The Bachelor starring Chris O' Donnell Renée Zellweger
The Bachelor starring Chris O' Donnell Renée Zellweger. Made in 1999. Brace yourselves for something very romantic and very funny. Image from filmamerica.com

The opening credits start in wide open land with lots of horses running wild. Our narrator/lead character

Jimmy Shannon (Chris O’Donnell) starts his story by telling us that every man (in America) is Mustang (the horse, not the car) at heart. He is too. He is also a happy bachelor who loves dating a variety of women without having to think about getting married. One day he meets Anne (Renée Zellweger) and even though he is still not even dreaming about marriage, he is happy just being with that one women.  After a year of bliss, his luck starts to change. All his friends have been getting married inevitably Anne uses the ever-dreaded word “future”. He is the only single guy left in his circle. He decides to do the inevitable and screws up big time. But then something even more dreadful  happens- his grandfather dies and leaves him a $100 million. What’s dreadful about it? Jimmy needs to be married in a certain time frame, be married for at least 10 years and have 10 children. What the ****? “Poor” Jimmy proposes to Anne again, screwing up more time. Anne leaves town to visit her folks and Jimmy has no choice but visiting all his exes one by one, a highly diverse list of women who include a feminist, an over-bearing one, a cop, one who is all business, a stockbroker,  an opera singer…

So Jimmy spends a lot of time proposing to one wrong woman after another and failing to be engaged, until his friend comes with a “brilliant” idea that’s very entertaining for us the audience and a total nightmare for Jimmy….

The Bachelor is a typical romantic comedy but I am saying it with love and affection. I really do like this movie. I love the idea, the actors, the scenes and the dialogue. Sure, as a modern woman I resent the idea of all men being portrayed as commitment-phobic and women crazy about marriage.  I resent the idea that all women see marriage as bliss but men as a nightmare. It might be true for a lot of cases but hey times are changing a little. But who cares? The casting is perfect. If any other guy was giving you all the talk about Mustangs, a girl might be pissed. But hey, it is Chris O’ Donnell. One of the cutest and prettiest actors to date, he lights up the screen and even in his desperate moments, he doesn’t annoy you. He makes you laugh. Put an average guy in there and you would say “Oh, screw you, who would want to marry you, anyway?”. This is a romantic comedy meaning it is (unfortunately) targeted mostly at women and I am being honest.

Brooke Shields and Mariah Carey make very fun appearances. Even though I don’t like Mariah Carey at all, she was the perfect choice as the over-the-top opera singer.

It is a fun romcom with all the regular amount of cheesiness. But the funny bits are really funny and the romantic part is romantic. So if you like the genre, suspend your cynicism for the duration of the film and have fun.

When successful corporate lawyer Kenya ( Sanaa Lathan) is set up on a blind date, she is less than pleased to see that her date is Brian Kelly (Simon Baker). Not that Brian isn’t good-looking. He is. The problem? He is white. So Kenya doesn’t even give him a chance. But after a chance encounter and a situation she can’t get out of, she decides to hire Brian as a landscape architect for her garden. Even though she thinks they don’t have much in common, their personalities and taste seem to be opposite and she can’t look past the racial issues, she finds herself falling for Brian. Once she lets go, they start having a great relationship. But there will always be doubts (mostly racial) and prejudices on her part.  This eventually drives them art. But then she meets Mark (Blair Underwood)-an ambitious black man also working in the corporate world. Obviously he is not without issues. But most importantly, he is not Brian…

The movie is a sweet little romance. I know it is labeled as a romcom but I don’t think it has many funny moments. It is as romantic as its supposed to be with all the right amount of complications and obstacles. It is fun and completely harmless but nothing to tell the home about really. 6.6 on IMDB. 6/10 from me. Well, obviously if you want me to rate according to the screen time and the beauty level of Simon Baker, than it is a 10/10. If you do like Baker, yeah- you should watch it. I enjoyed it. Plus, it was a fun change to see Simon in casual wear after watching him in suits all the time in The Mentalist.

Favorite Lines – Obviously, they came from Brian.

Kenya: I don’t do dogs.

Brian: Neither do I. We’re just friends.

***

Brian: I take it you don’t do white guys.

Kenya: I just happen to prefer black men. It’s not a prejudice, it’s a preference.

Brian: Sure, it’s your preference to be prejudiced.

***

Brian: I love you.

Kenya: I don’t know what to say.

Brian: Should I give you a hint?

***

Pride and Prejudice starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen

Pride and Prejudice starring Matthew Macfadyen and Keira Knightley
Pride and Prejudice starring Matthew Macfadyen and Keira Knightley. One of the best romances ever. Photo: blog.lib.umn.edu

Starring: Keira Knightley, Matthew Macfadyen, Donald Sutherland, Rosamund Pike, Brenda Blethyn, Carey Mulligan, Jena Malone, Simon Woods, Rupert Friend, Tom Hollander and Judi Dench

Elizabeth Bennet (Keira Knightley) lives in the early 19th century England with her parents and 4 sisters. She gets along fine with the pretty and serene Jane (Rosamund Pike) and is amused by her 3 other sisters (Jena Malone, Carey Mulligan and Talulah Riley). She adores her father (Donald Sutherland) and tries to tolerate her mother (Brenda Blethyn )- who is very loud, very traditional and is dying to see all her daughters get married fast. Except Lizzy couldn’t have cared less. She loves reading, walking, dancing and having fun. She is not about to give up the idea on true love so that her mother can be happy.

