I saw this really bad review on IMDB. I had already seen the movie and enjoyed it so the review realy caught me off guard. Sure, you don’t have to like the movie but this viewer had given it the lowest score possible, called it thrash and named the characters selfish, self-absorbed, superficial and so on. My first question was: Was this viewer a male? While I have some male friends who liked Sex and The City as TV series, the majority of the show’s audience is female. After all, the show is about 4 girls’ sexapades, friendships and romantic experiences while they hang out at New York’s poshest places and spend a fortune on their clothes. Now, while the show may not be a deep one and can’t relate to all women, it sure as hell appealed to strong, independent career women who were like these 4 or who just wanted to be like them. So I wondered if the viewer had seen this really original and daring show at all.

Talking about a strictly movie perspective, I may not have exactly fallen in love with the movie. 4 characters’ love lives, occasional work trouble and their friendships is not every screenwriter’s dream script. However, I am not just a girl who stumbled on this movie. I am a fan of the show who loved and watched all 6 seasons of the shows and identified at least some characteristics of the characters.

If you are interested in the back story or trivia, you can visit the show’s profile page.  Here I will tell where each character ended up:

*Sex and The City is originally a best-selling book written by Candace Bushnell. The show tells the story of Samantha (Kim Catrall)- a totally promiscuous, sexually adventurous man-eater who is also a successful career women running her PR company. She has no limits or reservations. And while she couldn’t have cared less about family, kids and other traditional expectations, she eventually fell in love with young actor Smith (Jason Lewis).

* Charlotte (Kristin Davis) is every feminist’s and cynic’s nightmare: She dreamed of the big white dress, the fairy-tale wedding and the perfect husband. And while most women could understand her romantic fantasies, even her best friends were amazed as Charlotte left her art career to stay at home and work at a family. They were even more fazed when she changed her religion because the love of her life (Harry- played by Evan Handler) said he couldn’t marry a non-Jew. So she changed it and married Harry. And since they couldn’t have children, they adopted a Chinese baby.

* Successful, and cynical lawyer Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) finally married her on and off boyfriend and the father of her baby/bartender Steve (David Eigenberg). And even if it killed her to leave Manhattan, she moved to Brooklyn so that her kid could grow up in a nice house with a garden instead of a small apartment.

*And the show’s leading character/narrator/writer of her own newspaper column Sex and The City/author of bestselling books/ shoe-addict Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) finally married the love of her live John, a.k.a Big (Chris Noth). After a very turbulent love affair that took many levels and forms, trials of friendships and break-ups, Carrie and Big finally got together for good.

  • Carrie and Big decide to move in together and buy the dream house. They even decide to take it to the next level and get married. Her career is also on the rise as she is working on her third book. It is time to say good-bye to her flat and plan a wedding. As Charlotte “lends” Carrie her friend/wedding planner, Carrie get carried away with all the glamorous ideas. And to Big’s concern, she wants him as involved and excited as she is. However Big is older than Carrie’s 40 years and he has been married twice before. And nothing would make him happier than just to go to the city hall to get married.
  • Samantha has moved in with Smith (Jason Lewis). He has finally got the fame and the career he craved for so Samantha has moved to Los Angeles with him, also working as his PR manager. And while Smith is gorgeous, thoughtful and nice, his primary concern is to make his career successful and permanent. And Samantha is homesick. Big time. She misses New York, her regular hang-outs with her three best-friends and she is missing the good old days when she wasn’t in a relationship. It doesn’t help that Smith is away a lot and her next-door neighbor is a hunk whose sex life sees as much action as Samantha’s used to have.
  • Charlotte is still blissfully happy with her husband, adopted daughter Lily  and beautiful little dogs. In fact she is so happy and her life is so perfect, it’s scaring her.
  • Miranda’s world comes crashing down when Steve admits that he has cheated on Miranda. She doesn’t care that it has happened only once. She doesn’t forgive Steve and taking their kid Brady, she moves back to New York.

Carrie’s life comes chrashing down when Big leaves her alone right before the altar. Even though he tries to make up for it, this disappointment is too much for Carrie. So the story follows as the girls try to balance their lives with trying to get Carrie back to life. Can she handle being without Big? Can Big survive without Carrie? Can Miranda ever forgive Steve? Can Samantha ever get used to living in L.A?

As I said, if you look at the screenplay alone and not the TV show, the story might seem like plain and ordinary that happens to be set in glorious settings. However, for a lot of fans of the show, the movie gives more time with the characters that we never wanted to say goodbye to in the first place. We wanted to see if  a-happily-ever after was possible for Carrie and Big. It was fun watching Samantha as she turned into a ticking bomb, trying to keep her sexual appetite under control. It also took years for Steve to make Miranda to believe in love, them as a couple and in him as an individual. Miranda screwed up many more times than Steve did during the course of the show. For the first time, Steve screwed up big time.  And Charlotte still is as tuned to her friends’ lives and problems as always.

