Car mechanic Benny (Aidan Quinn) has been living with and taking care of his sister Joon (Mary Stuart Masterson) ever since they lost their parents a long time ago. Joon is mentally troubled and has certain obsessions. Her problems make her intolerant to certain things such as extreme noise, traffic and chaos. While social consultants advise Benny to register in a private care facility, Benny is perfectly content with the living arrangements and so is Joon.

Benny’s idea of fun is playing poker with his friends. At one game, the stakes get a bit unusual. One of Benny’ friends puts his eccentric cousin Sam (Johnny Depp) on the table. Benny loses and ends up taking Sam at home. Sam can’t read or write but he is a total movie nut and he is acting a lot like the silent movie actor Buster Keaton. It doesn’t take long for him to get used to Joon’s “eccentricities” and Joon has a lot of fun having him around. In fact they seem to form a special bond which leads to a romantic involvement. But how will Benny react? And how are these two ever going to make a relationship work? And will Benny be ever to concentrate on his romantic life while he is concerned about Joon all the time?

Benny and Joon is a delightful, emotional and very fun romantic comedy/drama. The performances are lovely but of course as always Johnny Depp shines through. Oliver Platt and Julianne Moore take supporting roles – Oliver Platt as Benny’s friend and Julianne Moore as Ruthie, Benny’s romantic interest. The soundtrack is just lovely and both Benny and Joon’s and Joon and Sam’s relationships are well-developed throughout the film. This film is so much more than a romantic/drama/comedy.

Directed by Jeremiah S. Chechik and written by Barry Berman and Lesley McNeil, 1993.

Rated 6.9 on IMDB. Well, 7 or above 7 seems pretty fair to me. Benny and Joon is a total Johnny Depp gem. Of course the film is based in reality and you are having your most fun Tim Burton/ Johnny Depp collaborations, this might not be ideal for you. However, I do suggest you give this one a shot.

And there will be SPOILERS

Well, there will be-not because I want to tell you the ending- but because you will know what to expect from the movie.

The Plot

Catherine Stewart (Julianne Moore) is going through a very problematic and lonely time in her life: Her husband D avid (Liam Neeson) seems to be evasive, negligent and overly flirting with other women. Well, younger and beautiful women, to be exact. To top this, her son Michael (Max Thieriot) seems to despise her and is a lot closer to his father.

At this particular juncture in her life, she runs into a very beautiful young woman named Chloe (Amanda Seyfried). Chloe is an expensive hooker/escort who Catherine used to see with different men from her office window. Yeah, Catherine is an expensive gynecologist with a big office and an amazing house and they hang out in the same neighborhoods.

Anyway, one day, a desperate Catherine gets to meet Chloe. And no longer able to stand the suspicions about her husband, she hires Chloe to see if she can seduce her husband. She does, as expected, and reports back to Catherine.

Now, of course, this is the point where you expect any woman to do one of the following:

–          To confront David and to either forgive or dump him.

–          Or not confront him and just deal with it on her own.

–          Or maybe have a little affair of her own out of spite/revenge.

I am guessing, however, you don’t expect her to be turned on by Chloe’s storytelling about how she slept with her husband and you definitely don’t expect Catherine to sleep with Chloe.

OK, I am guessing, some of the men would expect or at least want Chloe and Catherine to get together. So to satisfy your curiousity, there is a sex scene with nudity. And it doesn’t involve Liam Neeson.

Having gotten that out of the way, the movie takes a turn where Chloe is obsessed with Catherine. Maybe she was from the beginning, but it becomes much more apparent. She would be more than willing to be her girlfriend. Of course Catherine wants none of that. So Chloe goes after the son. Why not the husband, if he enjoyed the affair as much as she described? Maybe because he never slept with her in the first place and all the scenes Chloe described were nothing more than detailed storytelling?

I will admit that the movie is not exactly boring. However, the writing doesn’t really flow naturally. Sure, it is an original twist, compared to other “fatal attraction” sort of movies where the woman had an actual affair with the man and then threatened the whole family  because she wanted the man. Herevwe have a girl who wanted the woman. And she was never really a violent threat, but an obsessed and emotional one who did everything to get closer to Catherine, rather than destroy her.

But how is it supposed to make sense that a woman who has been heterosexual all her life, depressed about her son and husband, will hire a prostitute to prove he is cheating and then accept her words as proof? So you don’t believe your husband? Fine, hire a P.I. Because P.I.s aren’t paid to tell stories. They are paid to show proof: video, photographs…You know, actual proof.

And why would you send the hooker to seduce him? There is a big chance that she could want him for herself. He is handsome, well-off and well, nice! So let’s say that you are so desperate, you don’t think naturally and you did hire her. And you believed her. When did you decide to sleep with her???

I know writing a good screenplay is difficult. And while this one makes an OK job for the most part, some things just don’t really add up. How stupid can a woman be? So she slept with her. Wasn’t she supposed to wake up about how obsessed Chloe was when she didn’t want money or wanted to give her hairpin that was given to her by her mother…How twisted is that?

