Straw Dogs- Plot Summary

  • The review part has spoilers. For the unspoiled version, please read the preview.

Actress Amy (Kate Bosworth) and her screenwriter husband David Summer (James Marsden) go to her hometown so that he can have a writer’s retreat. It’s a beautiful lake house, and things are supposed to be just productive and romantic.

Unfortunately their peace is short-lived as their roof needs repair and David unknowingly hires Amy’s ex, the former football-star Charlie (Alexander Skarsgård) and his crew. To call them bullying, ignorant and intolerant and hypocritical rednecks would be an understatement. They are quick to hate David for being rich(er), being married to the town hottie, for being a city boy…

To make matters worse, Charlie he is also still obsessed with Amy, and the rest of of the town folk aren’t any smarter or more open-minded and Amy is acting like she is still in Los Angeles…

Review

That’s right. This is your plot. Now, I didn’t see the original Dustin Hoffman version, and I only had the trailer and the plot summary to make my guesses about the film. It seemed like it’d be a decent thriller, and I really like James Marsden. And while it ended up disturbing and thrilling enough, it was disappointing to have two of the stupidest female characters in the history of movies.

Let’s see:

Ideally, Amy wouldn’t have come back without telling her husband what the men can really be like. Ideally, she would have never come back.

So she absolutely had to go? She would have to hire a few men like John Reese (see Person of Interest). Do you think I’m being paranoid? I don’t care how trusting people are in that town- it is a remote house where the cell phones don’t get reception. Non-paranoid people shouldn’t be allowed to live there.

Amy walks around half-naked around perverted and horny men. And when her husband suggests that she could wear a bit more, she flashes to these men. Men who would have been tempted enough if she was wearing sweatpants and the ugliest, baggiest jumper the universe had to offer.

She provokes the men in more ways than one. No, I’m not saying she would have been safe had she been smarter. But as a viewer, her stupidity and provoking really pisses you off. And it is funny how she switched from “We don’t lock our doors around here” to “They killed our cat, let’s sleep with a gun!”

They should have left when the cat was killed.

Yes, of course the husband shouldn’t have ever, ever left her alone in the house. But he certainly didn’t see that they were psychopaths.

As for Janice (Willa Holland), she was even stupider than Amy. She repeatedly went after, tried to seduce and flirted with the town’s big man/little brain Jeremy (Dominic Purcell). Yes, she knew his father (James Woods) would kill the guy if he was ever seen with her. She knew there was an incident where another girl was hurt.  And the funniest thing? She got killed by him- not because he was trying to hurt her, but because he got so scared when he was trying to hide from her father. And her disappearance is what finally caused the ultimate battle between the Summers and the rednecks.

Oh, never mind the Sheriff who tries to calm a group of rednecks – where one guy is a well-built 6’4”, and the other one is a crazy, alcoholic father- by himself. Right. That is of course smart. I don’t care how safe they claim their town to be. Guns+ alcohol+ hot blooded men don’t equal safe, and it is not a one-man job!

*

So yes- the characters act like they have read a book called “How to Be Extremely Stupid”  and lived by it. Yes, the villains were disgusting, and had nothing to redeem them. The victims set a new low for being idiots.

*

The hypocrisy? Oh yes. According to our villain Charlie, it is rude and not nice to walk out on a sermon- but it is completely OK to rape his ex, and then watch while another friend rapes her too.

*

But I don’t rate movies on the intelligence of characters alone.  The movie was nicely-shot, the actors did a good job, and I love a good old fighting-back sequence when the “victim” finally gets rid of the villains one by one.

Rated at 5.6 on IMDB, Straw Dogs is underrated. But I won’t give it a 7 when the victims make the villains’ jobs so much easier. 6.5 from me.  It could have been a bit shorter, and could have repeated some stuff a lot less.

Both A Walk to Remember and Keith feature similarities in their stories, both scored an over 7 rating on IMDB and both were liked by a lot of guys despite being romantic dramas. As a female viewer and a movie lover, I truly enjoyed them both, and frankly I didn’t notice how similar some things were at first.

It had been a while since I saw A Walk to Remember (which was made in 2002). Of course to say that they are the same movie would be a huge overstatement. So below is the comparison of the two movies, with all their similarities and differences:

Please note that this post includes spoilers for both movies. If you haven’t seen both films, or if you mind spoilers, I recommend reading Keith’s plot summary and review-it doesn’t include spoilers.

And for an easier read, these are the actors playing the characters:

A Walk to Remember                               Keith

Mandy Moore plays Jamie                      Jesse McCartney plays Keith

Shane West plays Landon                        Elisabeth Harnois plays Natalie

Similarities:

1)      Both movies tell the love story between a high school girl and a high school boy, and in both movies the characters are seniors. Keith tells the story of Keith (Jesse McCartney) and Natalie while A Walk to Remember makes us root for Landon and Jamie.

2)      In both Keith and A Walk to Remember, one of the lead characters has lost his or her mother. In Keith it is Keith. In A Walk to Remember it is Jamie.

