Pilot, Characters & Concept

V is for visitors.

New Yorkers feel an earthquake. If only it were that simple. A giant spaceship has parked above their city. Their leader is Anna (Morena Baccarin). She addresses the nation and assures them that they need some stuff from the earth and in exchange, they are willing to share their technology and help improve people’s lives. They look like humans. They seem friendly. Many think they are the coolest and they are in deed as friendly and peaceful as they claim to be.

Protestors have other ideas. They are pretty sure the “V”s are up to something and it can’t be good.

FBI agent Erica Evans (Elizabeth Mitchell) is living with her 17-year-old son Tyler (Logan Huffman)

Ryan (Morris Chestnut)- a successful stockbroker, about to ask his live-in girlfriend, psychotherapist Val (Lourdes Benedicto) to marry him.

Jack  (Joel Gretsch) is a priest who marvels at how many people turned up at his church after the visitors arrived. However when it comes to visitors, he’s a lot more skeptical than his much older colleague.

Chad Decker (Scott Wolf) is a news anchor who wasn’t all that popular until he manages to charm Anna and scores an exclusive interview on the mothership.

The problem is, the protestors have been right along. Vs aren’t friendly. They have a deadly ulterior motive and only a small number of people are aware of it. These people are led by Georgie (David Richmond-Peck). He is trying to persuade Ryan to come back to fight for the cause. Now that Ryan is about to start a family, he is not all that willing. But who will fight for the humans when most are just charmed by the Vs and practically worshipping the ground they walk on?

Erica soon finds out Vs have invaded their lives long before the ships have arrived. She sees the malice, but she is having a hard time trying to persuade her son to stay away from the Vs. He is already infatuated with a beautiful visitor girl named Lisa (Lauren Vandervoort)…

The show got me hooked from the first episode. The characters are all interesting. They all have personal motives, no matter what side they are on. The characters never know who to trust, which exciting and surprising plot twist you will encounter.

It is always complicated. The effects are good, the actors are marvelous at their roles. More importantly, shades of grey exist all over the show. Just like there are Vs among humans with hidden agendas and identities, there are traitors among Vs who want to save themselves and others from Anna’s grip. There is the resistance among Vs, among humans, the alliance Erica, Jack, Ryan and Georgie form. There is Tyler who’s growing apart from her mom and there is Chad Decker (Scott Wolf). He is a nice guy but he is loving all the benefits Anna has provided his career too much. And let’s not forget the political turmoil the aliens have created all over the world…

There is a mini-series of the same name in 1983. I can’t comment how similar or different the two Vs are as I haven’t seen the old one. But take it from someone who loves her suspense, thrillers but is not that much into sci-fi or aliens, this show just rocks. It is a sci-fi show that even non sci-fi lovers can enjoy. Don’t miss out on this treat of a show. 7.7 over on IMDB. 10/10 from me.

UPDATED on March 9, 2011

I wrote the V review in the middle of first season. Now the second season aired the 9th episode of season 2 (Devil in a Blue Dress) yesterday and I am more hooked than ever.

The writing is still great, and the relationship between characters just got more complicated. Anna’s weaknesses as well as advantages are increasing. We still don’t know Hobbes’ (Charles Mesure) back story, and Anna has a very determined rival (Jane Badler) on her ship.

Some of the season 2’s characters aren’t in the show, but obviously Anna, her right-hand Marcus, Joshua, daughter Lisa and all our leading human rebels are intact. I have run out of addictive shows, except for V. So, 1,5 seasons later, I just wanted to say, I am still hooked and I am still giving the show a 10/10.

Fun Notes:

* Elizabeth Mitchell is no stranger to Lost fans as she appeared in over 50 episodes of the show.

* You might remember Scott Wolf from Party of Five, a tv show from the 90s. Scott played one of the 5 siblings who were left to take care of each other when their parents die. Oldest sibling was played by Matthew Fox a.k.a Jack, as Lost fans know him.

