Crazy, Stupid, Love starring Steve Carell, Julianne Moore, Ryan Gosling & Emma Stone. Co-starring Kevin Bacon and Marisa TOmei. Hilarious, emotional and romantic.

When Emily, his wife of 25 years (Julianne Moore), announces that she has slept with a guy at work (Kevin Bacon), Cal Weaver (Steve Carell) finds himself depressed. He spends his nights in a bar, complaining about his wife to whoever he sees.

Jacob (Ryan Gosling) is the complete opposite. He is young, rich, well-groomed and he spends his nights easily picking up women, with the exception of Hannah (Emma Stone)-who would rather marry a nice but boring guy rather than sleep with a cocky player.

When Jacob realizes what a hopeless case Cal is, he decides to take him under his wing, gives him a make-over and teaches him how to pick up women.  But just when Cal has become the excellent student, Hannah decides that her life is indeed to boring and she decides to have sex with Jacob just for the hell of it.

And while Cal is conflicted between his current pick-up skills and his ongoing for his feelings for his wife, his new friend Jacob is nowhere to be found. He is just too busy falling in love with Hannah…

Crazy Stupid Love is all that I can ask from a modern romantic comedy. It is funny, it has its emotional moments backed up with more hilarity. It has likeable characters, a decent script and a couple of fun surprises. Not to mention the great cast: Steve Carrell, Julianne Moore, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Marisa Tomei and Kevin Bacon. Enjoyed every moment of it, and it is strictly recommended. Currently rated 7.8/10 on imdb.com.

Fun Notes

* In the movie, Julainne Moore’s son is reading The Scarlet Letter for school. At one emotiona outburst i class, he says that the “A” stands for “assholes, as the characters in the book fall in love like assholes and die like assholes”. But he decides to get a “J” on his chest to impress his 17-year-oldy babysitter, referencing the book.

* Emma Stone, who plays Ryan Gosling’s love interest, starred in a movie called Easy A, where she playe a high school student who kept comparing herself to The Scarlet Letter’s main character Hester.

Favorite Lines

Emily: They still make you read The Scarlet Letter? You’d think someone else would have written something better by now.

—

Hannah (to Jacob, after he has taken his shirt off): Seriously? You look like you’ve been photoshopped!

Plot

Jules (Julianne Moore) and Nic (Annette Bening) have been together a long time. Despite their own issues, and the issues of their two teenage kids Joni (Mia Wasikowska) and Laser (Josh Hutcherson), they are managing. But when Laser decides to find their sperm donor dad Paul (Mark Ruffalo) with the help of Joni, things get way out of hand:  The kids really like their fun, laid-back dad – and he is a true contrast to their over-controlling mom Nic. To make things worse, Jules likes Paul too. And when Paul hires Jules to design his garden, things get even more complicated as something starts between them. How much of a change can a modern, 21st century family can take?

Review – with Spoilers

The bad:

–          The actions of characters & the depicting of characters:

The Kids Are All Right is an all right film, although it is a bit overrated. It has its moments and the acting is fine.

It’s the story and how the characters are shown that I have a problem with. We have a lesbian couple who get turned on by watching gay men porn. They tell us, and Laser, that human sexuality is complicated and we try to roll with that. But never at any point Jules thinks she is bisexual. Yet she jumps Paul’s bones almost the first moment they are alone together. Then she has sex with him again. But we are supposed to buy that she is %100 gay. Fine. And while Julianne Moore can be quite pretty when she wants to be, she doesn’t quite have a moment of attractiveness, or even really femininity at this film. I’ll never know how the ever hot-blooded Paul, who all the straight women around him are either trying to bed or are already bedding, found in Jules. OK. So let’s suppose he is all hormones and no ethics- that he will jump any woman when given the chance. But we have him falling for Jules. What the…?

And yes, of course Nic eventually finds out. And she goes ballistic. But interestingly, she is more mad at Paul. The kids are more mad at Paul. They treat him like a total disappointment. And while he is not the ideal father figure, he is kind, and warm-hearted and he did welcome the kids into his life, no questions asked. It’s Jules who was married, who cheated on their mom and yet it is Paul who ends up alone.

I never quite get it when people become more angry at the other man/woman rather than their own spouse. Yes, the other person showed total ill judgment sleeping with a married person, but he/she is not the one who married you. He/she is not the one who cheated on you. I always think that if you are not going to be equally angry, you are supposed to be angrier at the person who actually had responsibilities about you.  Jules got another chance. Despite how naïve and weird he is, Paul deserved one too.

–          Sex is reduced to just animal sex. Did we really need to see that much of Mark Ruffalo humping around?

The good:

–          The acting is really good. Not just by Bening, Moore and Ruffalo, but the kids did a great job too. I’ll enjoy watching them in other movies.

–          It is funny how Jules and Nic were thinking that their son might be gay and they were actually disappointed that he wasn’t, but he had found his dad.

–          Paul’s overall reactions to the event. “I love lesbians” reaction when he found out both Nic and Jules gave birth to one child of his and that they were together.

Worth Watching?

–          If you are a fan of the actors, and can’t resist the Oscar buzz ( the movie was nominated for 4 Oscars – Best Actress for Annette Bening, Best Supporting Actor for Ruffalo, Best Film and Best Screenplay, though it received none of the awards), it won’t bore you. It might annoy and disappoint you a bit, but I don’t think you will regret the time you put into it. But while it has some potential, there is a big chance it won’t be listed in your best movie experiences.