The magic of the show lied in New York, Carrie’s wardrobe, her weekly columns, the adventures of tall/dark/handsome charm of Big, the perfect one-liners and much more. Sure, Carrie spends more money on shoes than any woman should (I mean $500/a pair? Seriously!) and she probably loves Loui Vitton or Manola Blahnik as much she loves Big…Charlotte is way too traditional and family-oriented. And Samantha? As much as girls do tend to talk about their sex lives in detail, I am not sure how many women go as explicit and vulgar as Samantha.

But these characters worked.  The chemistry was good, the jokes were good. The situations were all too familiar among most modern single women, not just New Yorkers. The supporting cast did a marvelous job and the shown was like a really cool fashion statement. I am a week away from seeing the second installment. And I am looking forward to it. Remember,Sex and City has three lead roles: The 4 girls, sex and New York. And we love that combination.

It’s Complicated starring Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin, Steve Martin and John Krasinski

It' s Complicated starring Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin, Steve Martin and John Karasinski
It's Complicated starring Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin, Steve Martin and John Krasinski. Written and directed by Nancy Meyers. Nominated for Best Actress and Best Screenplay Golden Globes. Image from: http://api.ning.com/

Jane Adler (Meryl Streep) is a successful restaurant owner. She lives in a beautiful house, has three grown children (played by Zoe Kazan, Caitlin Fitzgerald, Hunter Parrish) great girl friends and a future son-in-love, Harley (John Karasinski) who is already a part of the family. It has taken 10 years but her life is in total balance and comfort. However when she goes to New York for her son Luke’s (Hunter Parrish)’s college graduation, she ends up running into her ex-husband/ the children’s father Jake (Alec Baldwin).

Their twenty-something-year-old marriage has ended when Jake cheated on her with the younger Agness (Lake Bell) and then married her. His relationship with Agness is complicated to say the least: she has a young son from another man and now she is trying to conceive with the 58-year-old Jake. The New York encounter leads to a fun night, followed by sex. Jane is totally freaked out. Her simple life has turned upside down. However, Jake is having the time of his life. Second-time around with Jane is easy-going and a lot of fun. Plus, Jane gets to take revenge: she is now the other woman, just as Agness once has been. However her conscience isn’t that clear. And as if things aren’t weird enough, she realizes she is also attracted to her architect- Adam (Steve Martin) who is building her dream house. Adam is nice, fun and good-looking. Not the mention, he is also divorced and has no problem dating women his age.

So who do you pick? Do you even want to pick? What happens when the kids find out?

This movie is top-notch entertainment. It is a wonderful romantic comedy. It has many emotional moments and more often than not, they are presented in a realistic but funny way. It is not always laugh-out-loud. You will find yourself smiling more often than laughing but it is not to say some scenes won’t bring (laughter) tears to your eyes. Meryl Streep is very likeable and she is at her most beautiful in her 60s. Steve Martin never really had a problem entertaining the movie-goers and while his character is charming and enjoyable, the real comedy was mostly on Alec Baldwin’s character. His Jake is downright hilarious. From his shameless admissions to his faults and flaws, from his acting like a total baby and jealousy crisis, he makes you laugh. It is funny to remember that Alex used to be considered a heartthrob in the 90s. He was fit, looked good and he was married to Kim Basinger. Remember those days? But I think while his looks deteriorated, his acting just got better. My second favorite is Harley- John Karasinski’s loveable son-in-law. He is really nice and he loves the Adler family. But his life gets really complicated as well when he becomes the first to know about the affair. I hadn’t been impressed by him when I watched him in the disaster of a romcom Licence to Wed (also starring Mandy Moore and Robin Williams). However, as he becomes co-pilot to Streep, Baldwin and Martin, he does shine through in his own way.

This movie was made in 2009, another romcom hit by writer/director Nancy Meyers. This is my fourth Nancy Meyers movie and I am one of her biggest fans. Do you recall The Holiday starring Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, Jack Black and Rufus Swell? Or What Women Want starring Mel Gibson and Helen Hunt? Or Something’s Got to Give starring Diane Keaton, Jack Nicholson and Keanu Reeves? All these movies have a pattern: They have an original, different and good screenplays, a spot-on direction and an impressive cast. They all balance romance with comedy well and leave you wanting more.I am positively biased when it comes to writer/directors as opposed to writers and directors alone.

6.7 on imdb. 7 from me. And if we compare it to romantic comedies alone, it is easily an 8 or 9.

Favorite scenes:

–          Alec Baldwin gets caught naked to Steve Martin’s webcam. It’s in the trailer

–          Jake, Jane and Harley- smoking pot together in the bathroom

*Fun note: Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin must have loved working together as they presented the 2010’s Academy Awards together. Although, their combined performances in the movie are much funnier.