3)      In both films, one of the leading characters has terminal cancer- a fact that doesn’t come out until the couple is already in love. In A Walk to Remember, it is Jamie. In Keith, Keith.

4)      In both films, one of the lead characters is a social outcast while the other is a popular student.

5)      In both movies, the social outcast changes the popular kid’s outlook on life and love.

6)      In both movies, the sick characters die, and we are not shown their death on the screen. We are however shown how the lives of the other characters turned out afterwards.

7)      In both films, the popular doesn’t seem to like or notice the outcast much. Both popular characters also hide the fact that they are hanging out from their friends at first. However once they realize they actually love the other person, they don’t care about anyone’s reaction.

8)      In both movies the outcast doesn’t care about what the rest of the world thinks about them.

9)      In both films, actors are older their characters. Jesse McCartney was 21 when he played the 17-year-old Keith. 17-year-old Nat was played by 29-year-old Elisabeth Harnois.

Shane West was 24 when he was playing Landon.

10)   In both films friendships are tested as the popular friends don’t like the relationship. However when the sickness situation is revealed, both characters are supported by their previously insensitive and superficial friends.

11)   In both films, the healthy character forms a bond with the father of their boyfriend/girlfriend who loses their only child to the sickness.

12)   Both film have one famous actress play the mother of one of the characters.  In Keith, Natalie’s mother is played by Dirty Dancing’s Jennifer Grey and in A Walk to Remember, Daryl (Kill Bill) Hannah plays Landon’s mother.

Differences:

1)      In A Walk to Remember, the girl is the outcast and in Keith it is the boy. A Walk to Remember’s Jamie, however, is religious and she doesn’t do anything other than kissing than Landon. In Keith, Keith and Natalie have sex.

2)      While Keith stays away from pretty much everyone except Natalie, Jamie gets along quite well everyone except the popular kids.

3)      In Keith, Natalie is both popular and a successful student. She is also active at school clubs. In A Walk to Remember, Jamie is the good student who takes part in school plays and clubs. Landon doesn’t care about grades and his future until he falls for Jamie and she makes him realize her potential.

Keith, while smart, wants nothing to do with school work and grades.

4)      Jamie has a big list of items she wants to do in her life, which includes many areas. Keith’s only aim is to hang with Natalie and get her to fall for him.

5)      Jamie doesn’t mention her illness to anyone at school. Keith however has told his teacher (so that he will get what he wants- which is to be partnered with Natalie).

6)      After a brief shock and annoyance at Jamie’s revelation, Landon shows full sport and Jamie apologizes for keeping it a secret. Keith, however, doesn’t reveal his condition to Natalie, and she finds out by total coincidence.

And after she finds out, she wants to be there for him but he doesn’t let her in very easily. He later gives in to Natalie’s persistence and his feelings for her.

7)      While Landon acts like the best boyfriend ever, Keith often acts like a jerk after Natalie reveals how she feels for him.

8)      Before he started dating Jamie, Landon had already broken with his girlfriend (Lauren German, new Hawaii Five 0’s Lori.

In Keith, Natalie keeps dating her boyfriend until she has sex with Keith. She officially breaks up with him when she learns Keith has cancer.

9)      In A Walk to Remember, Landon only hangs out with Jamie because he needs her help with his lines at the school play they are both staying in.

10)   In Keith, Natalie’s parents are happily married with 2 other kids whereas Landon’s parent’ s are divorced and he is deeply angry with his father (David Lee Smith of The Man from Earth)  for starting another family.

11)   Landon becomes a much better student after he starts dating Jamie while Natalie can’t concentrate on her lessons.

12)   If you haven’t read the Nicholas Sparks book’ A Walk to Remember, it is hard to see Jamie’s sickness coming.

With Keith, while we don’t suspect cancer, we are given hints that something is not right as he is seen talking to a guy which seems to be his therapist in the beginning. He also makes it clear that he doesn’t care about the future and has no plans. At one point, Nat finds anti-depressants in his jacket and we’re lead to think that he has mental issues.

13)   A Walk to Remember has a more pop feeling to it, especially after Jamie and Landon start dating. Not to mention lead actress Mandy Moore is a singer in real life and sings some of the songs herself. Keith, as a movie, is more indie and alternative in its music taste.

14)   A Walk to Remember’s director Adam Shankman  (Hairspray, The Wedding Planner) is more known for his comedies and romantic comedies. He also hasn’t participated in the story-writing. A Walk to Remember was adapted from Nicholas Sparks’ best-selling novel by someone else. In Keith, the screenplay is based on Ron Carlson’s story but it was co-adapted by director Todd Kessler.

I’m sure there is more, but point is that these are two different movies with some parallel story points. They are both enjoyable and touching, and I recommend them both. However I find Keith a bit more realistic and less sugar-coded. Keith is currently rated at 7.5 on IMDB and A Walk to Remember at 7.1.

Angel Eyes starring Jim Caviezel and Jennifer Lopez

Catch (Jim Caviezel) is a loner who spends his days wandering about and helping people when he can.

