Premise

Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht) is the star attorney at Pearson Hardman. He’s great-looking, very smart, witty, confident, and to top all, he is the best closer in town. He can win in court, but he mostly doesn’t even let cases go that far. Unsurprisingly, he’s about to become a senior partner.

Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams) is a different kind of genius. He has a photographic memory: once he reads something, he doesn’t even forget a comma from it. He’s street smart too: he’d be a great lawyer. Unfortunately, his best friend Trevor (Tom Lipinski) always gets in trouble dealing drugs, and his attempt to help Trevor gets Mike expelled from college, thus killing his dream.

Mike has, however, decided to cash in on his smarts: he enters the bar exam for other people, passes with flying colors and charges them for it. He also begrudgingly agrees to sell drugs for Trevor, one time, because he needs the money for his grandmother, who raised him after his parents died), as she needs looking after in a specialty home. Yep, Mike’s life is complicated.

When Pearson Hardman’s associate-hiring time starts, Harvey unwillingly agrees to hire a fellow Harvard associate. The problem? Harvey wants someone unconventional and exceptional like him. And he meets his match when Mike suspects the guys waiting for him at the hotel are cops and crashes Harvey’s interview. He ends up having to tell Harvey the whole story, impressing him. And when his knowledge of law surpasses Harvey’s, he gets hired, starting one of the most fun bromances on the screen, as well as creating one original conflict.

Of course Mike still has a lot to learn when it comes to practical stuff, and he is smitten by the smart paralegal Rachel (Meghan Markle), who gives him his orientation. They hit it off, but she doesn’t date anyone from work.

So Mike will now need to survive Jessica, annoying junior partner Louis (Rick Hoffman) who’s always jealous of Harvey, other associates, his feelings for Rachel and his anger with Trevor.

As Mike gets to learn how law and grey areas work, Harvey (occasionally) gets to show his more compassionate side, though he’ll never admit it.

And if the office politics might make you not want to be a lawyer, you’d still probably love to work with Donna (Sarah Rafferty), Harvey’s pretty and equally witty secretary.

Why Suits Is So Much Fun

– The exchanges and relationship between Harvey and Mike.

– Not that many courtroom scenes:

I read somewhere that Suits was the show about lawyers with the less amount of court scenes, and I tend to agree. But that gives the show its own vibe, and it’s consistent with the show’s premise as Harvey is “the best closer”. In fact, I was disappointed by Season 3, when we see the inside of a courtroom more often.

– Louis.

Like all brilliant men, Harvey might be tough to work with or for sometimes. It’s especially tough for Louis (Rick Hoffman), since he’s always been in his shadow. It doesn’t help he lacks the looks, the gentler touch when it comes to others and the wit. But he is still one of the best characters of the show, going back and forth between obnoxious and likable. Harvey puts Louis down any chance he gets, and Louis’ weirdness doesn’t help matters. So Louis is always looking for ways to stab Harvey in the back, though he could probably be won over easily with more kindness and compassions. Problem is, it’ s one of Harvey’s favorite hobbies to make fun of him. Whenever Louis is around, hilarity ensues. Good new is, he appears a lot.

Frankly, while I’d hate Louis in real life, I love watching Rick Hoffman playing him to the extreme, and I enjoy his character’s (occasionaly) honorable moments as well as back-stabbing attempts.

– Most movie and TV show references since Supernatural.

Harvey and Mike often exchange movie quotes and make movie/TV show references, so it makes it for a fun watch when your two favorite characters seem just as obsessed about these media as you are.

– Intelligent entertainment with great twists.

Suits is an intelligent, highly entertaining legal drama with more office politics, battles and changing power levels than you’ve seen in a legal drama (comedy.) It has its emotional moments too, and the cast pull off their roles brilliantly.

– Enough romantic tension: not more, not less.

The show doesn’t lack romantic tension and story lines, at least on Mike’s side. Harvey’s private life is colorful, though he’s not the one to be someone’s boyfriend. But worry not, we’re given an satisfactory explanation on why he’s the way he is.

– Jessica.

Go feminism, is all I can say. She’s tough, smart, mostly fair, respectful if you deserve it and a good ally. She makes one hell of an enemy, and would intimidate the hell out of any man. Frankly, I like her even when she’s working against Harvey. I just didn’t like the storyline with her ex husband. Worry not, it was all legal matters really. But he got far too much respect for a… Nope, not gonna tell ya. I ain’t spoiling anything.;)

– Donna.

She is like the Patrick Jane of legal secretaries; only she doesn’t have the baggage and revenge fantasies. She also doesn’t need to hypnotize or trick you to know things. She also has an awesome wardrobe. She’d be right at home working for Cal Lightman, really.

Suits has been renewed for season 5. The show was created by Aaron Korsh.

Please not that this raving review has been mostly for seasons 1 and 2, I’m not that crazy about season 3 – but that’s for another post.

