulgar and shallow comments on relationships and sex, has a loving relationship with his nephew, has had his heart-broken and seems to be wanting Abby-which definitely wasn’t the plan.
So? What do we have here? An actually nice, romantic fella who has been hurt so now he is getting a kick out of playing the sexy jerk. Oh, yes you have seen it before. You also have a girl who seems to be able to let go once she is with the right guy; a guy who likes her the way she is. Yep, we saw that too. It is an R-rated rom-com, which is definitely not a first for the genre. But we are not striving for a 100% originality here. The movie is full of great hilarious one-liners and lovely performances. You don’t really have to find it realistic. Of course it does seem far-fetched that the misunderstood romantic will look like Gerard Butler or your co-worker will be as hot as Katherine Heigl. That is not the point. The point is the movie is funny with eye-candy. Just sit back and enjoy. Why I think guys will like it? Here are some random quotes. Oh, hell I laughed at them too!!!
———————————————————————————————————————————————-
Mike: You’re all about comfort and efficiency!
Abby:What’s wrong with comfort and efficiency?
Mike: Well nothing, except no one wants to fuck it.
———————————————————————————————————————————————-
Abby: My cat stepped on the remote.
Mike: Well, be sure to thank your pussy for me.
——————————————————————————————————————————————
Abby: I am your producer.
Mike: I like women on top.
More on Gerard:
Arzu says
I believe this is the best romantic comedy written with clever sence of humor. It’s not like you see two people and sth happens along the way and they find each other in the end. This is not reality. This movie is really talking about the ughly truth and that’s what we live in , so girls do not eat chocolate and stay away from chips. You “may” find the perfect one for you.
zoeyclark says
Yeah. But of course if men can play it shallow, so can we. The Stairmaster rule works both ways. It is just that we like the brain muscles developed too. Just like a stipper meeting the librarian is fantasy come true, we love the romantic in one hot buddy. Why do you think we love Mike Gerard) ? ; )
Hilal says
I think the film makes a really valid point: should you try to act differently to impress someone or should you just be yourself?
zoeyclark says
the answer is just lovely: you should be yourself. mike falls in love with the real abby and abby falls in love with mike’s true character- no the show he puts on most of the time…
as romantic as the concept is, boy- i really want that elevator scene with a guy as hot as butler. oh I also have some parts to add from my imagination as well…
Hilal says
who wouldn’t want that??????????* 🙂
pelin says
? think this film is amazing ,gerard ,too.? believe that it is really an ugly truth:)unfortunately
zoey says
Well, the truth was ugly for a while but then it turned out to be pretty beautiful for our leading characters. I mean the lovely and gorgeous Abby got to be with the funny and gorgeous Mike, who turned out to be much more sensitive than he first led us to believe. And which is ugly about that?
I think in real life the truth is ugly. I mean how many guys have you dated that even looked like Mike? I didn’t. And how romantic Gerard Butler is in real life is also very questionable.
pelin says
you are right. they are lovely.but ? talked in general.:)? hope a person who ? will date with can be like this:)the story ,is perfect actors and actresses are perfect.what can ? say? it is impossible to reject the beauty of the film.
zoey says
I know, right? I just hope there will be more romantic comedies like this 🙂 And fingers crossed, for our own Mike-obviously I want the Mike who falls for Abby. Not the Mike with the “twins”. He is only good for a one night stand 😉
pelin says
this is an intersting comment ? think:)
Ifaz says
Nah nah nah, i thought Gerard Butler was funny.
The reasons i did not like it:
Katherine Heigle was annoying.
The trailer was better than the movie which kinda tricked me.
The movie was pretty much about this 2 leads. When a movie is a start to finish typical romcom, I think it is necessary to focus on the other characters so that the audience at least stays awake.
All in my opinion though.
zoey says
I was awake. Was it the hormones, then? Just kidding. If hormones were enough, I’d have more than liked 300 which I didn’t. It just had the effects and the background and the…Wait, that was it. It is just a personal opinion. My sense of a great film is Law Abiding Citizen. I really prefer that to any graphic novel adaptation, to be honest.
As for this film; Katherine’s character was annoying but I really liked how “Mike” couldn’t use his usual ways when he actually liked the girl. I don’t know about you, but this happens to me a lot. Sure, picking someone up you just met is really not a problem. But the moment you care, you just become more natural and less cool. I really hate that about me. So while I find Mike to be a physically&personally unrealistic character ( I haven’t seen a guy like Gerard Butler’s Mike in real life- including the looks, the emphasis on family, wicked sense of humor, and the cynicism that hasn’t lost the romantic part yet? Please. If even if I found him, he wouldn’t be into me. That’ real life. In that sense, Stardust is more realistic even with all the witches going on. But yeah, Mike had great insights into the male mind and I had a blast.; )
p.s. I hate control freaks but Katherine is just gorgeous.