Sharon (Jennifer Lopez) is a single cop who has a problematic relationship with her family.

When Catch saves Sharon’s life during a chase, they connect. Catch is nothing like the guys around her, and she can’t help but being drawn to him. But the mystery about him is annoying her as he doesn’t seem to want to share anything about his own life while he’s more than happy to be involved in hers. But as they don’t want to stop being around each other, Catch makes more of an effort and Sharon ignores the things that don’t make sense. But Catch’s past- a past that he doesn’t remember all that well-eventually catches up with them. Can the relationship survive what he has gone through?

Angel Eyes is a sweet romantic drama with a decent story. Sure, there are a few things about the movie I’d have done differently (such as some scenes, the timeline and mostly the soundtrack).

But it is entirely watchable and likeable, especially if you are a romantic who enjoys emotional stories that haven’t been injected with extra tragedy to be a tear-jerker.

Attention to the word extra: there is a tragedy in the core. This is the first movie I had seen Jim Caviezel in and needless to say he made a good impression. The guy can pull off tall, dark, mysterious and handsome.

You’re strongly recommended to ignore the  genre label on IMDB as it is also featured as a thriller. It’s not. It’s good old fashioned romantic drama directed by Luis Mandoki who directed When a Man Loves a Woman, Trapped, Message in a Bottle, White Palace and more. And frankly, it does deserve a bit more than 5.5 (its imdb rating).

Fun note: Terrence Howard has a supporting role as one of Jennifer Lopez’s cop buddies, and Jeremy Sisto plays her brother.

Keith starring Elisabeth Harnois & Jesse McCartney

Keith Plot Summary- No Spoilers

keith movie poster
Keith starring Elisabeth Harnois & Jesse McCartney. With Jennifer Grey. Image via lh5.ggpht.com

Natalie (Elisabeth Harnois) is the perfect high school student: she has a partial tennis scholarship to Duke, she edits the school newspaper, has a great GPA and doesn’t miss a school party. Her parents (mother played by Jennifer Grey) couldn’t be prouder-yet they are still monitoring her achievements closely just to make sure. At one party, she finally meets the new handsome foreign student Raff (Ignacio Serricchio) and starts dating him. Her whole life is one perfect checklist.

Enter Keith (Jesse McCartney). Keith hates what the popular kids do and he thinks that arranging one’s life according to their future college is just stupid. He is impulsive, fun-loving and likes living his way. So when he becomes Natalie’s lab partner at a chemistry class, their personal differences drive Natalie crazy at first. The last thing she needs is a lazy, stupid lab partner with no goals…

But she quickly realizes that Keith is actually really smart and really interesting. So despite a non-problematic romance with Raff, she can’t resist hanging out as “lab partners” with Keith. But the more she hangs out with him, the more she starts liking him and starts realizing that she doesn’t really know anything about him. And his quirkiness might have completely different foundations than she thought.

As Natalie falls for Keith, she starts questioning her own” goals”- which seem to be more her parents’ than hers- her picture perfect relationship with Raff and whether she should be with Keith. There is only one problem: What the hell is Keith hiding?

Why Keith Is Worth Watching

Keith is sweet, touching and feels real. Just when you think you watched all the high school romances with potential tragedies lurking ahead, a film comes along and tells you the story in a way that moves you, makes you laugh and maybe even cry a bit.

As opposed to the popular girl clichés, neither Nat nor her best friend are cheerleaders. Also the boy that is doomed to lose the girl- the popular guy- is not shallow, or mean in anyway. Sure, he is not the most interesting character, but he is exactly the type of guy you’d want to date at least once in high school. It is also cool that the leading character is not conventionally good-looking, or that it is not the victory of the nice outcast vs. the mean popular kid. If someone acts like a jerk, it is either Keith to Nat, or Nat to Raff.

The two main characters are far from perfect, and they screw up a lot of things. The dialogue and scenes are highly refreshing and entertaining, and it does deserve that 7.5 rating on IMDB. One viewer compared the film to Cameron Crowe (Jerry Maguire, Elizabethtown, Vanilla Sky)’s  style, and I can see that. I love Crowe, and I really loved Todd Kessler’s Keith.

As to Keith’s motives, and when he really started to fall for Nat, the audience is divided. I for one believe that Keith already had a crush on Natalie before they became lab partners, and that he was as crazy about Natalie as she was about him. If anyone wants to see this story in which a girl stupidly screws up her life for a guy who mistreated her, you are missing out on a lot. And saying that Keith had no right to act way is well…over-simplifying things. Unless you went through the exact same thing at 17, you really aren’t the one to judge his actions and reactions.

Highly recommended to all ages and sexes. And it feels a lot more natural than a Nicholas Sparks adaptation. 8/10 from me.

Fun notes:

Fun to see Jennifer Grey as the boring mother whereas she is most famous for being the idealist girl falling for a dancer and standing up to her father because of it in Dirty Dancing.
