Matt Sullivan’s (Josh Hartnett) girlfriend Nicole (Vinessa Shaw) has left him 6 months ago but he is still not over her. Sure, he is having sex with the attractive women he meets but as he comes to realize, sex has stopped being fun for him. He doesn’t really feel anything, despite being on the verge of having panic attacks during it.

One day, through an encounter with a priest, he gets a “bright” idea: He will not have sex for 40 days. Not only that, but he will stay away from any sex-related activity (doing it himself included), foreplay, kisses, holding hands, touching….He will use these 40 days to fully cleanse himself.

But almost as soon as he starts, he meets a beautiful, laid-back and fun girl named Erica (Shannyn Sossamon- A Knight’s Tale, Moonlight). He can’t stay away from her so he at least tries his hand at being friends. But of course by this time, his friends have set up a webpage about his “mission” and ridiculous amounts of bets are being placed on when he just might explode.

Erica is furious at finding out but given that she is really into Matt, she tries the friends thing too. The problem is –since there is money at stake for others- they just might go out of their way to seduce Matt. So can Matt succeed his mission, say no to temptation and manage not to screw things up with Erica all at once? After all, there is only so much one man is capable of…

40 Days and 40 Nights is a romantic comedy that is as unisex as it goes. If anything, guys might enjoy it even more. Sure, everything concerning Erica is sensual and well romantic but as a girl, you can’t really care about Matt’s problem. It is not a reason not to have a couple of laughs, pitying Matt. It might also very well be the only movie where the guy fakes an orgasm so that he can get it over with. This does get originality points.

Favorite Scene: The very final scene. No, not because the movie is finally over. Because it is ridiculous but also funny. Co-starring is Paul Costanzo as Matt’s best friend, who you might remember from the Friends’ spinoff Joey. He played Joey Tribianni’s nephew.

This is not the funniest romcom out there. Or the most romantic. Its 5.4 IMDB rating seems about fair, as it is only just a bit of fun.  But since not many romcoms are focusing on “real male issues”, it might be a good date film. Although guys may not really feel sorry for Matt at all either…5/10 from me. Still, I will take this one over the extremely predictable, clichéd and boring Pearl Harbor anyday (which is another Josh Hartnett movie, also rated at 5.4).

The Bachelor starring Chris O’Donnell and Renée Zellweger

The Bachelor starring Chris O' Donnell Renée Zellweger
The Bachelor starring Chris O' Donnell Renée Zellweger. Made in 1999. Brace yourselves for something very romantic and very funny. Image from filmamerica.com

The opening credits start in wide open land with lots of horses running wild. Our narrator/lead character

Jimmy Shannon (Chris O’Donnell) starts his story by telling us that every man (in America) is Mustang (the horse, not the car) at heart. He is too. He is also a happy bachelor who loves dating a variety of women without having to think about getting married. One day he meets Anne (Renée Zellweger) and even though he is still not even dreaming about marriage, he is happy just being with that one women.  After a year of bliss, his luck starts to change. All his friends have been getting married inevitably Anne uses the ever-dreaded word “future”. He is the only single guy left in his circle. He decides to do the inevitable and screws up big time. But then something even more dreadful  happens- his grandfather dies and leaves him a $100 million. What’s dreadful about it? Jimmy needs to be married in a certain time frame, be married for at least 10 years and have 10 children. What the ****? “Poor” Jimmy proposes to Anne again, screwing up more time. Anne leaves town to visit her folks and Jimmy has no choice but visiting all his exes one by one, a highly diverse list of women who include a feminist, an over-bearing one, a cop, one who is all business, a stockbroker,  an opera singer…

So Jimmy spends a lot of time proposing to one wrong woman after another and failing to be engaged, until his friend comes with a “brilliant” idea that’s very entertaining for us the audience and a total nightmare for Jimmy….

The Bachelor is a typical romantic comedy but I am saying it with love and affection. I really do like this movie. I love the idea, the actors, the scenes and the dialogue. Sure, as a modern woman I resent the idea of all men being portrayed as commitment-phobic and women crazy about marriage.  I resent the idea that all women see marriage as bliss but men as a nightmare. It might be true for a lot of cases but hey times are changing a little. But who cares? The casting is perfect. If any other guy was giving you all the talk about Mustangs, a girl might be pissed. But hey, it is Chris O’ Donnell. One of the cutest and prettiest actors to date, he lights up the screen and even in his desperate moments, he doesn’t annoy you. He makes you laugh. Put an average guy in there and you would say “Oh, screw you, who would want to marry you, anyway?”. This is a romantic comedy meaning it is (unfortunately) targeted mostly at women and I am being honest.

