The Box with Cameron Diaz and James Marsden
The Box with Cameron Diaz and James Marsden. Frank Langella gives creepy and mysterious a whole new meaning. So what would you do to get $1.000.000?

1976. A black box is dropped at the house of Norma and Arthur Lewis (Cameron Diaz and James Marsden), a happily married couple with a kid. They have the house, the car, the careers and things seem quite perfect in their front. Well, there are some problems. NASA employee Arthur fails to get his chance to become an astronaut and the private school Norma is teaching at -and their son goes to school to- cuts off his scholarship. And there is the almost life-long disability that has been bothering Norma, her constant limping due to her 4 cut-off toes. What comes in the form of a suggestion however is something they never could have anticipated.

A mysterious old man – Arlington Steward – with an extremely disfigured half-face appears at the door. Norma invites the man in, both shocked and intrigued. As it turns out, this is the man who dropped the mysterious black box at their door and he has come with a proposition. The box has a red button. If the couple presses it within 24 hours, someone they don’t know will die. And they will receive $1.000.000, if she and her husband don’t tell anyone. He leaves Norma shocked. Arthur doesn’t really take it seriously. But after a while, “what if” questions start to surface. What if that man is serious? What if they will actually be paid $1.000.000? Are they ready to be responsible to be responsible for someone’s death?

Eventually, money and financial troubles win over conscience and the button is pushed.

It turns out Arlington meant everything he said. But will their act have other consequences? Who the hell is Arlington Steward? Why are there so many people around them acting weird? Where does the money come from? Will they ever be safe?

Now, this movie has one of the most interesting premises I have ever run into. I found myself glued to the screen, wondering about Arlington, the money and feeling shocked at the fact that both Norma took the man seriously and easily pushed the button. How could a seemingly good person be that reckless of someone else’s life? The movie is slowly-paced, intending to build the tension and curiosity. While I can’t say I was bored, I couldn’t find the exciting explanation I was waiting for in the end. What happened and why will be shown to you to a certain extent. However a lot will left to your imagination and interpretation.

The screenplay is based on a short-story by Richard Matheson, called Button, Button. The movie is written for the screen and directed by Richard Kelly, writer and director of the cult hit Donnie Darko. While Darko is better-paced, I was more intrigued by The Box.

I am looking forward to read Matheson’s story and see how much/what Kelly left out.

I should say it is always good to watch Marsden and Frank Langella really crept me out.

6.0 on IMDB. I guess I can say 6.5-7 for some parts and 6.0 for other.

Favorite Line

Norma Lewis: What happens now? Will you make the offer to someone else?

Arlington Stweard:Yes, Mrs Lewis. And you can be sure it will be made to someone you don’t know.

Favorite Scene

Last conflict for the Lewises. My favorite part of the whole movie.

Iron Man starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeff Bridges and Terrence Howard

Robert Downey Jr. is the Iron Man. Just as smart, cocky and funny as any good superhero should be. Photo: filmdiziseyret.net

Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is living the good life. As the CEO of Stark Industries, the biggest weapons manufacturer of the United States, he is filthy rich. He is also good-looking, smart and has a wicked sense of humor; which makes him irresistible to women.

However one trip to Afghanistan makes him realize how insignificant all these are. He is kidnapped and all the soldiers protecting him get killed. His kidnappers want him to build his latest weapon for them and that he has a week to complete it. Moreover, his heart is only working because it is attached to a battery, stopping bullet splinters from going into his heart. But instead of building the weapon, he builds something that will help him escape: an iron suit that will later be improved by him to be more efficient, stylish and kick more bad ass. But his radical decisions back home, will cause more complications than he ever imagined…

The movie does a magnificent job of depicting Tony’s life style, his predicament, how he builds the suit to survive and the change of heart he goes through. It is full of action, humor and good effects. Oh, the acting is wonderful as well. I mean Jeff Bridges is playing Obadiah, Gwyneth Paltrow portrays Tony’s loyal and more than efficient assistant Pepper Potts and Robert was just born to be Iron Man. Terrence Howards also has a major part as Tony’s good friend Rohdey. His natural mischievousness and own naughty past are combined with his acting chops and voila: You get one of the most entertaining comic book adaptations ever.

