I have kissed guys. I just never felt that thing.

Never Been Kissed with Drew Barrymore, David Arquette and Michael Vartan

Please get your minds out of the gutter, after all English is a pretty flexible language. : ) But, this is a PG-13 romantic comedy and there are not any explicit scenes. It might even be considered unrealistic in many aspects. After all people totally buy that Drew Barrymore and David Arquette are high schoolers, and sometimes romantic movies feel less realistic than an extra futuristic fantasy /sci-fi movies. But it is all in the name of some good fun and unless you are feeling cynical (or you despise the genre as a rule), this movie is good to watch.

That thing…that moment when everything around you becomes hazy and the only thing in focus is you and this person

The lead character is Josie (Drew Barrymore)- a totally unhip, unattractive and anti-social female working as a journalist. She is also a die hard romantic who feels like she has never had the perfect kiss. Yeah, girls in general tend to enjoy kissing more if there are some intense feelings going on. One day she gets to do a feature undercover story about today’s highs schoolers. But there’s a problem. As her brother Rob reminds her, she used to be an unpopular, fat kid everyone made fun of. She was of course in love with the most popular guy and as you can imagine, she didn’t get him. Now she has to put herself put there, make friends, get popular and find some juicy story to write about. She might be wiser and much lighter this time around, but she’s still clueless when it comes to social activities and popularity. She just gets along better with the nerds than the popular kids. And to make matters more complicated, her English teacher (played by Michael Vartan) might just be the guy she’s been looking for all her life…

The movie is a romantic comedy but it generates enough laughs before it gets all romantic on you. Drew Barrymore and Michael Vartan make a nice couple but there are some interesting names in the cast with small roles such as James Franco and Jessica Alba. Try to make sure you catch this film from 1999. I revisited it recently and it is still fun.

IMDB rating: 5.7 from 25,370 people.

Someone Like You starring Hugh Jackman and Ashley Judd

Someone Like You starring Hugh Jackman, Ashley Judd and Greg Kinnear

Jane Goodale (Judd) is happy. She’s got a good job as a talk show producer and she’s dating Ray (Greg Kinnear), also from behind the scenes. Their relationship is going just great and they both seem totally invested in it, and Ray really makes Eddie (Jackman) look bad. Eddie is also working behind the scenes and a true womanizer. But then Ray does something Jane doesn’t see coming: he dumps her, right after having made plans for moving in together. Jane is now single, bitter, extremely heart-broken; and to top it all, she is homeless. So now moving in with Eddie seems like her only option.

The disappointmet inspires Jane to write a theory that compares men to male animals and labels dumped women as old cows. So the theory suggests that the male would move on to a new cow after a while. It also seems more fun to pen this theory under the identity of a very old professor, the secret identity only known by her best friend Liz (Marisa Tomei).

Eddie is half- amused and half-pissed about Jane’s weird assumptions. And all though he is “using women as ATM machines” as Jane puts it, maybe Eddie and Jane could make a better match than Jane and Ray ever did…

Someone Like You: A Worthy RomCom

So what if  you knew she would actually fall for all Jackman right after the movie starts? No, I’m not giving any spoilers. It is just so obvious. Kinnear’s character turns out to be a jerk, and he was too good to be true in the first place. And of course we are introduced to Eddie’s past, and learn he used to be in a serious relationship which ended with the girl tearing his heart out.

And seriously, who can consider Eddie (Hugh Jackman)  just a friend/roommate anyway? It just doesn’t happen. So it is a sweet  and kind of quirky (what other romantic comedy you watched had so much cow talk and images ?) and funny. Of course it has clichés but they are fun so who cares? 2 men. 1 girl. 1 guy treats the girl a lot better. There are bound to be similarites to stuff you have been before.

But it does its job. It’s romantic and it is funny. And it is not like either sex will have a hard time figuring out why they are attracted to each other. It’s Ashley Judd and Hugh Jackman we are talking about. But be warned, if you don’t like to see the ending coming, please stay away from Someone Like You. And the 99.99% of romantic comedies. I’m just saying.

That Old Feeling starring Bette Midler, Dennis Farina, Paula Marshall, Danny Nucci and James Denton

THAT OLD FEELING (1997)

Starring: Bette Midler, Dennis Farina, Paula Marshall, James Denton, Gail O’ Grady and Danny Nucci

That Old Feeling starring Bette Midler, Dennis Farina and Paula Marshall
That Old Feeling starring Bette Midler, Dennis Farina and Paula Marshall. Funny. Very funny.

I am not always gonna talk about dramatic pieces. Here’s a great comedy on love, marriage, relationships and old/new sparks.

And if you are thinking I am discriminating, here the guy-Dan (Farina) – also commits adultery and I am perfectly fine with it.

Molly (Marshall) is getting married. The wedding is extra stressful for her. Not because she’s getting cold feet. But her parents Lilly and Dan (Midler and Farina) are divorced and they really despise each other. She has to make sure they don’t kill each other during the couple of hours they see one another.

Dennis Farina, Bette Midler in the middle of another heated argument.

And what she fears happens. They do start fighting- The mother is now married to their marriage counselor and the father is married to a woman she is sure Farina cheated on her with. However Farina claims she cheated on him before. This was all expected. What wasn’t though is when they are alone, the attraction comes rushing back and they have sex. More than that, they run off together. Paula’s fiancé (James Denton) is a candidate senator so the last thing this young politician needs is a scandal. So before she can go their honeymoon, she has to console two hectic and borderline crazy second spouses, deal with a paparazzi (Nucci) who is determined  to find the parents…

It is hilarious and romantic- mostly the romance resulting from the chemistry between the paparazzi and Molly- although he could not be more different than her husband, he just is so fun to be around!!!

I laughed my butt off during this film. It might actually be my ultimate favorite romantic comedy.

Adultery can be OK if the people you are married to are no angels and did use the problems in your marriage to seduce you-and helped you commit adultery in the first place. To see who ends up with who and how, just watch it.

P.S:  Molly’s fiancé is played by James Denton. I did not notice how good-looking his guy was until he appeared as a plumber in Desperate Housewives. And even though I am not one of the biggest fans of th show, I have to say I was hooked on James. In this movie, he is too uptight and insensitive and the charm card goes to Nucci.

A little on the actors:

James Denton
James Denton

Talk about rugged good looks…His fans might check this movie out to see a younger James.

As for Farina and Midler…They are as marvelously hilarious as always.

Yep, fighting again.
