The Hangover Part 2 starring Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis & Justin Bartha

The Plot – with spoilers for the first movie

This time Doug (Justin Bartha) – the groom-to-be that the “wolfpack” Alan (Zach Galifianakis), Stu (Ed Helms) and Phil (Bradley Cooper) lost (in The Hangover), is a happily married man. It has been two years since the ultimate Vegas adventure where the gang had got roofied, ended up waking with a severe memory loss, minus a groom, minus a teeth (from Stu), plus a tiger, and plus a baby Moreover Stu had gotten married to the mother of the baby, a beautiful prostitute (played by Heather Graham).

Somehow, they had made it to the wedding.

This time Stu is getting married in Thailand, to a beautiful Thai bride. Having learned his lesson, he is vehemently against a traditional bachelor party. Despite Phil’s objections, Phil, Stu, Alan (despite a very unwilling Stu), Doug and the 16 year-old, Harvard pre-med Teddy -Stu’s brother-in-law-to-be- (Mason Lee) fly to Thailand and meet the girls. The problem is, Alan has absolutely hated Teddy. But Stu naively thinks everything is in control, since there won’t be a party. But Phil talks him into having one drink at the beach. One beer can’t hurt right?

But the next day, Phil wakes up on the floor of a dodgy hotel room. Alan’s head was shaven and Phil has a ridiculous tattoo on his face. There is no sign of Doug, and they find a finger with a Harvard ring on it. There is also a weird monkey in the room. They can’t remember anything and Stu is about to have a heart attack over what might have happened to Teddy. Oh, and they find Chow -the ridiculous guy from the first movie (Ken Jeong). What the hell are they going to do now?

They establish that Doug is safe and sound at the hotel, so it is up to the three of them to re-track their actions from last night, find Teddy, deal with Chow and Chow’s enemies, the havoc they caused in Bangkok streets, monks and more…

Is it a match for The Hangover?

Writing a good comedy is really hard. Writing a comedy such as The Hangover is even harder. I laughed my butt off through the entire movie, and I don’t usually like it when things get crude (except maybe when Todd Philips writes it). So undeniably, my expectations were high. While I had a good time at the theater last night, I was pretty disappointed that I didn’t get any laughing cramps.

Now, the movie is entertaining. I am not going to say I didn’t have any fun. I liked the references made to the first movie. “It has happened again…”, “The roof!”. The drug dealing, smoking monkey was fun to watch. Watching the gang being beaten by a monk was funny. But…. The magic wasn’t just there this time. It was cruder, darker and this time Zach Galifianakis annoyed me most of the time. And am I the only one who thinks Stu definitely needs some therapy?

It is definitely watchable. It is just not that great.

Currently 7.0/10 on IMDB. I give it a 5.0. If I don’t compare it to the first, it gets a 6.0.

Due Date starring Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis. Feat. Juliette Lewis, Danny McBride & Jamie Foxx.

Peter Highman (Robert Downey Jr.) is a successful architect on a business trip who can’t wait to get home to Los Angeles and be there for his wife Sarah (Michelle Monaghan) when she gives birth. All it should have taken was a simple first class ride. Unfortunately Peter met Ethan Trembley (Zach Galifianakis) a “weird” guy who claims to be 23 years old, uses dope for a medical condition and wants to be an actor.

Peter suddenly finds himself on the no-flight list and with no suitcase and no wallet. Ethan comes to his rescue by offering him a ride in his rental. A desperate Peter agrees but of course he just might under-estimated how irrational and weird Ethan might be. More things go wrong leading to hilarious moments.

As the story progresses, the audience starts to wonder whether Peter will able to reach Los Angeles in one piece and/or without killing Ethan…

Due Date is 2010-dated comedy from the director of hilarious films The Hangover and Old School. With 3 other co-writers (Alan R. Cohen, Alan Freedland & Adam Sztykiel) on board, Todd has written and directed a fun road comedy starring Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis.

Due Date is not as hilarious as The Hangover. Be ready for that. It probably won’t give you that many laughing cramps. But despite a slowish start and some not-so-funny moments, it is a movie that will entertain you and at some parts, it will make you laugh your butt off.

I started enjoying the movie a lot more after the initial 30-35 minutes. While I am not sure Ethan’s “method” for sleeping was really that funny by itself, the dog imitating the owner was hilarious. And the following morning, the movie tunes up its comedy and with the brief addition of Jamie Foxx’s character, it stays hilarious.

My advice? Some parts might be a little dragging but watch it anyway. It is worth your time.

Favorite scenes:

–          The “coffee” at Darryl (Jamie Foxx)’s house.

–          Ethan’s implications about Darryl and Peter’s wife.

–          Everything right before and after Mexico.

Favorite lines:

Ethan (on when Darryl ran into Peter’s wife): February? 9 months ago?

Darryl: 9-10 months ago.

Ethan: 9.

**

Peter (to Ethan): I’m sorry we drank your father.

Ethan: That’s OK. There’s still plenty of him here. Darryl only made 3 cups of coffee and there is about 8 cups of my dad left here.

**

Peter (on the phone to his wife’s voice mail): Ever-faithful husband calling from West Texas. Just checking in…. I actually talked to him (Darryl). He told me about the lovely weekend you guys spent together in San Diego………   If there is something you need to tell me…so that I don’t get surprised in the delivery room…

**

Ethan (throwing his father’s ashes): Dad, you were like a father to me!

**

Fun notes:

–          Co-writer Adam Sztykiel also wrote Made of Honor, a romantic comedy starring Michelle Monaghan and Patrick Dempsey.