When in Rome starring Kristen Bell and Josh Duhamel

Beth (Kristen Bell) is a young and successful curator in New York. She’s had terrible luck with love, having been dumped by Brady (a cameo by Lee Pace) and all. So she is skeptical when her sister Joan (Alexis Dziena) tells her that she is marrying an Italian guy called Umberto (Luca Calvani), whom she practically just met. But of course in the name of being a supportive sister, she persuades her tough boss (Anjelica Huston) that she will be to and back from the wedding (in Rome) in 48 hours.

But at the wedding, she meets the handsome best man Nick (Josh Duhamel). He is handsome, sweet, funny and just as work-oriented. She thinks she might have some luck after all but after she ends up being disappointed, she gets drunk and does something weird. She picks up 5 coins from the fountain of love. And the moment she does, 5 men- 1 Italian painter and 4 Americans: a magician, a much older businessman, a model in love with himself and Nick are smitten with her. But then again,Nick was already smitten.

So the rest of the story takes us back to New York, where Beth tries to continues to resume her life. But while Nick pursues her like a normal boy with a crush, the other 4 are acting like deranged and love-struck stalkers. Soon Beth finds out that something “supernatural” is at work. The hard thing is, when will she have the time to sort it? She’s too busy with her work, falling in love with Nick and trying to escape from the mad quadruplet…

The “Italian” painter is played by Will Arnett. Jon Heder (played the “righteous” psychic in Just Like Heaven) plays the weird magician, Danny De Vito plays the sausage king and Dax Shepard plays the model. Now, the cast is fine. I mean even Beth’s father is someone you might know: Don Johnson. Lee Pace makes a cameo…The premise is OK. It’s just that the story and the situations and most interactions are too silly for their own good. When the men are under the spell, they act like a combination of Jeff from The Coupling (Coupling UK) and Jim Carrey’s Cable- that nutty, that challenged yet not funny. Yes, Jeff was hilarious in Coupling. But here are we have 4 worse-than-Jeff suitors and one really clumsy hunk.

The movie is not bad. It is just not really good either. It is completely harmless. It will generate some laughs and will entertain most of the time. But something is missing. Sometimes it makes you laugh and sometimes it just makes you cringe. But I am not saying you should absolutely stay away from it. It is very light. I like Kristen Bell . By now, I think people mostly heard of Josh Duhamel. He starred in the tv show Las Vegas, appeared in The Transformers movies and got married to Fergie. I don’t think any movie will hurt his celebrity status now…

5.1 on IMDB. I do have to agree. I expected something better. I wish Lee Pace appeared more than just for a couple of minutes. Seriously. Someone really should find another agent for this guy. So,  see to watch a great wedding place, Rome and New York all in one. My favorite part of the movie is the dancing sequence at the end credits.

Penelope starring Christina Ricci and James McAvoy

Welcome to a sweet, quirky and fun fairy tale:

One of Penelope’s dad’s ancestors has slept with a maid and then left the girl. This ends up in the girl’s suicide. Her mother happens to be witch and puts a spell upon the family. According to the curse, the first daughter born into the family is going to be awfully ugly: a girl with a pig’s nose and ears. The spell somehow ends up affecting poor Penelope. In order for the spell/curse to be lifted, a guy from a certain bloodline should fall in love with her, even after he has seen her face.

Penelope (Christina Ricci) can’t go outside for years, according to her mom’s wishes. The press has believed her to be dead. She has gotten sick of it all, especially of men who gets the shock of their lives after they have see her. One day, things get out of Penelope’s mom’s (Catherine O’ Hara) control: A discredited heir (Simon Woods) decides to prove to the whole world what Penelope really looks like. With the help of a journalist in need of revenge, he hires a gambler (James McAvoy) to help them expose the secret. However the gambler gets to know Penelope without seeing her face first and he really likes her. But when he does see her and Penelope makes an unexpected offer, he runs away. Penelope misreads his reaction, and having had enough rebels and just ventures out into the real world. This new adventure will help make new friends (one played by Reese Witherspoon), and figure out who she really is.

Penelope is a lovely and interesting mixture of reality and fairy tale. After all we have rich vs poor, gambling, prejudice,”importance” of looks, superficiality, true love, friendship and coming to terms with who you are and how you look. So watching Christina with her special “make-up” may not be everyone’s cup of tea. But if you can get past how she looks, you are in for a real treat. A wonderful comedy-romance with supernatural elements.

Voted 7.1 on IMDB by over 15.000 people. I agree with the rating.

P.S. If you have seen Simon Woods as Mr. Bingley in Pride and Prejudice, you will have a real riot comparing his two opposite roles.

Also on Christina Ricci:

Cursed starring Christina Ricci, Joshua Jackson & Jesse Eisenberg
