Mr. Sunshine starring Matthew Perry.
Mr. Sunshine starring Matthew Perry. Not always laugh-out-loud, but original, quirky and helluva lot of fun! Image via winkcity.blogspot.com

Ben Donovan’s (Matthew Perry) is managing The Sunshine Center, a popular venue that welcomes over 17.000 guests for important events such as sports games, concerts, the circus and more. While the 40-year-old Ben has his issues (he is a self-centered guy with commitment issues), he is practically the sanest person working there. His boss, Crystal (Allison Janney) is a nut job who barely has had a decent conversation with her adult son. She hires him to connect with him, but as Ben soon realizes, the guy has no skills. Then there is his ex friends-with- benefits Alice (Andrea Anders) who prefers Ben’s colleague (James Lesure, Las Vegas’ Mike) over him. As episodes progress, we get to see the competitive and shallow sides of the couple. Oh, and Ben’s assistant Heather (Portia Doubleday) is rumored to have set a guy on fire…

Mr. Sunshine is a lovely comedy/drama with the ever charming and entertaining Matthew Perry. His Ben is a very easy character to rela3te to, and you feel for him as he does in fact seem to be the only person getting real work done. He handles Crystal and her requests, and pulls the big events off. While his work mates are nutty, they are likable and well….what office isn’t full of nutty characters?

Ben is less depressing than Matthew’s previous TV show character Matt (Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip).  While it was a solid drama that I was sorry to let go, Mr. Sunshine is a lot lighter and it concentrates on the comedy rather than the drama. Mr. Sunshine show isn’t always hilarious and I don’t think the creators (Matthew Perry being one of them) never intended to give you stomach cramps from laughing. It is good entertainment with interesting characters. Let’s hope Mr. Sunshine gets more seasons. Even though Chandler will always be my favorite (and to me, the funniest) Matthew Perry character, it is always a pleasure watching him on screen.

Some Favorite lines:

Episode 1:

It is awkward since Alice dumped Ben (Matthew Perry) to be with Alonzo (James Lesure). Ben and Alonzo are walking, and Alonzo sees the elephant the circus is currently missing.

Alonzo: (seeing the elephant) Alfonso: There´s an elephant in the room

Ben: (taking it metaphorically): Yeah.

Alonzo: No, really.

Ben: What do you do in a situation like this?

Alfonso: I´m gonna run for my life.

Ben: Yeah that sounds good.

**

Episode 2:

Alice and Ben run across each other and compare their lowest moments:

Alice: I just stole frisbees from blind children

Ben: I just got a hot teenager’s phone number

Then they both look down and go their separate ways.

**

Fun notes:

  • Andrea Anders co-starred in Joey, the Friends spin-off. She starred opposite Matt LeBlanc.
  • James Lesure and Matthew Perry co-starred in the drama Studio Sunset on the Sunset Strip.

The Ron Clark Story starring Matthew Perry

The Ron Clark Story starring Matthew Perry.
The Ron Clark Story starring Matthew Perry.

Ron Clark (Matthew Perry) is a school teacher who just relocated to New York City. He consciously chooses a school in Harlem to make a difference. However his new students prove to be more than he bargained for: they are rebellious, disrespectful, lazy and worst of all; they hate him at first sight.

Ron does his best trying to teach them respect and consideration, as well as school topics but he fails on all accounts. But when he is about to quit, he is encouraged by his aspiring actress friend/crush and decides to fight the kids with unusual yet intriguing methods.

These methods eventually help him to win over his students, the headmaster (Judith Buchan) as well as the parents.

The Ron Clark Story is a TV drama from 2006, starring Matthew Perry. I stumbled upon it on TV last weekend, about 15 minutes after it started. As typical as the storyline is, it is a very enjoyable, warm-hearted film and it is not a bad thing to spend time on if you like Matthew Perry.

While we saw many movies about the ambitious/caring teacher vs. the nightmare students with potential, this is actually a true story. Plus, some of Matthew’s coping methods are really fun – such as the chocolate milk/vomit challenge as well as the history lesson in rap.

Recommended only if you are in the mood for something very familiar. You can read more about the real Ron Clark on wikipedia. 7.5. on IMDB.

NUMB starring Matthew Perry- Strongly Recommended for the Depressed

Numb movie review, starring Matthew Perry
Matthew Perry starrs as Hudson in the 2007 movie Numb

Hudson (Matthew Perry) has a big, psychiatric problem: He is depersonalized- it is a depressive state of mind where he doesn’t feel anything is real, that he doesn’t belong and he is anxious all the time. He hates being this way but he can’t seem to do anything about it either. In his own words, he is fucked up.