–          Due Date features Juliette Lewis in a small role as Ethan’s drug-dealer. She also co-starred in Old School.

–          The Hangover Part II is in the works.

–          Danny McBride makes a funny and annoying appearance as the unhelpful Western Union guy.

Due Date, Love and Other Drugs, The Tourist: The 3 Comedies to Anticipate This Season

For the summer, my top 3 anticipated movies were Knight and Day, Inception and Salt. While I didn’t get to see Salt (I will, eventually), I had a great time with both Knight and Day and Inception. While Knight and Day – starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz– gave us the perfect combination of action-comedy-romance, Inception was one hell of a mind-bending ride with a killer script and equally impressive special effects.

For the colder days ahead, there are many good movies coming up, and I picked the three that looked the most fun and well, they also have terrific casts.

The Tourist – starring Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie

The Tourist starring Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie

The Tourist seems like to be in the same genre as Knight and Day, and it has even got one innocent, clueless character that thinking they met this gorgeous and exciting person from the opposite sex but instead of a mind-blowing romance- or at least they can get to that, they find out that sexy stranger is involved in a very complex career. In Knight and Day it was Cameron Diaz, a car mechanic on her way to her sister’s wedding when she met F.B.I agent on the run from the F.B.I agents trying to kill him, played by Tom Cruise. Here the hapless sap is Johnny Depp, and the agent/spy/whatever is the woman, very appropriately played by Angelina Jolie.

The movie seems to have a good sense of humor, great action sequences and exotic locations. Can’t wait.

Love and Other Drugs starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway

Love and Other Drugs starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway
Love and Other Drugs starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway

Pharmaceutical Rep. Jamie (Jake Gyllenhaal) is pretty happy with his life: he likes his job (=he makes good money), and he is even better with (seducing) women. However his successful yet fun & simple life  gets complicated when he finally meets a girl named Maggie (Anne Hathaway) who pretty much seems to be his female version: she is hot and she loves having sex for the hell of it. But there seems to be more to their attraction and eventually relationship to more than just sex. He really might be falling for her. But maybe there is a reason behind her carefree and fun-loving attitude, and it may be that will alter his life forever…

Don’t worry, I didn’t include anything in the plot that wasn’t suggested in the trailer. This ones seems to be a romantc comedy/drama.

This is Anne and Jake’s second collaboration, the first one being in the award-winning Brokeback Mountain, where Jake played a cowboy falling in love with another gay cowboy, at a time when gay relationships weren’t all that conventional and the two lovers end up marrying women, all the while staying in the affair through a long period of time. Jake’s character had married Anne’s character in the film.

And from the makers of the The Hangover, comes another comedy. While the trailer of Due Date didn’t make me laugh too hard, it entertained the hell out of me. And since I know the writer is a whiz at writing comedy and that both Zach Galifianakis (The Hangover’s Alan, Bored to Death’s Ray) and Robert Downey Jr. are more than apt at delivering perfect comedic performance, I believe it is safe to think that we might have stomach cramps from laughing because of this movie.

The plot: Peter Highman (Robert Downey Jr.) needs to get to his wife’s birth and unfortunately needs to let the weird passenger Ethan (Zach Galifianakis) join his ride. Of course there will hardly anything going normal…

Bored to Death starring Ted Danson, Jason Schwartzman and Zach Galifianakis
Bored to Death starring Jason Schwartzman, Ted Danson and Zach Galifianakis. 2009. Created by Jonathan Ames. Image via daemonstv.com

Jonathan Ames (Jason Schwartzman) is a writer who keeps talking about writing his second novel but he has not quite gotten around to it. He also occasionally writes for a magazine where he is good friends with his boss, George Christopher (Ted Danson). They hang out and even smoke pot together. And it is because Jonathan loves smoking pot and drinking white wine a little too much that his girlfriend Suzanne (Olivia Thirlby) moves out…

Jonathan’s best friend is Ray (Zach Galifianakis), a not-so-employed comic book creator. Ray has a girlfriend, Leah (Heather Burns), who has two kids of her own and his biggest problem is that they haven’t had sex for a couple of weeks. And even though Ray is probably not the most rational person around, he does find Jonathan’s new “job” insane.

Trying to cope with Suzanne leaving, Jonathan posts on Craiglist, saying that he is not a licensed, yet affordable and capable private detective. And he soon finds his first client…

This is a comedy series from HBO and even though it is not as daring as Sex and The City or True Blood, it is quite an entertaining show. I didn’t use to like Jason Schwartzman as he had made a habit of playing annoying parts;  but here he is perfect as Jonathan and with all his flaws, Jonathan is a likeable character. Ray is more amusing than hilarious but it works. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that Ray is played by Zach Galifianakis ,who you do remember from The Hangover where he plays Alan, the weirdest of the bunch. I just want to laugh as soon as I see his face.

Ted Danson is a charming actor who fits both comedy and drama equally well and his George is an original, interesting and often entertaining character.

This is not a sitcom and not exactly a laugh-out-loud comedy but each episode gets more entertaining and fun to watch. Episode 2 is definitely funnier than episode 1 and having seen 3 episodes so far, 3 is my favorite.

The show is created by Jonathan Ames who has named the leading character after himself. So I am guessing there is some relation to his real life.  The first season only has 8 episodes but the show will be back for season 2. Bored to Death is a really refreshing and sweet show for both men and women.

Fun note: In episode 2, the client that hires Jonathan is played by Saturday Night Live’s Kristen Wiig and  in episode 3, the movie Broken Flowers’s writer/director Jim Jarmusch makes a guest appearance as himself.

Give this refreshing show a shot. Rated at 8.3 on IMDB.
