500 Days of Summer starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel

500 Days of Summer, Joseph Gordon-Levitt
500 Days of Summer, Joseph Gordon-Levitt

This is one real, sincere and a little gem of a movie. It is quite lovely, actually bordering on brilliant. I have seen better movies and I’m sure you have too. I am just not sure I have seen any better in the whole romance/comedy genre though. I think most people have been in the places of both of the leading characters- Tom and Summer.

[pro-player width=’530′ height=’253′ type=’video’]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsD0NpFSADM[/pro-player]
Tom (Joseph Gordon- Levitt) is a young man working at a greeting cards company. When Summer (Zooey Deschanel) starts to work at the same office, he can’t believe his luck. She is beautiful, fun and seems to share his taste in music. There is one problem: Summer is a cynic who doesn’t believe in love and doesn’t want a serious relationship. So Tom only has one choice really. As much as he’s falling for Summer, he pretends he is OK with the casual relationship they are having. The movie adds a half-serious/half-amusing documentary approach to the background as the story takes a look at Tom’s 500 days spent either with Summer or thinking about her. The days are not shown in order and we just join the emotional rollercoaster Tom has got on.

The movie provides all the bittersweet reality of falling in love, the great days when we think the other person feels the same and the other days when we simply feel all alone in the relationship. This is of course Tom’s point of view. I once fell for a boy who didn’t love me back yet I was certain we were such a good match. As Tom’s terribly smart and mature younger sister points out, just because the other person likes the same stuff with us, it doesn’t mean they are your soul mates. Attraction and love may not be mutual or even if there is chemistry, it doesn’t mean the other person fells the same way about you. But then again, I understand Summer too. I have been Summer, meaning where I was the one who didn’t want a relationship, where I wanted to keep things casual. That is what makes this movie so good to watch. The characters are us. We have been them or met them at some point in our lives. But the story is never slow or boring because the familiarity is always presented with a lovely sense of humor.

But as the tag line says, this is not a love story. It is a story about love. And as far as emotional and funny movies go, this is pretty well-done.

The soundtrack is lovely. The actors are totally believable and very likable. And do not consider as just a love a story. It is a great look on life, relationships and dreams. It takes a girl like Summer for Tom to start thinking about his goals again. All people that enter our lives leave some sort of mark, whether they stay on or not. This film is the perfect combination of escapism and reality.

The Problem with Stereotypes: Hybrids are screwed…

Posted on November 28, 2009 Written by ripitup

The problem with stereotypes actually occurs when you can’t be categorized into one. Sure, people love to think they are above categorizing and judging but most secretly love doing it because it makes their lives easier. Let’s go over some basics:

Nerd: The person who studies all the time with no or little social life is the nerd, we don’t expect that person to look very attractive or to get laid a lot.

Slut: The slutty girl or the manwhore– the one who sleeps around, looks good, loves to work on the looks, is usually shallow and focuses on sex. Easy to spot.

The girlie girl: The girl who loves shopping, spas, girls’ days out, loves fashion and Brad Pitt/Leonardo Di Caprio.

Tomcat: A girl with boyish tastes. Easily befriends men but flirting doesn’t come that easily.

The fashion victim: Male or female who just has to buy anything fashionable and has to get rid of anything that is not. They will wear what fashions dictates no matter how ridiculous they might be. Money is not an issue. Deep conversations might be difficult to sustain though.

The hottie: Confident, self-aware and a little arrogant. Knows how good he/she looks.

……….

……….

……….

You know what I’m talking about. Life is actually easier when you can fit into these groups. They also don’t have that much trouble with the opposite sex. The nerds either hook up with nerds or they just wait to get rich and then they get to hook up with pretty much whomever they want.

But I don’t belong to one category and neither does a good friend of mine. So we are basically screwed. Seriously. Let me show you the examples:

* My friend is a girl. She loves shopping. And she lovessss the Twilight series and fancies Robert Pattinson. Girlie? Yes. But she adores Starwars. She loves sci-fi. She sure likes her beer. Tomcat? Boys’ girl? Sure. But then again she likes her skirts and make-up. So how does a guy handle a girl who loves shopping and Sophie Kinsella and yet loves sci-fi? Then there is the nerd category: She is not a nerd but she is training to be a lawyer so she has to work her ass off. That does damage the social life. She enjoys looking sexy and flirting but she is most definitely not slutty. She would rather make conversation than bedroom eyes. So what happens to her romantically is that she most often ends up attracting the guys she is trying not to attract. The hottie she is dying to get ends up being her mate and the nerd ends up falling for her. The hopelessly romantic yet cute guy loves her to bits but he has already met the girl of his dreams before. What the ….?

*I am not any luckier. I love shopping, Twilight, Sophie Kinsella. But I adore John Grisham and like Dan Brown. I am a sucker for romantic comedies but any good comic book adaptation washes well over me. I don’t like Brad Pitt, I find Jim Carrey handsome and Mel Gibson‘s youth gorgeous. Weird? Read on. I hate housework. I hate dirt but I hate tidying up. I love my mini skirts. I detest cooking and hate fashion. I hate watching sports but I love playing them. I can’t stand any football related computer game but bring on the Guitar Hero! Did I mention I love Sex and the City and have a wardrobe that can easily transform me into Carrie or Samantha? Oh, and I love my black rock t-shirts too. The result? My romantic life sucks. Not because I am unattractive or I don’t know what I want. But every guy around me belongs to a stereotype and he is looking for a stereotype in his own category. Hybrids like us need hybrids. Until we do find them, we are just going to have to live in the dream world. After all, that is where we find the hot guy who is not arrogant, who is romantic but not a dork, who is sweet and considerate and not possessive, who knows what he wants, who can be friends with women but not want to sleep with them all, has other favorite actresses other than Megan Fox, who can enjoy sports other than football/basketball/wrestling/boxing, who doesn’t think that men who can dance are all gay….