He hasn’t had the most fun childhood or the most caring mother but his life as a screenwriter hasn’t been this bad- until now. He tries therapy, prescribed drugs, activities… nothing seems to work. However, meeting the beautiful and fun Sara (Lynn Collins) at least gives him the illusion of happiness and although he is in love with her, the thought that she deserves better keeps nagging at him.

As this movie takes a look at Hudson’s life for 93 minutes, we embark on a bittersweet journey on the mostly dark side of life. There are some really funny bits due some of his therapy sessions and some of his psychiatrists and some desperate reactions from Hudson. He is an original character yet not hard to relate to. In fact, if any of you have gone through any type of depression (and I have. I’m talking about the real thing here, not the occasional blues), this movie just hits home. It is just so real. The bitterness, the pain, the hope, the comedy, functioning, love and relationships…It is a good movie. It is sincere and real.

Matthew Perry is such a good actor. He is so terrific at comedy (Friends, The Whole Nine Yards, Serving Sara…) that sometimes I forget he can do drama. Sure, he has proven his dramatic skills at Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. But now I can honestly say, Perry is just very good. The movie is written/directed by Harris Goldberg. The feel of the film makes me think either Perry or the director (maybe both) might have gone through a similar process.

If you don’t like it, you probably never have been actually depressed. Well, I am jealous. But if you have, just do not miss this movie. It just might help with the healing process. And you have to love the tagline: Love is better unmedicated.

17 Again starring Matthew Perry and Zac Efron
17 Again starring Matthew Perry and Zac Efron

Starring: Zac Efron, Matthew Perry, Leslie Mann, Michelle Trachtenberg, Sterling Knight, Thomas Lennon

So most of us saw similar movies before. Of course we have. It is 2009!!! Some people like it and some think writers should go after new ideas. But the thing is, for the people who do like these kind of stories- “Big”, “13 going on 30”, hell even “back to the future” in some aspects, and so on- this movie definitely delivers. It is funny with great situational and physical comedy;complete with one-liners.

About the plot: Mike O’ Donnell ( Matthew Perry) is in his late 30s and an utter failure at all aspects of his life. His wife is divorcing him, his kids despise him, has a crappy job that he manages to get fired from…And this is all his doing. He used to be ( played by Zac Efron) a promising basketball star in his highschool. He is goegeous, popular, successful and is dating the girl of his dreams. But he receives some shocking news at the beginning of the most important game of his life and after that his life goes downhill…At least he thinks so and his -Scarlett (Leslie Mann)- having been fed up with his complaining all through the years, can’t take it anymore. So he meets a stranger, makes a wish and bizarrely enough, he finds himself at the age of 17 again. Except this time, he is not 17 in 1989. He finds himself going to the same school with his daughter and son. He realizes he barely knew what went on his kids’ lives and to make matter worse, his daughter (Trachtenberg) is constantly making out with the school’s bully who is making his son’s life hell…His best friend Ned-played by Lennon- is hilarious as the rich,sci-fi junkie who now has to pretend as Mike’s dad.

You don’t have to like Zac Efron to like this movie. I personally have a kind of love&hate relationship with him. Before Hairspray, I hadn’t seen him in any of his high school musical movies. I had seen his pictures/movie trailers however; and I thought he was just another teen actor/pop star who was there to attract young girls and make them dream. He was baby-faced and well too blond. Then, I watched Hairspray and frankly didn’t realize Zac was in it.I had to double-check the credits. He was great as the promising, jet-black haired, handsome star of a musical TV show. He used a great, thick singing voice to sing 50s/60s rock’n’roll songs and sounded so unlike himself. As an avid rock’n’roll fan, I loved his role and how he carried out.He didn’t look bad next to great talents like John Travolta, Christopher Walken and James Marsden. So just when I decided he had more then the high school musical going on for him, he seized to surprise me. Until 17 Again, that is. Yes, he plays a high schooler. At 22 and baby-faced, he looks perfectly 17. He is less blond, thank goodness and he is pretty good as a comedic actor. He actually didn’t disappoint me as the younger version of Matthew Perry. Some people are hung up on the idea of Zac can not be the younger version of Perry, lookswise. But then again, I claim that he should be flattered since Perry is an amazing comedian. Having played my favourite “Friend” Chandler, he is one of my fav. comedians of all times. Is Efron just as talented and funny? Not yet. Are both actors good casting choices? Absolutely. And if Zac can get more diverse roles, he might just pleasantly charm and surprise us.
