Plot

Sabrina Fairchild (Julia Ormond) is the ugly duckling daughter of the Larrabee family chauffeur (John Wood). She has been in love with the young Larrabee brother – David (Greg Kinnear) all her life. Unfortunately, David is the ultimate player, going from one pretty girl to the next.

She gets her opportunity to change when she moves to Paris and works as a photographer. Upon her return, David is shocked that she has turned into a beautiful young woman and he’s dying to flirt with her.

The older Larrabee brother Linus (Harrison Ford) is the ultimate workaholic, successfully running the family business. He isn’t content with David’s fascination with Sabrina as David is about to marry Elizabeth Tyson (Lauren Holly), with whose family Linus is about to close a profitable merger deal. Knowing that Sabrina still wants David, Linus makes a plan with his mother (Nancy Marchand). He will seduce Sabrina and make her give up on David.

Of course Linus has forgotten about one thing: Sabrina is enchanting and while she is falling for him, he is also falling for her…Will this plan end up well for anyone?

Movie Trivia

Sabrina is the 1995 remake of the 1954 American classic of the same name. 1954’S Sabrina stars Humphrey Bogart, Audrey Hepburn and William Holden. Original Sabrina – directed by Billy Wilder- is rated 7.8 on IMDB while Sydney Pollack’s version is rated at 6.0

A couple of years ago, the movie was adapted to a popular TV series in Turkey and the English translation of the show reads “An Istanbul Fairy Tale”.

Verdict

Sabrina is a sweet, charming movie. Yes, once again I committed the sin of not having seen the original. I am positively biased towards the newer one, since I am a spoiled movie fan that prefers the 90s camera work and technology over the 50s.

It is by no means a perfect movie. While I think Julia Ormond makes a lovely Sabrina, a more good-looking actor could have played David. I love Greg Kinnear to bits, but he just isn’t hot enough for the part of David, though he does seem to make a good replacement for William Holden.

I think Harrison Ford is a perfect Linus, and I’ll go as far to say I prefer him over Bogart. As charismatic as Bogart is, Ford is much more likeable. And the movie does unfortunately becomes a victim to its wardrobe. It might be in character but seriously, didn’t businessmen wear ties in the 90s? What’s with Linus’ fascination with the bowties? Who wore bow ties to a corporation in the 90s? And well, he could have picked a little more flattering glasses. Let me put it this way- Harrison looks as old as he looks now in the film. Which is weird, given that the movie was shot so many years ago.

But apart from my objections to the wardrobe and Greg Kinnear, I liked watching Sabrina. It might be a poor girl falls for the older rich guy storyline, but it comes with Ford and Ormond.

6.5/10 from me. Recommended to every romantic.

Guess Who starring Ashton Kutcher, Bernie Mac, Zoe Saldana & Judith Scott

Percy Jones (Bernie Mac) has a lucrative job at a bank and a busy weekend coming up as his wife Marilyn (Judith Scott) has insisted on a big, 25th-year, vow-renewal party and his photographer daughter Theresa (Zoe Saldana) is coming for the weekend and bringing her boyfriend Simon (Ashton Kutcher).

Percy has checked out Simon’s credit reports and is satisfied to hear that he has a great job at J.P.Oliver. What he doesn’t know however is that Simon’s boss is a jerk, and this has led Simon to quit. Oh, and Theresa has neglected to tell her family that Simon is white.

Percy gets a big shock when the ideal black boyfriend turns out to be white, uninterested in sports and not exactly from a stable family.

It soon turns into a weekend from hell for Simon when Percy uses every method to keep him under his surveillance. And what will happen when Percy finds about his job?

Yes, Guess Who is as predictable and clichéd as a movie with this plot can get. However it is not to say the movie doesn’t have its moments. It’s typical but enjoyable. It’s not for the people who look for something original but for the movie lovers who want something easy to go with their pop corn. And Bernie Mac is great as the nightmare future father-in-law.

Favorite Lines and Scenes

On the way to her parents, Simon asks if she has told her parents about his being “pigment-challenged”. Theresa looks blank so he says “Did you tell them I was white?

