After Civil War. When Jack Sommersby (Richard Gere) returns home after 6 years, town folks are happy to have him back safe and sound. So they try not to mind some mildly odd behavior- it looks like he is a kinder man. He is more respectful to the black folk, for instance. But the most surprised person is his wife (Jodie Foster). The man who she remembers as a bastard, has come back as a kind,loving man. A good husband, a good father. War changes people,right? Or is this guy really Jack? The only man who is not happy with happy with Jack’s return is Orin (Bill Pullman). Had he not returned, he would have got to marry Jack’s wife…

The story is romantic, emotional and quite captivating. You also keep wondering if people can change this much. And if it isn’t Jack, how come his wife doesn’t realize it? Or does she?

How many secrets do you have? Some, right? It is not like I have an exciting double life or a secret identity. Neither does the 20 something- Brit Emma.

But she keeps a lot of little things- from everyone. And there are things that would/could humiliate her at work, in the eyes of her parents, best-friend, boyfriend…She is also hoping for a better job, a better love life…You get the idea.

One day, she is on a plane, sitting next to a stranger. And the plane goes through awful turbulence. Everyone on the plane seems to be afraid for their lives. So Emma says what the hell and spills everything out to the mysterious American stranger.

The plane doesn’t crash though. But she can’t remain too happy she survived: turns out the stranger is actually one of the bosses of the company she’s working for- a man they have heard of yet not met before. And he knows every intimate little detail about her. Worse, he remembers everything…The interactions are funny and with the growing sexual chemistry, things begin to get a lot more complicated…

This book is the first book I read by Kinsella and I definitely became addicted to her writing style.

The story is fun, witty and the circumstances are very hilarious. Emma’s boss- Jack Harper is the kind of older guy( Harper is probably is in his 40s) women fantasize about. Ruggedly handsome, effortlessly sexy, exciting and oh, as a bonus-he is rich.

Jones (Richard Gere) is hyper and fun. His lust for life is extreme. It is like he has the energy of ten men restored in him. His energy and happiness are contagious. Oh, sure it can be irritating as hell, depending on how your own day is going. He loves to laugh, flirt and spend. He loves to dance and he can play music so incredibly well.

But this is a good day. It is the manic side of his manic depression,also called the bipolar disorder. He hates being hospitalized and he hates medicine. What he likes, though, is the pretty doctor treating him: Elizabeth (Lena Olin). She wants to treat him. He is more intrested in flirting. After he dodges hospitalization,however, his doctor’s fears/or let’s say the realistic expectations are realized. The depression takes over.

The depressed side is maybe even worse than a regularly depressed patient, because you fall down so hard and so fast- and you really don’t know what has hit you. You hate yoursef,your life, and life in general. You transfer from being your best friend and your fav. person on earth to your biggest enemy and someone you don’t really recognize. So this time Jones is too desperate to turn down treatment. However a psychiatric hospital makes Jones even more depressed. The thing with manic-depression is that you are aware of the ridiculousness and the extremity of the situation. You are sane. So while his mood swings are balanced with medication, his personality is sedated too. He is miserable there.

So what do you do with a patient who is- on a good day- better and more rational than you and on a bad day questions everything, feels isolated and lost? After Elizabeth’s intrusion in his previous life (partly from curiousity and partly for his treatment and, welll partly she has feelings for him) – they have a huge fight, Jones gets angry and leaves. Liz doesn’t let him go and well, things gets even more complicated for both…

Both characters are problematic and romantic. Both leads are beautiful. The movie brought me really up and put me down at the same time. It still haunts me. Because people, you can dismiss the actions of Liz, and the relationship as romantisized but Jones is very true to heart. No, this is not my Richard gere crush talking. I know a manic- depressive very well…

P.S: Give Mad Love a chance too. Depending on whether you are a little crazy/impulsive by nature and/or manic-depressive you might identify with Drew Barrymore’s character. If not, the sensitive Matt (Chris O’ Donnell) might appeal to you.

Twilight Mania: Robert Pattinson, Pretty Vampires and the First Twilight Movie

Even the grown-ups (females) lust after Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) . In this year’s MTV Movie Awards, Jim Carrey typically won the best comedic performance and added a little joke for Pattinson in his speech. He mentioned Robert as “the good-looking kid from Twilight”.

Whether you have read the book or not (and sometimes especially if you haven’t heard the book), you fall for the story, and you fall for Cullen. And it is just too easy to identify with Bella. It doesn’t matter how old you are, or where you are from. She is plain and definitely not strikingly pretty. So the fact that the most gorgeous guy in school notices her and falls for her, is a fantasy most women ponder. Then add the mutual & etarnal love to the equation, and voila…we are hooked.

TwilightKissingSceneSoromantic — Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart

Edward Cullen is the perfect creature ( he is a vampire so I guess the word creature is appropriate). He is bloody sexy, deeply romantic and loyal to the end. He has amazing stamina and strength (again, perks of being a vamp) and he can hear anyone’s thoughts, apart from his love interest’s. Oh, let’s not forget the fact that he can play the piano, dance and literally & metaphorically knock you off your feet. So most men are bound to hate him and the movie. They say that there isn’t enough action in the movie (sure there isn’ t, it is basically a love story) and that the characters aren’t realistic (people- it is set in a world with vampires, so why are we questioning impossibly pure loves? Or the fact that Edward looks at Bella like she is dinner? She is! He even mentions it himself, remember?). And again, why would you go see Twilight if you don’t want a love story? Have you seen the trailer? Or the poster, for that matter?

twilight-2 — Seriously, who really looked at the poster and thought this was an action movie?

Let’s not discuss how a character or love like this wouldn’t exist in the real world. He is a vampire. If you can buy that, you can buy the rest. Maybe the effects weren’t good enough. I don’t really care. I have seen much worse in movies with much larger budgets-and those were ACTION movies.

The acting? Some find it mediocre. Some find it just right. The music is perfect, the author Stephenie Meyer approves of it (she even appears very shortly in a scene).

My mom-mid 50s- adored it and she hates vampires. The 16 year-old-sister of a good friend loved it and so did I. Give it a shot. Just don’t watch it with a male if you can help it…

And if you have read the book, there will be the issue of how it is not nearly as good. People, there are not many readers out there who have been satisfied with the movie adaptation of anything. Yet when you haven’t read it beforehand and liked the flick, then you just wish people would stop bitching about the differences and talk on about how much you enjoyed the whole experience.