When Mr. Bingley (Simon Woods), his sister and their friend Mr. Darcy (Matthew Macfadyen) visit home, things are about to get a little complicated. Bingley and Jane instantly fall for each other. Elizabeth is not impressed by Darcy at all, who appears to be very full of himself.  And no matter how rich, handsome and knowledgeable Darcy might be, Elizabeth won’t take any crap from anyone. But given Bingley’s love and her mother’s plans, she might have to see a lot more of Darcy than she planned. Then she meets the handsome soldier Wickham (Rupert Friend) who tells her that Darcy caused him great misfortune. But maybe Darcy isn’t that arrogant and proud. Maybe he is just misunderstood. It is not helping matters that he has declared his feelings for her…

Obviously there is a lot to the story than just the relationship between Darcy and Elizabeth but it is the core that gives the story the name and the magic. There are many sub-plots featuring Elizabeth’s sister and the one featuring her best friend but let’s face it. Our number 2 concern is Jane and Bingley. And number 1 is obviously….yeah.

This version of Pride and Prejudice is one of my favorite movies of all time. It is either in top 20 or top 10 and yeah, I watch a lot of movies. It has all the charming and addictive elements of an amazing period romance and it contains hilarious comic relief. The actors are perfectly cast and I wouldn’t replace anyone, had I been (magically) involved in the process. Matthew McFadyen and Keira Knightley were born to play Darcy and Elizabeth.

I love everything about this movie. The costumes, music, parties, location, houses…See it. Hell, it is 7.8 on imdb. How many other “chick flicks” that are rated that high? 10/10 from me.

Darcy is the guy that should give every boy in his right mind a nightmare. Why? You can read it here.

Wuthering Heights starring Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche

Wuthering Heights starring Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche
Juliette Binoche, to me, is one of the most beautiful and graceful actresses ever. And we all know Ralph Fiennes can go from a mental patient to serial killer to obssessed lover to....well, anything. They also star in The English Patient together. Photo from: movietrimmer.com

Imagine watching The English Patient at the theaters the weekend it came out and then watching Wuthering Heights the next day at school. It is bound to make you Ralph Fiennes fan for life.

Although I am a romantic that loves happy endings, I had loved reading Wuthering Heights, written by Emily Bronte. It is perfect for any English class and it just absorbed me. It is haunting, depressing and captivating. Although boys might argue that girls might find this story more fascinating (and they may be right), this is definitely not a chick-flick type of novel. True, there is an obsessive and passionate love story at the very core, but the essence is much more than that. Social perceptions, expectations and norms affect lead character Cathy’s actions. But before Cathy started caring about this stuff, there is the jealousy that caused his brother Hindley’s actions that would also help shape his fate and others’.

Alright, before I get all society-criticizing on you, I should go over the plot. There is a big chance you read the book and/or seen one version of this movie but I’ll remind you anyway.

Catherine Earnshaw’s father one day brings a poor boy at home. He has no one, so he wants his daughter Cathy and his brother Hindley to treat this boy –Heathcliff- like a sibling. Cathy and Heathcliff do indeed become great friends. However Hindley (Jeremy Northam) despises him and he starts treating him like a worthless being as soon as the father dies. This doesn’t stop the inseparable duo from hanging out together. It’d be fair to say they are much more than friends, although they have never exactly acted on it. So Heathcliff  (Ralph Fiennes) doesn’t leave Wuthering Heights no matter how badly he is treated. But one day Cathy (Juliette Binoche) has a little accident and is taken care of by the Lintons, a rich and well-respected family. Cathy becomes friends with the sister and brother (Edgar) Lintons. When she returns home, she seems spoilt and too ladylike for Heathcliff’s liking. She also spends less time with him and seems romantically interested in Edgar. What causes Heathcliff to run away, and change everyone’s lives forever is his hearing Cathy that marrying him would be degrading. When Heathcliff comes back years later, he is wealthy, bitter and ready to take on anyone who caused him to suffer so badly.

This movie/novel does a great job depicting the dark sides of human nature. Ralph Fiennes is superb as the passionate and star-crossed lover. He plays his role to such perfection that even when Heathcliff turns into a mean bastard, causing pain to people who didn’t even hurt him, you understand him. Ralph becomes Heathcliff and makes you feel every bit of his frustration, possession, desperation, loss of innocence and more.

Juliette Binoche is equally brilliant. With any lesser actress, Cathy could have come off as one-dimensional, superficial character. Although I never approved of Cathy’s decision of choosing Edgar over Heathcliff, you can’t help but understanding why.

I love this film, even though I usually hate depressing love stories. But hey, what kind of romantic- even with optimistic tendencies like mine- doesn’t like this film? Did you know that it is one of Johnny Depp’s favorite movies? When asked if he is a romantic, he answers “Well, I saw Wuthering Heights for like 10 times. What do you think?”

See it. Just make sure you are not expecting happiness and light mood. One of the best and most touching period pieces.