Oh- and then there is the scene where she does prove to herself, unexpectedly, that in fact her husband never cheated.  He was so hurt and disappointed. Do you think he would have forgiven her so easily if she had slept with a man? Oh, you might see the ending coming. But you may or may not see the final scene coming. I am wondering whether you would say “Great job” or “Come on!!! You have got to be kidding me!”

While the director is a man (Atom Egoyan), I am surprised to see that the screenwriters are women.  It might be old-fashioned of me but I find everything in the movie very hard to relate to, as a woman. I also find it hardly believable that Liam Neeson’s  character would actually say no to all women, even though they weren’t really having sex anymore and his gorgeous female students were probably coming on to him. I am not just buying that. Call me a cynic.

I do, however, have to admit that this movie is much more intriguing than the last love triangle movie I saw Liam Neeson in. That time he wasn’t suspected of cheating or wasn’t flirting with anyone. He was being cheated on by his beloved wife who was cheating on him with Antonio Banderas’ character. The movie was called The Other Man.

I think I should give this movie a 6, that is the highest rating I can give. It had its moments and it certainly had flaws. Tell me you didn’t see Liam wasn’t cheating the moment we weren’t given actual scenes but just story telling from Chloe?

If you like dramas/thrillers, twisted characters with the most irrational behavior and the actors, see it. It is a 6.6 on IMDB.

Laws of Attraction and Pierce Brosnan

Pierce Brosnan
Pierce Brosnan

Brosnan. Pierce Brosnan.

Oh come on, I had to refer to James Bond. It is a classic. And given that Pierce Brosnan is my all time favorite Bond, I earned that introduction. Yep, you read it right. It is not Sean Connery. And heaven forbid, it is definitely not Daniel Craig (although he might be my least favorite). To me, Daniel is so…not charismatic or charming or attractive (and Bond should really be all those things)! And he is so…so…so blond! (I had this funny conversation with my friend where she counter argued that she does not object to a Bond with blond hair but a blond Batman should never have existed- a.k.a Val Kilmer. Val is my favorite Batman so..each to her own, I guess.) Anyways, Pierce is the man. He is the perfect 007. He is hot and well-built. It doesn’t take a lot to seduce women. I wish Pierce could have played James Bond a couple of more times- the guy grows even more handsome with age anyway. He used to be a pretty boy who has turned into this gorgeous man. He also has this contagious smile that seems to bring out all his lust for and joy of life.

He is not just an action actor by any means. Sure, he has done a good job with Thomas Crown Affair as well but putting Pierce in romantic roles is a damn good idea. Have you seen the 2004 movie Laws of Attraction? It is a typical rom-com so if you are expecting something different, that ain’t it. However romantic comedies aren’t really about the endings or twists anyway. Let’s go through the elements.

Clichés?

1) The leading female Audrey (Julianne Moore) is a lawyer who is organized, almost to the point of obsessiveness. Now the writers do love to portray women as annoyingly tidy and men messy, right?

2) Our male lead Daniel (Pierce Brosnan) is also a lawyer who could not have been less organized. He is messy, funny and charming.

3) The female is pessimistic is about love yet our male – despite being a divorce lawyer- is just a happy-go-lucky romantic. Now I haven’t seen a guy that fun, smart, attractive and entertaining who also happens to be a romantic. And yes it will take only a little time for him to develop feelings for the cynical yet likable Audrey.

4) Opposites attract. Rivals are attracted to each other. Yeah, whatever.

5) You know it is a happily after. Check out the genre and the poster.

BUT…

1) I like Julianne Moore and I like Pierce Brosnan. He definitely pulls out scruffy well. And frankly I’d rather watch a typical rom-com then over-pretentious and disappointing drama/thrillers like Blindness or The Forgotten.

2) The storyline It is fun. You see Audrey and Daniel meet as opposing councils during a trial. They realize the other one is a worthy opponent and after some fun and games, Daniel and Audrey go out on a dinner, supposedly not a date. Of course when the story mixes mutual attraction with heavy alcohol and fun and…yeah, they have sex. However the next day they do have a trial to attend to and Daniel has picked this exact moment to take Audrey seriously and looks more professional and efficient whereas you can tell that Audrey had a “wild” night. Moreover, Daniel also uses a below-the-belt trick at the trial and wins. Of course Audrey declares war and from then on, the competition gets tough and fun, reaching a peak when Daniel gets a client Audrey is after: a famous fashion designer (Parker Posey) divorcing her cheating rocker husband Thorne (Michael Sheen). So Audrey strikes back by signing Thorne. The case research requires a trip to couple’s estate in Ireland and Ireland…is a lovely country, full of potential for romance. So it seems like Audrey and Daniel are best buddies compared to their spiteful clients and another night full of fun and drinks leads to…let’s say more than just sex: Marriage… How the hell are two competing divorce lawyers gonna explain this to the judge?

3) I love rockers and I love rock and I appreciate the humor that comes with it. Michael Sheen is so funny as the spoiled musician.

So…

The movie is fun. If you like Pierce Brosnan/Michael Sheen/Julianne Moore and/or romantic comedies, you shouldn’t miss it. Otherwise, well…try something else.