Theresa feigns shock. “What? You are white?!!!” (to the cab driver) Stop the car!!!!!

(the driver stops the car and Simon hits his head hard.)

Theresa: Baby, are you okay?

Simon: Who are you?

Simon teaches Percy to Tango.

Simon and Percy play cushion rugby in the living room.

The Beaver is Mel Gibson & Jodie Foster’s latest collaboration. The two met and became good friends while they were shooting Maverick together in 1994. Maverick is a western comedy/adventure starring Foster and Gibson. It was directed by Richard Donner.

The Beaver was written by Kyle Killen & directed by Jodie Foster. Jodie Foster co-stars alongside Gibson. The cast also features the young and talented Anton Yelchin, who performed brilliantly both on Charlie Bartlett and Fierce People.

The Story

Walter Black (Mel Gibson) has become increasingly detached and depressed. His wife Meredith (Jodie Foster) feels like she has no choice but to take their two kids Porter (Anton Yelchin) & Henry (Riley Thomas Stewart) and leave. Walter, however, finds a weird solution. He takes a beaver hand-puppet and starts using it to communicate, both in his personal and professional life. This further infuriates his son Porter but this just might be a working method for the old Walter coming back…

The Verdict

Well, I have to see the movie first. But I will definitely see it. Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster are two of my favorite actors. And I try to give movies about depression a chance because they might end up being very hopeful and/or uplifting, in total contrast to the theme. Because depression is something that can happen to anyone and anytime and well, who better than Mel to portray it since he is not only a great actor but also has gone through depression himself. He was diagnosed with manic-depression and he’s still struggling to keep it under control.

Of course it might end up being a bad movie, but so far it looks promising.

A Beautiful Mind starring Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly, Ed Harris & Paul Bettany

John Nash (Russell Crowe) is a brilliant mathematician who gets into Princeton on a prestigious degree. Obsessively working on a big and original idea for his doctorate thesis, he is often mocked by his peers due to his highly anti-social and odd behavior. His only real friend turns out to be his roommate Charles (Paul Bettany).

After a while, a night out with friends gives him the perfect idea and he gets the credit and success he deserves. Years later, he is working with his Princeton friends, Sol (Adam Goldberg) and Bender (Anthony Rapp) at MIT. There he meets a beautiful student named Alicia (Jennifer Connelly) and they start dating. However, Nash has already accepted a secret government assignment as a code-breaker, recruited by a man named William Parcher (Ed Harris) and his assignments start getting riskier after marrying Alicia. But is John’s paranoia justified?

As Nash is admitted to a mental hospital under the authority of Dr. Rosen (Christopher Plummer), both Nash and Alicia are about to face a shocking revelation…

A Beautiful Mind is based on the life of the mathematician John Nash, and the biographical book of the same name. Directed by Ron Howard in 2001, A Beautiful Mind is one of those rare movies where you agree that it deserved all the Oscars and Oscar nominations it received. And I definitely wish Crowe had won Best Actor. It was one of the most humane, authentic and touching performances I have ever seen on screen.

The movie won 4 Oscars: Best Supporting Actress (Jennifer Connelly), Best Director (Ron Howard), Best Film (Ron Howard & Brian Grazer) and Best Adapted Screenplay ( Akiva Goldsman). The nominations were Best Actor (Russell Crowe), Best Editing, Best Makeup and Best Music (James Horner). I also wish the movie had gotten the best makeup academy award – especially for what they have done with Russell Crowe.

You see, I have never been a Guy Ritchie or Christopher Nolan or Quentin Tarantino fan. Sure there have been Nolan movies that I enjoyed but as I realized once more, I will take a Ron Howard movie any day. Ron has directed Apollo 13, Ransom, Far and Away, The Da Vinci Code, Cinderella and more. Yeah, I guess I am more into old-fashioned story-telling with great actors, lovely music and an interesting story than cult appeal.

Highly recommended.

Fun Note: Co-stars Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly got married in 2003 and they have a child together.
