The 68th Golden Globes – Best of Ricky Gervais

Ricky Gervais at 2011's Golden Globes: He was outrageous, politically incorrect and downright hilarious! image via tvverdict.com

If there is one thing good about not being a Hollywood star, it is that Ricky Gervais won’t get to joke about you at the Golden Globes. The guy is hilarious, but let’s face it, he is not gentle and he is definitely not politically correct. And we love him for it. But I am not sure I’d want to be at the receiving end of his jokes.

Here’re my favorite Ricky Gervais lines from the 68th Golden Globes – the words may not be exact but the punch lines are intact:

on Charlie Sheen:

–          It’s gonna be a night of partying and heavy drinking, or as Charlie Sheen calls it: “breakfast”. Wow, so… Let’s get this straight. What he did was he picked up a “porn star”, paid it to have dinner with him, introduced her to his ex-wife: “how do you do?” went to a hotel, got drunk, got naked, trashed the place while she was locked in the cupboard… that was a Monday! What did he do on New Year’s Eve?

on “The Walking Dead” Hugh Hefner and his 24-year-old bride-to-be:

–           Talking of the “Walking Dead”, congratulations to Hugh Hefner, who’s getting married at the age of 84 to 24-year-old beauty Crystal Harris. When she was asked why she was marrying him she said: “‘Cause he lied about his age. He told me he was 94.

on Robert Downey Jr.:

–           I love this next presenter. He’s so cool. He’s the star of “Iron Man”, “Two Girls and a Guy”, “Wonder Boys”… Sorry, are these porn films? “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang”, “Bowfinger”, really? Here… “Up the Academy”. Come on… He was in all those films, but many of you in this room probably know him best from such facilities as the Betty Ford Clinic and Los Angeles County Jail. Please welcome Robert Downey Jr.

on Jim Carrey, Ewan McGregor and “Scientology”

–          Also not nominated “I love you Philip Morris”. Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor: two heterosexual actors pretending to be gay, so the complete opposite of some famous scientologist thing. Um, probably. My lawyers helped me to get away with that joke; they’re not here.

on Tom Hanks and Tim Allen:

–          What can I say about our next two presenters? The first is an actor, producer, writer and director whose movies have grossed over three and a half billion dollars at the box office. He’s won two Academy Awards and three Golden Globes for his powerful and varied performances starring in such films as “Philadelphia”, “Forrest Gump”, “Cast Away”, “Apollo 13” and “Saving Private Ryan”. The other is… Tim Allen.

on The Tourist and the nominations of Angelina Jolie & Johnny Depp … AND Cher

–          It was a big year for 3D movies: “Toy Story”, “Despicable Me”, “Tron”. Seems like everything this year was three dimensional… except the characters in “The Tourist”. Uh, I feel bad about that joke. I… no… I’ll tell you what… I’m jumping on the bandwagon ’cause I haven’t even seen “The Tourist”. Who has? But, no… It must be good ’cause it’s nominated tonight. So shut up, ok? And I’d like to squash the ridiculous rumor going around that the only reason “The Tourist” was nominated was so that the Hollywood Foreign Press could hang out with Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie. That is rubbish, that is not the only reason, they also accepted bribes… No. All that happened was some of them were taken to see Cher in concert, how the hell is that a bribe? Really? “You wanna go to see Cher?” “No.” “Why not?” “‘Cause it’s not 1975.

on  Robert Pattinson and Olivia Wilde

–          The next presenters are very young, thin and beautiful. Which is just as well because they are presenting a category no one in America cares about: Best Foreign Language Film!

on Sex and The City 2

–          There were a lot of big films that didn’t get nominated this year, nothing for “Sex and the City 2”. I was sure the Golden Globe for special effects would go to the team that airbrushed that poster. Um, great job! Girls, we know how old you are: I saw one of you in an episode of “Bonanza”.

on Scarlett Johansson & Mel Gibson

Our first presenter is beautiful, talented and Jewish, apparently. Mel Gibson told me that. He’s obsessed. Please welcome Scarlett Johansson.

on Lost:

–          One of the biggest events on TV this year was the finale of “Lost”. One of my favorites. And all the questions were answered… yeah. I have to say, though, It was a complicated finale. I’m not sure I totally understood it all, but from what I can work out, I’m pretty sure the fat one ate them all.

–          **

  • Also one of my favorites, he presented Bruce Willis as Ashton Kutcher’s dad!

The Tourist starring Johnny Depp, Angelina Jolie & Paul Bettany
The Tourist starring Johnny Depp, Angelina Jolie & Paul Bettany. Feat. Rufus Sewell, Timothy Dalton & Raoul Bova.