Jon Favreau is typically known his on and off-screen collaborations with Vince Vaughn. The duo recently wrote and starred in Couples Retreat. Here Favreau steps away from his usual fast-talking, know-it-all character to direct Iron Man and I have to say, his direction is much better than his writing and acting. I enjoy watching him but he sure as hell kicks ass directing. He also has a small part as one of Tony Stark’s employees.

8.0 on IMDB, voted by over 158.000 people I’m giving it a solid 9. This is how entertainment is done, folks!

Iron Man is about how the suit and the hero were born. Iron Man has more action and even more worthy enemies. Check out the review and the trailers for the second film here.

11.14 starring Hilary Swank, Patrick Swayze, Rachel Leigh Cook and Barbara Hershey

11.14, starring Hillary Swank, Patrick Swayze, Henry Thomas, Barbara Hershey, Rachel Leigh Cook and Shawn Hatosy
11.14 is one of the smartest and most fun scripts ever. It keeps you intrigued and the details are just impressive. Don't miss this little gem from 2003. Photo from: http://i36.tinypic.com/3582ph2.jpg

Jack (Henry Thomas) is driving his car at night, drinking, when all of a sudden he crashes into something that seems to have dropped from upwards. He realizes it is a human, and he is dead. He can barely get him in his trunk before a woman drives by, and thinking he hit a deer. She thinks she will help him by calling the cop nearby. Soon after the woman leaves, the cop arrives. He soon realizes it is not a dear and sets out to arrest him- only he has no handcuffs left because there are already two people arrested at the back of the car…

These are not spoilers. This is what happens in the first 5 minutes of the film. The crash happens at exactly at 11.14. What our half-sober driver doesn’t know is that everyone is actually, unknowingly, related to this incident one way or the other.

The movie is full of unexpected twists and turns, full of fun characters and a lot of complications. It has a cast full of names we are familiar with: Barbara Hershey, Rachel Leigh Cook, Patrick Swayze, Hillary Swank, Colin Hanks (son of Tom Hanks), Henry Thomas and Shawn Hatosy.

What the movie does is to take the clock a little back every time so that we can see what the other characters were doing and why. It is like a more entertaining and immediate version of a butterfly effect. It is a fun ride full of unexpected acts of crime and people’s reactions to it.

I was watching Prizzi’s Honor on TV and not really liking it when I stumbled upon 11.14’s opening credits on another channel. From minute 1, I was hooked. Recommended.

7.3 on IMDB. Wouldn’t rate it any less. Written and directed by Greg Marcks.

This movie has a terrific ending. Below are 2 different lists movies with great endings:

Possession starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, Lee Pace and Michael Landes

Possession, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar
Possession, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar and Lee Pace. And you think your brother-in-law is problematic?  Image: iwatchstuff.com

Jess (Sarah Michelle Gellar) adores her loving and extremely romantic husband Ryan (Michael Landes). Her only problem is his brother Roman (Lee Pace), who couldn’t have been more opposite. He has been arrested for assault, he has violent tendencies and he is just creepy enough to make Jesse cringe. Moreover, he stays with the otherwise blissfully happy couple.

Jess’s life comes crashing down when a horrible accident ends both brothers in a coma. She can’t get used to life without Ryan but then something happens to make things even weirder. Roman wakes up, believing he is Ryan. He acts just like his brother. Jesse is more than disturbed by this but what the hell is she going to do when Roman is saying and doing things only Ryan could know?

Don’t let the genres -listed -on IMDB- for this movie fool you.  Completely ignore the “horror”, and rather than expecting a thriller, concentrate on the mystery, drama and romance part. If you do that, you have a nice film. It is a really disturbing situation Jess is in and you really feel her confusion and pain. She can’t understand if something paranormal is at work- can her husband’s soul somehow be in his brother’s body now? The love she has for Ryan and her regrets cloud her judgment and from then on things take some interesting turns.

Now, of course you see the twists and turns coming. The explanation is pretty much in front of you. But put yourself in Jess’ position and then the movie becomes an uncomfortably entertaining experience. I liked the performances; especially Lee Pace can very convincingly switch from psycho to sweetheart. Very good romantic drama.  Average thriller. No horror. Decide what you are in the mood for, and set your expectations accordingly. Based on a Korean film, so if you are allergic to remakes, do stay away.

P.S. I checked out the alternate ending. I couldn’t find the DVD but thankfully youtube came to rescue. I prefer the alternate version (it has more different scenes- not just the ending). It is more intense, true to the original Korean version. Let me know how you feel about the movie and which version you like best.
