High Crimes starring Jim Caviezel, Ashley Judd & Morgan Freeman.

Tom (Jim Caviezel) and Claire Kubik (Ashley Judd) are a happily married couple. Very much in love, they are trying to have a baby, despite Claire’s crazy schedule as a successful lawyer. However their happiness gets challenged by one shocking incident: Tom is arrested, and taken to a military facility. This is how Claire learns that her beloved husband Tom is in fact Ron Chapman, an ex-sergeant who changed his identity because he was being accused of multiple murders. Despite her shock, Claire believes Tom’s innocence, and decides to defend him when the appointed military lawyer (Adam Scott) turns out to be a rookie. She also enlists the help of the brilliant former military attorney Charles W. Grimes (Morgan Freeman).

To make matters more complicated, her carefree sister (Amanda Peet) moves in with her, and starts dating the rookie. Moreover the judge seems to be favoring the opposing counsel (Michael Gaston), and doesn’t seem to be care whether Tom is innocent or not. Claire himself occasionally doubts her husband, but she knows in her heart that he is a good man and she needs to win this. However the military seems determined to do anything to sabotage her and her case, and the sole survivor of the murderers is not happy about her either. Can Claire and her team survive all this and free Tom?

High Crimes is a very entertaining and absolutely engaging legal drama/thriller from 2002. The acting is great, and it offers many twists and turns that makes you change your mind about Tom’s innocence again and again. It’s only fault is the ultimate twist, and when it comes. Anyone who has seen multiple movies will notice that the ending will offer something different than the outcome of the trial. And not all actions of characters (main and supporting) will make sense at the end. But these can be ignored, as the movie is a lot of fun to watch. It’s currently rated at 6.1 on IMDB. And I believe it is the delivery of the ending that stopped it from being rated at 7 or higher. A well-earned 7/10 from me. The acting, however, especially Jim Caviezel’s gets an 8.

Based on the novel by Joseph Finder.

Retired CIA agent Frank Moses (Bruce Willis) is living the quiet, suburban life. The highlight of his days is when he talks on the phone with Sarah (Mary-Louise Parker) – his representative for the pension fund: Even though they never met, they both have a crush on each other.

While Frank makes plans to meet in person, a team of assassins try to kill Frank. Frank escapes but now that he is a target. So he has to kidnap Sarah, who is unwilling to believe that Frank is in fact ex CIA. But she eventually believes him. Frank realizes that the hit has been ordered by CIA itself. And it is not just Frank. A past Guatemala operation has gotten lots of agents and a news reporter killed. So Frank pulls up a team he can trust – although he has to let each member know that he is not trying to kill them first.

His team includes ex-CIA Joe (Morgan Freeman), nutty but smart Marvin (John Malkovich), ex MI6 Victoria (Helen Mirren) and Russian Ivan (Brian Cox). At first the CIA was confident that their agent in charge, the highly capable William Cooper (Karl Urban) could take care of a “grandpa” agent but as it will turn out, this team of old agents and a civilian can really kick ass and raise mayhem. Catching Frank will be a lot harder than anticipated…

2011’s Golden Globe nominee for Best Picture (Comedy or Musical), Red is a pretty entertaining action/comedy that deliberately starts slow and follows with fast action and good comedy. The cast is incredible, the characters are hilarious. It is one of the most entertaining movies of Bruce Willis, who has been kicking ass in action films for over 2 decades now. And kudos to Helen Mirren, whose character totally destroys all the stereotypical movie roles a 65-year-old actress can get.

It’s unreasonable. It’s illogical. And the ending is predictable. But it is bloody good entertainment. It is hard to pick a favorite character but for me it is a tie between deadly Victoria and the paranoid Marvin who gets upset when he doesn’t kill anyone.

Written by Jon and Erich Hoeber. Directed by Robert Schwentke (Flightplan, The Time Traveler’s Wife). Based on the graphic novel created by Cully Hamner and Warren Ellis.

7 Fun Red Facts:

–          Nip Tuck’s Julian McMahon makes a guest appearance as the Vice President.

–          The cast also features Richard Dreyfuss.

–          The “Russian” Ivan is played by Brian Cox, who is actually Scottish.

–          Sex and the City’s Richard James Remar makes a guest appearance.

–          Between the cast, there are three Oscars in acting: Helen Mirren, Morgan Freeman and Richard Dreyfuss are Oscar-winning actors.

–          Weeds star Mary- Louise Parker used to date Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who also appeared in Weeds.

Favorite lines:

**

Sarah is not happy to be kidnapped.

Frank: I was just hoping you’d be a little more understanding of the situation.
Sarah:
I was hoping not to get kidnapped. Or drugged. I was hoping you’d have *hair*. So it looks like none of our dreams are coming true at the moment.

**

Frank (Willis) and Cooper (Karl Urban) are engaged in a deadly fight. Cooper first thinks he can beat Frank easily because of the age difference but Frank beats the crap out of Cooper.

Frank (locking Cooper in a wrestling position):Krodesky trained you?

Cooper: Yeah.

Frank: I trained Krodesky.

**

Marvin wants to kill the agent who is trying to kill them and has called Marvin an old man.. Frank had previously made him let her go, thinking she was an innocent civilian.

Marvin: Can I kill her now? (Frank nods and Marvin kills her) Old man, my ass!

**

Favorite scenes (minor spoilers):

–          Pretty much all the action scenes, especially the kidnapping of the V.P.

–          The very last scene.

Morgan Freeman and Antonio Banderas in Thick As Thieves
Morgan Freeman and Antonio Banderas in Thick As Thieves.

Ripley (Morgan Freeman) is an aging, master crook in debt to the Russian mafia. He requests the help of another expert thief, Gabriel (Banderas) to pull of a 4o-million-dollar heist. Ripley also has an attractive god-daughter called Alex (Radha Mitchell) whose father was killed- probably by none other than Ripley himself.

The movie shows us how fast and dangerous stunts Gabriel can pull and that Ripley can track him down. He gets Gabby’s interest by mentioning how much the theft will be worth. Gabby is also very interested in Alex…

Are you smelling clichés? Are you expecting Antonio’s character to get Alexa into bed within the second day he sees her? Are you also expecting Abby to care a lot for this woman that he sleeps with twice? Well, you are right. It is in so many ways a very typical script. It does have some good twists, although you will notice them coming. Well, clichés aren’t that big of a problem. How they explain the twists are. It is not logical at all.  But if you just don’t question anything, it is an OK movie.

Now, I really do have to write about some of the comments made about the movies and the actors though. I read this funny comment that Banderas was too old for the role. Trust me, the movie has many issues but the actor’s age is not one of them. Well, the fact that he can get the girl for instance is one of the few things that made sense. He is 49, in good shape and all though he has matured, he is good-looking. The problem is that his character just seems too plausible and too naive . Other than that the movie does entertain.  Just don’t think. About anything.