Brooke Shields and Mariah Carey make very fun appearances. Even though I don’t like Mariah Carey at all, she was the perfect choice as the over-the-top opera singer.

It is a fun romcom with all the regular amount of cheesiness. But the funny bits are really funny and the romantic part is romantic. So if you like the genre, suspend your cynicism for the duration of the film and have fun.

Something New starring Simon Baker

When successful corporate lawyer Kenya ( Sanaa Lathan) is set up on a blind date, she is less than pleased to see that her date is Brian Kelly (Simon Baker). Not that Brian isn’t good-looking. He is. The problem? He is white. So Kenya doesn’t even give him a chance. But after a chance encounter and a situation she can’t get out of, she decides to hire Brian as a landscape architect for her garden. Even though she thinks they don’t have much in common, their personalities and taste seem to be opposite and she can’t look past the racial issues, she finds herself falling for Brian. Once she lets go, they start having a great relationship. But there will always be doubts (mostly racial) and prejudices on her part.  This eventually drives them art. But then she meets Mark (Blair Underwood)-an ambitious black man also working in the corporate world. Obviously he is not without issues. But most importantly, he is not Brian…

The movie is a sweet little romance. I know it is labeled as a romcom but I don’t think it has many funny moments. It is as romantic as its supposed to be with all the right amount of complications and obstacles. It is fun and completely harmless but nothing to tell the home about really. 6.6 on IMDB. 6/10 from me. Well, obviously if you want me to rate according to the screen time and the beauty level of Simon Baker, than it is a 10/10. If you do like Baker, yeah- you should watch it. I enjoyed it. Plus, it was a fun change to see Simon in casual wear after watching him in suits all the time in The Mentalist.

Favorite Lines – Obviously, they came from Brian.

Kenya: I don’t do dogs.

Brian: Neither do I. We’re just friends.

***

Brian: I take it you don’t do white guys.

Kenya: I just happen to prefer black men. It’s not a prejudice, it’s a preference.

Brian: Sure, it’s your preference to be prejudiced.

***

Brian: I love you.

Kenya: I don’t know what to say.

Brian: Should I give you a hint?

***

10 Things I Hate About You starring Heath Ledger, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Julia Stiles & Larisa Oleynik

10 things I hate about you, starring Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles
10 things I hate about you, starring Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles. Yep, they look soooo into each other.

This probably has to the best, teen movie ever- because it is just not exactly a teen movie. Sure it takes place in a high school and between high school students, but it is based on Shakespeare comedy “Taming of The Shrew” –which I fully intend to read.

Let’s talk about the movie.

When Cameron (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) starts at his new school, he immediately develops a friendship with one of the outcasts named Michael (David Krumholtz)and falls for Bianca Stratford (Larisa Oleynik) at first sight. Michael immediately warns Cameron that Bianca is way out of his league and he is not exaggerating. She is more into Joey (Andrew Keegan), a self-centered popular guy who gets modeling gigs. Joey is only into Bianca because she is a virgin. What really challenges him though is that Bianca’s father (Larry Miller) is not letting her date.

As Cameron tries to get closer to Bianca while he tutors her French (a language he is trying to master only to be able to spend time with her), Bianca informs him that his father has made a new rule: she can date when her older sister Kat (Julia Stiles) dates. The problem is her sister (also at her high school) is against every thing Bianca ever believes in. She loves punk and rock, she is anti-fashion, is all for individuality and she’d rather die than date an idiot at her school.

This is when Cameron and his friend come up with a great plan. Michael makes a deal with Joey- they’ll find a guy to date Kat- Joey will pay the guy. Then he will be able to date Bianca. Of course the real plan is for Cameron to be able to B himself. Then they make a deal with Patrick (Heath Ledger) whose reputation is bad as Kat’s. Cameron and Michael help Patrick to get to Kat. Of course things get complicated as Bianca only seems to be using Cam and Patrick starts falling for Kat….

It is really funny and romantic. Heath Ledger is awesome as usual and the casting just seems right. I love how Michael uses this opportunity to get back at his old best friends who excluded him and Kat’s father (Larry Miller) is just a riot. He cracks me up every time. Then there is the headmaster who is writing an erotic novel and the English teacher who seems to hate all of his students. And any soundtrack that involves Joan Jett is fine by me. Do watch it. After all how many other “teen” movies did you see that was rated 6.9 on imdb, voted by 56.799 people? Exactly!!!

Enjoy the trailer