Ifaz says
Just so you know, 300 was a graphic novel adaptation. The lines are way too cheesy in 300 but that’s the way it’s supposed to be. And Zack Snyder, director of Watchmen directed 300. I like this kind of exploitation flick with cheesy visuals and lines, Sin City is an example.
I think I didn’t like Ugly Truth because I’m a guy.
zoey says
Hey, did mention in my previous reply that 300 was a graphic novel adaptation. I much prefer Watchmen. But still, I like movies like Troy or Braveheart a lot better than 300. I like my epic but I don’t like the cartoony feel of 300. The Watchmen’s visuals rocked because it had much more going on than just a blue screen. Plus, some lines were just beyond awesome. You know how much I enjoyed watching Rorschach.
P.S. You might be right about not liking it because you are a guy.
Sophie says
I really enjoyed the movie. The screenplay is not the usual dull comedy that generally irritates me because really too far-fetched. The dialogues are sharp, irreverent and make you pee in laughter. Gerard (the character) is fantastic, a rough and irresistible brute that has the courage to say what many men actually think. Certainly not all men are so primitive, but if women had not undergone a brainwashing that leads them to expect the prince charming, things would certainly be less complicated. For both sexes. I acknowledge that it is a comedy that makes more sense in a society like the American one, because in Europe things are less straightforward. Personalities in America are more “simple” that in Italy (for example), where men are yes very “showy” in their courtship, but in reality very feminine in their expectations. They stop you on the street but would like to be courted and flattered. They prepare and rub themselves worse than a star of the forties. But this is another story… Gerard has good comic timing and his facial expressions are priceless. Irresistible scene where Gerard assists Katherine in the call to harpoon her “perfect man”, because now I know that those faces are the real Gerard’s faces – in interviews he’s the same 🙂
Maybe the only thing I would say is that Katherine Heigl is not the same height, she is good but nothing compared to Gerard and there is no chemistry between them. How could there be? The film stands almost entirely on his shoulders. In fact the most annoying are those scenes where they kiss because they are not credible at all, he doesn’t like her and she doesn’t like him – and this in a supposed comedy is really a bit ‘ self-defeating. Actually I haven’t seen Gerard in action with other actresses (or maybe I don’t remember) but I am led to believe that he is better than that…
Anyway, the movie is really fun and would recommend it even to persons who can’t stand the comedies.
zoey says
Glad you enjoyed the film. Gerard is truly a versatile actor. He can do musicals, dramas, action, romance and voila: comedy.
I think the kissing scene was OK- at least I like how it started. Katherine practically jumped the guy and that’s what I’d have done:) OK, my real life fantasy reactions to Gerard aside, that scene could have been longer, better and more passionate. Maybe it wasn’t about Gerard not liking Katherine. Maybe it is Katherine’s husband being on the set. I don’t know if he was but if I were a guy, I wouldn’t be able to freak out a little bit about my wife making out with Butler. Yes, she is an actress and these are the modern ages but hey, if he has seen 300, he has every right to freak;)
I think Katherine was OK. I mean they needed to make her character restrained and stuff. But she is defintely better at drama or comic situations that are supposed to make you smile but not crack you up. Have you seen Grey’s Anatomy? I think she made a great couple with Jeffrey Dean Morgan (who Hillary Swank got to kiss in P.S.I love you where she also kissed Butler. Damn, some women are just lucky).
Gerard is funny, charming, mischievous and well, downright awesome. This movie is as fun as a romantic comedy can ever get.
Did you see Law Abiding Citizen by the way?
Sophie says
Actually I don’t like Katherine Heigl much. I think she’s little bit a boiled potato. But are tastes. She’s pretty and pleasant enough. It’s that in front of Butler she just disappears. And it’s not the character it’s just her. Yes in Grace Anatomy the chemistry with Jeffrey Dean Morgan was deeper maybe because of the tragedy behind. It’s always more simple simulate tragic events and devastating feelings (I think). And then maybe simply she finds Morgan more attractive…
Law abiding Citizen incredibly has not yet released in cinemas here but it seems quite interesting to me. Should arrive in august.
zoey says
Hey. Sorry, I just asked you about Jeffrey on another post. I hadn’t received this one yet.
You should watch the trailer of Law Abiding Citizen. I have a thing for revenge tales: guys going after the men who harmed their loved ones…You get depth, action and humainty all at once. I have a whole series on revenge movies.
Ha ha. I don’t know Katherine Heigl’s taste exactly but I saw her husband and he is definitely not my type. So if that’s what she calls hot, she might even find Morgan and Butler unattractive. Each to her own.
By the way, I saw The Bounty Hunter. Really fun movie. Has it arrived there yet?
Sophie says
Yes, I’m going to see it tonight. We will talk later about it:)
Oh and one of my fav revenge movies is Payback.
zoey says
Cool:)
And if you are talking about Mel Gibson’s Payback:

zoey says
yep:) Loved how Gerard’s character kept pretending he was a “manwhore” and a relationships guru, only to throw everything he said out of the window when he fell in love himself;)