Love and Other Drugs starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway

Love and Other Drugs starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway

1996. Jamie (Jake Gyllenhaal) is an attractive, charming and smart guy who uses all his brain cells to make more sales and have sex with as many women as possible. But when he screws his boss’s wife, he finds himself looking for a new job and with the help of his brother Josh (Josh Gad), he starts working as a drug rep. for Pfizer. With the help of his politically incorrect mentor Bruce (Oliver Platt) and his own skills, he is getting the hang of the job, while sleeping with even more women.

But then Jamie meets Maggie (Anne Hathaway) at a doctor (Hank Azaria)’s office and suddenly Jamie is only having sex with Maggie. And why not? She’s hot, independent and she is offering more booty calls than he can handle. But there are 2 problems: Maggie has Parkinson’s disease and the more time they spend together, the more Jamie gets to like her. But Maggie is resisting any commitment or emotional attachment. Even if Jamie can persuade her to be his girlfriend, can they make it work with her symptoms and fears?

**

The movie has a lot to tell. It has a love story, the launch of Viagra, Jamie’s career, his coming to terms with deeper sides of his personality, very talkative supporting characters who try to steal the scene, Maggie trying to fit in a relationship in her life….

Love and Other Drugs is a film with some original moments and many clichés. Well, telling a mixed genre of comedy/romance/drama is not easy.

But the way director/co-writer Edward Zwick (Legends of the Fall, Glory, The Last Samurai) started telling this story, I thought we were going to a get a Cameron Crowe (Elizabeth Town, Jerry Maguire) or Jason Reitman (Up in the Air) style film – sincere, refreshing & highly entertaining.

A little short of 2 hours, Love and Other Drugs could be edited more. It could also have a better dialogue. And a couple less superficial characters?

Edward Zwick’s film starts in the tradition of Cameron and Jason and then suddenly becomes…well, something different and less impressive. It has a nice soundtrack, though.

Some could argue that the movie tried to be show life as it is – politically incorrect, rude, awkward, competitive, sarcastic….But then I could argue it gives you just as many clichés as your average romantic comedy- just with much more nudity. Come on- the misunderstood, potentially great guy who was previously a womanizer only finding his true self through love. The girl resisting true romance because of her fears? Even the big chasing gesture…

This movie is not bad. It is just not as good as I expected. Its problem? It’s not funny enough and it is not romantic enough. It is just alright. 6.6 on IMDB.

Fun notes:

– Gabriel Macht plays competitive firm’s drug-rep.

–   Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal hooked up on screen before in Brokeback Mountain, although Jake’s true love in the film was Heath Ledger.

– Hank Azaria had a recurring guest role on Friends as Phoebe’s scientist boyfriend.

The Recruit starring Colin Farrell, Al Pacino and Bridget Moynahan

James Clayton (Colin Farrell)  graduates from MIT at the top of his class. He is a whiz about computer programs but Walter Burke (Al Pacino) is about to offer him a whole new opportunity instead of working for Dell or another big company. Walter is a recruiting for CIA and he is certain James would be a great spy. James is indecisive but the fun training, the coolness of the job and hot intern Layla’s (Bridget Moynahan) presence are more than enough to make up his mind. And of course there is the thing that his father might have been an agent as well.

However as days progress, stress climbs up. The training is very severe and not all of the newbies will get to stay. It doesn’t help James that Walter has already spotted his fascination with Layla and the fact that Layla doesn’t seem indifferent either. So he uses this observation to make things tougher on James, as one day he might get to be a fantastic agent.

The problem is James ends up being a pawn in a game where Walter writes the script. Just when he thinks he survived the hard part, Walter assigns him his toughest task: to spy on Layla. She has graduated the program and works for CIA but Walter is certain she is a mole. But how the hell can a former newbie successfully spy on the girl he is mad about, who also got the same extensive spy training as he did?

I love spy/agent films. I love to watch the cat-mouse game, the plot twists and see what great casting has been done this time. I absolutely had a blast watching Tom Cruise’s Knight and Day, and I loved watching Jennifer Garner’s CIA adventures in Alias. Matt Damon performed brilliantly in The Good Shepherd and we all had fun watching him as Jason Bourne. While I am waiting for Angelina’s Salt, I decided to take a look at 2003’s The Recruit. And while I love Al Pacino and starting to become a Colin Farrell fan (he has my respect after all his diversity and the intensity of his roles), I was first attracted to this movie because one of the screenwriters is Kurt Wimmer, the guy who wrote&directed Equilibrium and wrote Law Abiding Citizen, two impressive action/thriller movies with great dramatic undertones. And Kurt didn’t disappoint.

The Recruit is fun and entertaining and full of exciting twists. Sure, you can some of them from a mile away but it is one of those movies where predictability entertains rather than disappoints. Colin Farrell portrays the innocence and “rookiness” of his character perfectly and a really interesting and fun character to watch. Layla keeps us wondering whether she is the bad guy and Gabriel Macht has a small but important role as their classmate/ex cop.

Yes, this is not a life-changing movie. It is not mind-bending. It is just so bloody fun. Rated at 6.5 on IMDB.. Strongly recommended to spy movies lovers, Al Pacino and Colin Farrell fans. Written by Kurt Wimmer, Robert Towne and Mitch Glazer. Directed by Roger Donaldson.

8/10 for the entertainment

7/10 for the overall movie.