See? I told you we were screwed…

Never Been Kissed starring Drew Barrymore, Michael Vartan and David Arquette

I have kissed guys. I just never felt that thing.

Never Been Kissed with Drew Barrymore, David Arquette and Michael Vartan
Never Been Kissed with Drew Barrymore, David Arquette and Michael Vartan

Please get your minds out of the gutter, after all English is a pretty flexible language. : ) But, this is a PG-13 romantic comedy and there are not any explicit scenes. It might even be considered unrealistic in many aspects. After all people totally buy that Drew Barrymore and David Arquette are high schoolers, and sometimes romantic movies feel less realistic than an extra futuristic fantasy /sci-fi movies. But it is all in the name of some good fun and unless you are feeling cynical (or you despise the genre as a rule), this movie is good to watch.

That thing…that moment when everything around you becomes hazy and the only thing in focus is you and this person

The lead character is Josie (Drew Barrymore)- a totally unhip, unattractive and anti-social female working as a journalist. She is also a die hard romantic who feels like she has never had the perfect kiss. Yeah, girls in general tend to enjoy kissing more if there are some intense feelings going on. One day she gets to do a feature undercover story about today’s highs schoolers. But there’s a problem. As her brother Rob reminds her, she used to be an unpopular, fat kid everyone made fun of. She was of course in love with the most popular guy and as you can imagine, she didn’t get him. Now she has to put herself put there, make friends, get popular and find some juicy story to write about. She might be wiser and much lighter this time around, but she’s still clueless when it comes to social activities and popularity. She just gets along better with the nerds than the popular kids. And to make matters more complicated, her English teacher (played by Michael Vartan) might just be the guy she’s been looking for all her life…

The movie is a romantic comedy but it generates enough laughs before it gets all romantic on you. Drew Barrymore and Michael Vartan make a nice couple but there are some interesting names in the cast with small roles such as James Franco and Jessica Alba. Try to make sure you catch this film from 1999. I revisited it recently and it is still fun.

IMDB rating: 5.7 from 25,370 people.

Return to Paradise starring Vince Vaughn, Anne Heche and Joaquin Phoenix

Return to Paradise, starring Vince Vaughn, Anne Heche and Joaquin Phoenix
Return to Paradise, starring Vince Vaughn, Anne Heche and Joaquin Phoenix

Sheriff (Vince Vaughn), Lewis (Joaquin Phoenix) and Tony (David Conrad) are three  pals who take a vacation in Malaysia. Enjoying the scene and getting a little high don’t seem like a bad idea. Tony and Sheriff need to get back to New York. They don’t hear from Lewis for a while…

Lewis is in big trouble. Drug possession is a major crime in Malaysia and he has been caught with all their drugs. Now he is facing death sentence, and being kept in prison under the most primitive conditions. Lewis’s lawyer Beth (Anne Heche) comes to New York to track the two friends down, because there is a chance to save Lewis. Since the some of the drugs were theirs, Malaysian court will not hang Lewis if they come back and admit to their crime. They will each get three years and then get their freedom back. If only one of them goes, he will get six years. However they see what an awful shape he is in through the video records. He is bordering on the verge of insanity. Now David and Sheriff have a life-altering dilemma. Should they go back, plead guilty and suffer the same conditions? Lewis seems like a lost cause and do they want to go through the same treatments and conditions? But if they don’t, their friend will be hung- because of a crime they helped commit. Beth has a very short time frame- 8 days- to persuade the two, and David has a fiancée (Vera Farmiga) that seems quite determined to keep David out of prison. Things also get more complicated as Beth and Sheriff seem to feel an attraction and connection towards each other…

It is one of the most haunting and thought-provoking movies I have seen and I find the script quite original and brilliant. The dilemma in itself is perfect. Can you risk losing 3 or 6 years of your life, trusting a government whose willing to hang a man for possessing drugs? And by drugs, we are not talking about heroin, but hashish. How much do they love their friend? But on the other hand, they are at fault as well. And by not giving up their freedom for a certain period of time, they will have caused their friend’s death. So which will it be? The agony of spending time in a jail that is disturbing enough to make their friend into someone they don’t recognize? Or will they live with the guilt for the rest of their lives?

It is an excellent what if question. The question is awfully difficult and the choices are terribly unpleasant. It is easy to say you’d of course go and help your friend, and claim you’d do the right thing, but we don’t really know if we could do it, if/when push happened to come to shove. David suffers from it. Sheriff suffers from it. The existence of dilemma makes the characters to go through a conflict. It will also show them who they really are. Beth’s situation isn’t that easy either, especially after she starts to fall for Sheriff.

The acting is just intense enough. The characters are not over or underplayed. It is one of those movies that glue you to your seat without any action scenes. If any of you have taken a disliking towards Vince Vaughn because of the same type of fast-talking comedic characters he seems to play too often (Old School, Wedding Crashers, Mr. and Mrs. Smith), this movie is going to persuade you that he can act. In fact, this one is the first movie I have ever seen Vince Vaughn and I’ll always be a fan. I wish he could make more movies like this. And it is no secret that Joaquin Phoenix (The Gladiator, Walk the Line, Quills) is a great actor. Even though he is the younger brother of the deceased River Phoenix, I always seem to make the mistake of thinking Joaquin as the older one, since River died at the age of 23. Talented family.

Anyhow, please make time to see this film. It’s modest yet powerful. It’s worth it.