Paris, France. Elise Ward (Angelina Jolie) is a mysterious, beautiful woman with the Scotland Yard after her.  The Yard is really after Alexander Pearce, who owes quite a sum in tax money. The investigation is run by John Acheson (Paul Bettany), who is obsessed by catching Pearce. His chief Jones (Timothy Dalton) is not all that pleased with how much the case is costing them.

Pearce is rumored to have gone under severe plastic surgery, so no one has a clue what he looks like. Knowing this, he sends Elise a note. He tells her to get on the train to Venice and sit down next to a guy that has his built and height. Elise picks Frank Tupelo (Johnny Depp). Tupelo is a math teacher from Wisconsin and is mesmerized by Elise’s beauty. Elise seems to like Frank too but she is more interested in using him get to Alexander, the love of her life.

This encounter leads them to a luxury hotel suite in Venice, and some fun action happening on the water…

The Tourist is a fun romance/adventure that has a pretty impressive cast. Hell, even the mysterious English guy following Elise around is played by Rufus Sewell and the Italian man chatting up Elise at the ball is the famous Italian actor Raoul Bova.

Now, I was expecting the movie to have a similar pace and action/romance/comedy ratio with Knight and Day starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz. It doesn’t. It starts like a spy movie, but quickly turns into a romance film. You might feel the movie drags for 10 minutes or so, when Johnny Depp is acting like a bewildered love sick puppy, but worry not. The movie picks up pace, the funny situations become more apparent and fun boat & roof chases follow…

But let’s not call it a drama/thriller like IMDB did. It is a romantic adventure. And it is a little slower than Knight and Day.

But all in all, it is a fun movie. It combines the genres that I like, presents them at the adorable Venice setting and well, an adorable cast. Sure, it could have been faster, sexier and/or funnier. And it might not have interested me that much without such a cast. But it is what it is.

7/10 from me.,

Due Date, Love and Other Drugs, The Tourist: The 3 Comedies to Anticipate This Season

For the summer, my top 3 anticipated movies were Knight and Day, Inception and Salt. While I didn’t get to see Salt (I will, eventually), I had a great time with both Knight and Day and Inception. While Knight and Day – starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz– gave us the perfect combination of action-comedy-romance, Inception was one hell of a mind-bending ride with a killer script and equally impressive special effects.

For the colder days ahead, there are many good movies coming up, and I picked the three that looked the most fun and well, they also have terrific casts.

The Tourist – starring Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie

The Tourist starring Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie

The Tourist seems like to be in the same genre as Knight and Day, and it has even got one innocent, clueless character that thinking they met this gorgeous and exciting person from the opposite sex but instead of a mind-blowing romance- or at least they can get to that, they find out that sexy stranger is involved in a very complex career. In Knight and Day it was Cameron Diaz, a car mechanic on her way to her sister’s wedding when she met F.B.I agent on the run from the F.B.I agents trying to kill him, played by Tom Cruise. Here the hapless sap is Johnny Depp, and the agent/spy/whatever is the woman, very appropriately played by Angelina Jolie.

The movie seems to have a good sense of humor, great action sequences and exotic locations. Can’t wait.

Love and Other Drugs starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway

Pharmaceutical Rep. Jamie (Jake Gyllenhaal) is pretty happy with his life: he likes his job (=he makes good money), and he is even better with (seducing) women. However his successful yet fun & simple life  gets complicated when he finally meets a girl named Maggie (Anne Hathaway) who pretty much seems to be his female version: she is hot and she loves having sex for the hell of it. But there seems to be more to their attraction and eventually relationship to more than just sex. He really might be falling for her. But maybe there is a reason behind her carefree and fun-loving attitude, and it may be that will alter his life forever…

Don’t worry, I didn’t include anything in the plot that wasn’t suggested in the trailer. This ones seems to be a romantc comedy/drama.

This is Anne and Jake’s second collaboration, the first one being in the award-winning Brokeback Mountain, where Jake played a cowboy falling in love with another gay cowboy, at a time when gay relationships weren’t all that conventional and the two lovers end up marrying women, all the while staying in the affair through a long period of time. Jake’s character had married Anne’s character in the film.

Due Date starring Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis

And from the makers of the The Hangover, comes another comedy. While the trailer of Due Date didn’t make me laugh too hard, it entertained the hell out of me. And since I know the writer is a whiz at writing comedy and that both Zach Galifianakis (The Hangover’s Alan, Bored to Death’s Ray) and Robert Downey Jr. are more than apt at delivering perfect comedic performance, I believe it is safe to think that we might have stomach cramps from laughing because of this movie.

The plot: Peter Highman (Robert Downey Jr.) needs to get to his wife’s birth and unfortunately needs to let the weird passenger Ethan (Zach Galifianakis) join his ride. Of course there will hardly anything going normal…