Directed and co-written by Lisa Cholodenko. Made in 2010. Currently 7.3 on IMDB.com

Fun notes:

This isn’t the only movie Moore does something against her character’s suggested sexuality. In Chloe, she is supposedly straight , married to Liam Neeson. She suspects her husband is cheating on her. But in the end, she ends up cheating on him- with a woman.

The Fugitive starring Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones
The Fugitive starring Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones. Co-starring Joee Pantoliano, Julianne Moore and Sela Ward. Directed by Andrew Davis. 1993.

Dr. Richard Kimble (Harrison Ford) is a highly successful, well-off and respected heart surgeon. However one day, he comes home to find an attacker and his wife Helen murdered. The murderer – who has one prosthetic arm – gets away. Kimble, desperate to revive his wife, leaves his fingerprints everywhere. For the lazy cops, he is the perfect suspect. After all, there are no other fingerprints around other than Richard’s. It also helps their case that she had a life insurance and Richard was the only beneficiary.

So Richard is sentenced to prison until he is killed by lethal injection. However while the convicts are being transferred to the prison, one of the prisoners fakes a heart-attack, causes enough chaos for some of the guards to get injured. Since the driver gets killed, the bus crashes into a railroad. Kimble barely makes it out with his life and seizes his one chance to escape.

Samuel Gerard, Marshall, responsible for prisoners, is pissed that prisoners have gotten away and he takes over Kimble’s case with full control and he is determined to catch Kimble no matter what.

Despite the fact that the whole country is after him, Kimble manages to dodge cops and starts his own quest to catch his wife’s murderer and prove his innocence.

So the fascinating great cat and mouse game starts. However the mouse is just as smart, maybe even smarter than the cat. And instead of running away, the mouse will cleverly involve the cat in his quest for innocence…

The Fugitive (1993) is a terrific and old-fashioned (in a very good sense) action/thriller/drama. Harrison-Ford, as usual, is very at home in this action-packed role as the smart protagonist. Tommy Lee Jones is perfect as the “cat”. Note that Tommy Lee won Oscar for Best Supporting Actor with this role. The movie was also nominated for Best Cinematography, Best Sound Effects, Best Editing, Best Film, Best Sound and Best Music Oscars.

The Fugitive is based on the TV Series The Fugitive from 1963. Co-starring in the film are Julianne Moore and Joe Pantoliano. Directed by Andrew Davis, written by Jeb Stuart and
David Twohy. Rated 7.8 on IMDB, voted by over 96.000 viewers. I do agree. This movie is a real threat and it is not a movie that will lose from its age.

What the hell? Yes, there will be spoilers. But trust me this movie is really bad so it is to your advantage to know.

Yes, it is not a good thing when a film starts just fine, albeit a bit slow but promises to be an intelligent thriller with a touch of horror and drama and fine acting but then ends up including witches, extremely religious undertone, a villain who is just one of the most ridiculous and pointless villains in history and all that…

I got out a little bit of a rant and now I feel better.

Now, for the record, I really like Julianne Moore. She is a terrific actress and a really pretty woman even without make-up. And it is no secret that I love Jonathan Meyers. He is a great actor and yes, most movie addicts prefer when a decent script comes with talented actors who also happen to be pretty.

And the story starts out pretty cool: Psychiatrist Cara Jessup (Julianne Moore) believes in her science but she believes in God as well. Even the random street murder of her husband hasn’t faltered her faith, but her young daughter (Brooklynn Proulx) and Cara’s father, also a psychiatrist (Jeffrey DeMunn) refuse to believe in God after the tragedy. Despite all this, they seem to be a happy and easy-going family, along with Cara’s younger brother Stephen (Nathan Corddry). However it all gets disrupted when Cara’s dad wants her to observe a new patient: David (Jonathan Rhys Meyers).

As it turns out, her father wanted him to take him on as sort of a challenge. Because Cara doesn’t really believe that Multiple Personality exists and her father not only believes that it exists but he also believes David has it and he is intent on showing this to her daughter.

Multiple Personality Disorder or not, David does seem to have more than one identity and as Cara looks further into the case, she notices that those identities belong to already dead people. To David or Adam or whoever is possessing his body at the moment is pretty certain he is him. How the hell does he know so much about their lives in the first place? And can the murders be connected?

Actually, up until Cara found out what the connection was, the movie was pretty solid and engaging. Then it turned into an aimless nightmare, let go of the science, included a weird -looking old woman (seriously? We still get the same extremely old and ugly woman witch with just as weird “acquaintances” )? And it is shame because this could have been one of the most creative and refreshing movies done on Multiple Personality Disorder…

To me, the second half was a disaster and I am really going to think twice before seeing a Julianne Moore movie. I absolutely hated Blindness, Chloe – though much better than Shelter and Blindness, is average. But this was really bad. And while Jonathan’s acting is really good, good acting can’t save a horrible script. I think Jonathan makes better choices than Moore for the most part but avoid this one and Octane, even if you are a fan.

Obviously all opinions are subjective. So I think that it is safe to suggest you might like this film if you liked Kevin Costner’s The New Daughter or Simon Baker’s Not Forgotten. If you didn’t like those, stay away from this one.

Written by Michael Cooney. Directed by Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein, both are Swedish.

6/10 for the first half, 1/10 for the rest.
