Paul Ryan (Kevin Zegers) is a smart, well-educated young man who was failed by the American dream. He can’t land a good job, he still lives with his parents. His mother is sick, and their insurance doesn’t cover her medication. Fed up with the rich being entitled to everything, he comes up with a great plan to make 3 million dollars. He recruits two university students – Dean (Devon Bostick) and Jenna (Tatiana Maslany) with suicidal/violent tendencies, and together they kidnap the rich and spoiled Hailey (Laure Vandervoort), Nick (Dustin Milligan) and Jeff (John Bregar).

Hailey, Nick and Jeff are three childhood best friends whose rich businessmen fathers have also been friends for ages. As they are on their way to meet their fathers at Nick’s father Richard’s (Ray Liotta) house, they are kidnapped by Jenna and Dean and taken to a remote lake house. While Dean doesn’t like it one bit, Paul is in charge and he has even dated Jenna to manipulate her.

Paul has thought of everything. He never calls Jenna or Dean, he never talks to the hostages or shows his face. He uses gloves, and he uses a voice jammer when he makes the ransom call. It is simple: Each father is to give 1 million dollars to save his kid. But when Jenna learns that Jeff’s father hasn’t met the other fathers yet, she loses it and kills Jeff.

From then on, it becomes the ultimate challenge for Richard and Clifford (Hailey’s dad – played by Stephen McHattie) to keep Jeff’s death and the kidnapping from his father, Bob (Victor Garber). There is constant tension as friendships and motives are put to test, and desperate times will call for desperate measures as Richard reveals to Clifford that he doesn’t have the money…

With Paul hardly able to control Jenna (or Dean, Hailey and Nick try to escape. Even though the initial plan is perfect, can Paul pull off getting the money without letting Nick and Hailey be harmed.? And there is always the danger of Bob endangering the plans once he finds out….

What makes The Entitled special?

The Entitled does a great job of portraying grey characters. Well, apart from Dean and Jenna who are already too lost and too dangerous to be of any good to anyone…

But Paul is the perfect “villain”- he commits the crime for a perfectly good reason. You root for him from the beginning. Here you have a guy trying to save his mother, as opposed to 3 spoiled brats who drink and do drugs and don’t really care about the outside world. Of course Nick is a little more responsible, but he hangs with Hailey and Jeff all the time.

Paul is smart, calculating and is actually quite logical in who he decides to save and who he doesn’t mind hurting . You don’t have a career criminal or a psychopath. But he is cold-blooded when he needs to be. He has done his research, and he has planned his every move. And he seems to deal with the unexpected well…

The rich fathers are to be empathized with as they are loving parents to their kids. However we know they didn’t make their money by being honest and fair-so a part of us despises them just like Paul does. We don’t want the kidnapped kids to die, but we definitely want Paul to get away with it-with the money.

It might have some clichés, but it avoids a lot of clichés really well. The pace is slow sometimes, but it never fails to keep you wondering.

There is the issue of two minor plot holes, but we don’t know for sure if they are plot holes. Meaning: The ending we get may not be as definite as we think, and in that sense, they are not plot holes but just situations created to keep us wondering.

At 6.2 on IMDB, 2011’s The Entitled is under-rated. It might not be a game-changer in the drama/thriller genre, but it plays the game very well with some fresh angles. Not to mention a great cast.

Fun Notes about the Cast

  • Laura Vandervoort played alien Lisa, the queen’s daughter in sci-fi series V (2009 version).
  • Victor Garber plays fathers often, but his characters are really different from each other. For instance, in the J.J.Abrams-created TV series Alias (starring Jennifer Garner), he played Sydney Bristow’s father Jack Bristow a seasoned agent with secrets, and a darn good poker face.
  • Stephen McHattie is no stranger to shady characters. Haven fans know him as Rev. Driscoll, who did everything in his power to make the “troubled” citizens’ life difficult.
  • Kevin Zegers plays grey characters often. In The Narrows, he found himself working for the local mob so that he could get into photography classes. In It’s a Boy Girl Thing he was a popular jock who didn’t exactly treat his brainy neighbor well. In The Jane Austen Book Club, he seduced his high school French teacher.

In many ways, Mike (Kevin Zegers) is a typical young man from Brooklyn: he lives with his dad Vinny  (Vincent D’Onofrio), has a lousy job driving cars, and has a long-time girlfriend Gina (Monica Keena) who expects an engagement ring, However, he wants out – and he wants his love for photography to be the way out.

While his skills have earned him a partial scholarship at a Manhattan university, this scholarship isn’t nearly enough and his dad won’t let him get any loans. So he decides that working for the local mob Tony (Titus Welliver) as a package carrier is his only solution.

So Mike enrolls in college, and gets to learn from his photographer. He even meets the beautiful Kathy (Sophia Bush). Problem? His dad isn’t really fond of his new part time job, and he is not all that supportive of school. His finance still wants to get married, and his friendship with an old neighborhood acquaintance Nicky (Eddie Cahill) will complicate things even further.

Can Mike get out alive, without compromising his dreams?

