You can’t stop rocknroll is the title song of the Twisted Sister album You can’t stop rocknroll. Having been an avid rock fan since I was  11, I always loved songs that celebrated my favorite music genre ever. As you grow up, you grow more flexible with music preferences. You can feel more relaxed about genres and that you wouldn’t be caught dead listening to ten years ago. Still, the core remains the same and it is rock n roll. Since it is a way of expression and celebrating life, parties and good fun (you guessed right, I am not exactly a Nirvana fan), I wanted to collect all my rock related posts under one roof post.

The nature of the article varies: Some include videos, lyrics and info, some list fun facts from the colorful world of musicians.

What do you mean You Haven’t Heard of Metallica?

So did you hear about Metallica? If you are slightly in the rock, there is a chance you heard of them. But as it happens, they are not as popular as I thought.

Now, I love some Metallica songs, either covers they did or their original. I don’t go to their concerts but my mp3 player has quite a few of their tracks. I grew up in the late 80s and 90s and probably belong to one of the last generations that express themselves with music.  When I grew up, it was a shame not to know who Pearl Jam were or when Kurt Cobain died. It was cool to despise Courtney love and it was even cooler to love Guns N’ Roses. They would literally laugh in your face if you didn’t associate a certain type of metal with Metallica. Years passed by and there came a time when they were considered so mainstream… What happened? They did not fall off the face off the earth or stop filling stadiums or selling records…

James Hetfield, Metallica concert image
Didn't front man James Hetfield's hair burn during a fire stunt a couple of years ago? That's why he had it cut, right? Oh, well no objections here if James wants to set us on fire. Well, metophorically. Image from: http://www.cianw.co.uk/wp-content/uploads

Maybe this friend of mine should hang with different crowds or hang with some older people. Because he plays the electric guitar and it is fun and cool and necessary to play Metallica. I have a classic guitar. Just like most my peers around my age, it was bought with the hopes that I could one day upgrade to electric and play electric guitar solos. Oh, the dream! I most wanted to play Paradise City by Guns n’ Roses. Ah, the dreams of the youth. Kidding, I am still young and I still dream. It’s just that I am tone-deaf and far too busy launching a writing career. But I had taken a course years ago and one of the first things I learned was to play the main melody of Nothing Else Matters by Metallica. Oh and Come As You Are by Nirvana. Good old times.

Well, thanks for reading this nostalgic rant of a rock a chick. So why not list your favorite songs by them? No, wait! Individual Metallica best ofs should be the subject for another article!

2010: Terrible Year for Rock ‘N Roll

2009 was a tragic year for music.  But it looks like 2010 is not that bright either. Scorpions are done, Steven Tyler fall off stage, Brett Michaels gets a brain hemorrhage and just we thought he recovered, it turns out he has a stroke and has a whole in his heart. Oh, and heavy metal/rock band DIO’s vocalist Ronnie James Dio died. He was recovering from stomach cancer.

It’s weird to see rock starts have all these health problems. Yeah, we are well aware that they are human, but they did get over a great deal of stuff in the past: death of best friends/band members (Steve Clark from Def Leppard, Cliff Burton from Metallica), loss of health, loss of crucial body parts (Rick Allen from Def Leppard) , drug addictions.(Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Aerosmith) , loss of their looks…But since they always seem to bounce back, it is just feels awful to have all the  bad news in a row. After all, they symbolize energy. Their stage shows rock us and their songs celebrate life, parties, sex, friendship and love. We grow up with them. Hell, our parents grew up with Aerosmith. It also reminds us of mortality and fragility of all.

Good Morning, Mr. Tyler. Going Down?: On everything Aerosmith

AEROSMITH :
THE BAND
THE BAND

Steven Tyler (lead vocals), Joe Perry (lead guitar), Brad Whitford (guitar), Tom Hamilton (bass), Joey Kramer (drums)

So the title is actually the line of a hot girl from the Love in an Elevator video. It is adressed to our beloved rock singer Steven Tyler.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE THEM! My first image/memory of Steven Tyler doing a cartwheel on a pool table and dancing around in the video of Sweet Emotion. If you do force me to choose, it is my fav. Aerosmith song. A second close might just be Walk This Way- ( the version with RUN DMC) and the way Steven just pulls his head through the wall and sings-the way he dances…just gets me every time. It is so them: so rock,so glam and such a wicked sense of humor…Just the way I like it. Over the years I collected a lot of their albums and sadly admit that didn’t have the chance to see them live yet. It is one of my rock n’ roll ambitions- to see them on stage before they are dead. (With people you never know when& how they will go-but of course with musicians it gets trickier: look at M.Jackson and Michael Hutchence of INXS).

I prefer them over Rolling Stones. I am a big fan of Steven’s vocals and Perry’s guitar. It was such a great moment when MTV awarded them with lifetime achievement award and the award was presented to them by Ulrich and Hetfield of Metallica. They talked about how they adored the band and how their walls were covered with the band’s posters. I have always had this respect for Metallica, even though I don’t like all of their songs. So I thought it was meaningful for the audience, James & Lars and Aerosmith all together.

Aerosmith is one of the reasons why I wish I could have been born in the late 70s. By the time, I started listening to glam, it was almost over. So people have treated me as this strange girl with this strange music taste. But I can’t understand how one can find them any less then amazing. One friend commented their songs could be boring- and it was one of their oldest and best. Obviously I am questioning her taste.

Aerosmith lyrics are perfect. They can be funny, romantic, sexy, ambitious or a combination of these. Morever, you can just dance your butt of to them. Here’s a sample from Love in an Elevator, just to get you nostalgic and in the groove.

“Workin’ like a dog fo de boss man, Workin’ for de company-

I’m bettin’ on the dice I’m tossin’ I’m gonna have a fantasy

But where am I gonna look?, They tell me that love is blind, I really need a girl like an open book-
to read between the lines

Love in an elevator- Livin’ it up when I’m goin’ down- Love in an elevator- Lovin’ it up ’til I hit the ground

Here is the video.

Their videos are brilliant. Each one is like a perfect little movie on its own. Do you remember Amazing- Alicia Silverstone and Stephen Dorff in it? How about Crazy- It features Liv Tyler ( Steven’s very own daughter and A. Silverstone). Hole in my soul was brilliant with the geek scientist trying to create the perfect woman..) Liv and Alicia just this incredible standard for beauty in the 90s.

The story is Steven didn’t know he had a daughter until she was 8 and her mom took her to a concert. He also says he knew she was his the moment he laid eyes on her. Some people keep wondering how such a guy had a child this pretty- I actually think she does take after him. Just look at the mouth. All the she might be a tad bit prettier than him. 😉 Oh and here are some images from the Crazy video:

So I grew up listening to these amazing guitar riffs and feeding on rock n’ roll.

Well, it is only appropriate to leave with the video that got me hooked in the first place…

Enjoy Sweet Emotion