**

The Narrows is a slow-paced film, but the contrast between Mike’s two worlds makes the film interesting enough. Sure , it is dialogue heavy – and it doesn’t have that many action moments. But all in all, it is a watchable drama. And like with most dramas, there is a character you root for- despite how stupid some of his actions can be. And I quite liked the ending, especially Vinny’s part in it.

Good cast, familiar story – with a nice little “artistic” twist on our main character’s part.

Favorite Scene: How Mike captures Nick’s eyes when he is down on the floor.

Fun Note: Eddie Cahill is more than a familiar for Friends fans as he played Rachel’s hot assistant for several episodes in season …

Frozen starring Shawn Ashmore, Kevin Zegers and Emma Bell

Frozen starring Kevin Zegers, Shawn Ashmore and Emma Bell.
Frozen starring Kevin Zegers, Shawn Ashmore and Emma Bell. 2010. Written and directed by Adam Green.

Three friends Joe, Dan and Parker (Shawn Ashmore, Kevin Zegers and Emma Bell) are three friends enjoying a weekend ski getaway. Well, it is more like Dan (Kevin Zegers)’s girlfriend Parker (Emma Bell) is trying to blend in to which would typically be a boys’ outing. The boys have been friends since primary school and Joe is not all that happy with the changing dynamics. But as it turns out, the adjustment would be the least of their worries as the trio decides to fit in a one late night ski adventure. Bad luck ends them up in stranded in the air on the airlift. Things couldn’t have been much worse as the power goes off, lights go down and the lounge closes for the week.

From then on, it is a constant struggle with their possible upcoming death from freezing, while trying to decide if they should try out riskier things for the chance of survival.

I really would rather not give any details, as the bigger part of the movie is about how these three people try to handle life-or-death dilemmas, while trying not to completely lose it. There is one minor spoiler though – if you are watching this because Zegers is in the lead, just know Shawn Ashmore has more screen time.

That said, the acting is really decent, the effects are satisfactory and it is a good drama/thriller if you enjoy survival films. Now, I wish I could see it at the theaters. I ended up watching it on small screen and while the drama is effective, I suspect a ground sound system on a huge screen would have a lot to do with a thrilling effect.

Don’t get me wrong though, nature does provide some scary elements. And if you turn on the empathy mode just a tiny bit, there is no reason you shouldn’t enjoy the film.

Yeah, there were moments of boredom on my part- but remember- the film is about three people on a ski-lift in the freezing cold while I was perfectly safe and sound on my bed, while I had my laptop to entertain me. Now, there was this user review that said while Frozen is a decent film, it doesn’t do to skiing what Jaws did for swimmers. Well, I think Frozen is not meant to scare you about skiing. It is meant to freak you out about getting on a ski-lift in the middle of the night while there is practically no one around.

It is not a prize, but it sure as hell not a waste of your time either. Written & directed by Adam Green.

6.4 on IMDB. 7/10 from me – for the overall effort and effect.

The Jane Austen Book Club Maria Bello, Hugh Dancy, Kevin Zegers and Emily Blunt

Jocelyn (Maria Bello), Kathy Baker (Bernie), Amy Brenneman (Sylvia), Prudie (played by Emily Blunt- is brought to the group by Bernie) are all friends with distinctly different personalities and chosen life paths. Sylvia is married to her high school sweetheart, who happens to be Jocelyn’s ex. Her husband has left her for another woman and she is not taking this very well. Their lesbian daughter is not too happy about her dad’s affair either and she seeks happiness through the extreme sports. Jocelyn is beautiful, single, loves dogs and as much as she enjoys fixing people up, she doesn’t seem that interested in dating herself. Bernie seems to be the quirky and extra colorful one. She has been married many times yet she is not the least pessimistic about romance and relationships. She is also friends with the French teacher Prudie who considers herself much more European. She is married to Dean (Marc Blucas) who doesn’t match her intellectually and they don’t seem to have much in common anyway. One of her students- appropriately played by the sexy Kevin Zegers has set his eyes on her and she is ready and willing to be seduced. After all this might really spice up her otherwise very dull and predictable life.

The women decide to start a book club, reading Jane Austen’s novels. It will be fun and it is supposed to provide distraction for…..When Jocelyn meets the younger and cute Grigg (Hugh Dancy), she decides to include him in the book club- secretly planning to hook him up with Sylvia. Of course sci-fi nut Grigg has agreed to be in the club to get close to Jocelyn.

Months pass by as this group reads, gathers and talks about the books. We see the relationships developed- and the comparisons/resemblance to real life events/characters as more funny and complicated events follow. After all, Jocelyn doesn’t seem all that pleased with her own matchmaking plans after a while.

Yes, this is I guess easily a chick flick. But if a guy is in the complaining mode about women and not figuring about what they want and why they want that stuff, it might wash over well. And Dancy’s character provides a lovely take on sci-fi and why it is not simply about “aliens and spaceships” but rather people – he insists that Jocelyn reads his favorites. It is all in the name of good fun as sexes gather a better understanding of each other through classic novels. And it helps if you like Austen.