Regarding Henry starring Harrison Ford and Annette Bening

Henry Turner (Harrison Ford) is a successful and ambitious lawyer who doesn’t really care much about right or wrong. He is not exactly an affectionate man and although he seems to be getting along OK with his wife Sarah (Annette Bening), he is stern and not really loving towards his 12-year-old daughter Rachel.

One day things change completely when Henry gets shot in the head during a robbery. He doesn’t remember who he is. Moreover, he can’t (remember how to) walk or talk. Sarah does his best to help him out. Henry’s best friend becomes Bradley (Bill Nunn)- the physical therapist who is literally teaching how to get back on his feet. When Henry recovers, his speech and walking go back to normal while he still doesn’t remember who he is. He goes back to live with his family. He tries to figure out who he is and he gets to know more and more about his old self, he doesn’t really like what he finds out. As he reconstructs his life, he is a loving and modest fan. And although his family adores the new Henry, his boss, friends and colleagues aren’t all that thrilled and more complications will get in Henry’s way.

Regarding Henry is a wonderful emotional journey with touching performances from all of the cast, especially Ford, Bening and Mikki Allen who plays the daughter. The story is wonderfully humane. For the first time in my movie-watching years, this is the movie that made me a true admirer for Harrison Ford’s talent as an actor. Sure, he is a great action hero and I was pleasantly surprised by him in Six Days Seven Nights, where he showed more comedic talent. But here Ford shows an entirely different side. His role starts as arrogant, cold, charismatic and confident. He then goes through a bewildered adjusting process where his character gains innocence. Later he is eager to learn and love and makes for a great transition. It is always a pleasure to watch Bening on screen and Mikki Allen is really good as Rachel. It is a film by Mike Nichols who loves directing different genres. Remember his Wolf? Or Closer? The fact that this story is written by J.J Abrams (creator of shows Lost and Alias) may be a surprise for Lost fans. After all, this story has no mystery, suspense or action. It is all about life, feelings, family and love. But for those of you who have seen 1992’s Forever Young (starring Mel Gibson, Elijah Wood and Jamie Lee Curtis) will make perfect sense- as that timeless romance/comedy/sci-fi  as it was also written by J.J. Abrams certainly can create and write great stories, regardless of the genre.

Regarding Henry is a 1991 movie, rated 6.5 on IMDB- voted by over 12.600 people. I will admit that it is not one of the most impressive or original scripts ever written but this doesn’t change the fact that this is one solid and heart-warming film. I think it deserves a 7, at the very least. Oh, obviously, do stay away if you don’t enjoy drama.

Swing Shift starring Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn

Kay Walsh (Goldie Hawn) is happily married to her husband Jack (Ed Harris). When World War II strikes, Jack has to join the navy and Kate is left alone. Kay finds a job; after all almost all plants are need of extra labor after most men go off to war. Women are not made all that welcome by some of the men. Kay tries her best to do her job and makes a new friend called Hazel (Christine Lahti). Her new “leadman” Lucky (Kurt Russell) also is really nice to her. Well, it is more like he is smitten by her. He keeps asking her out and she keeps turning her down. But eventually, she gives into his charm. Along with her friendship with Hazel and Hazel’s romance traffic, her guilt about her own affair and work life, her life gets very busy. And her husband is due home any day…

This is one harmless, sweet movie. It is not memorable. It is by no means bad, but I was misled into thinking that it would be a romantic comedy with few dramatic touches (I am blaming it on IMDB’s genre labels). It has some funny moments. It has some romantic moments. But with all the war background and the relationships….something is missing. Of course watching Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn is never boring. And Kay’s husband is played by Ed Harris. It is weird seeing Ed with hair, I’ll give you that (well, he had more hair in 1984). Academy was more impressed with the Hazel character than I was as she was nominated for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.

5.8 on the IMDB. Sounds just about right. Directed by Jonathan Demme.

Not Forgotten starring Simon Baker

Not Forgotten starring Simon Baker and Paz Vega
Not Forgotten starring Simon Baker and Paz Vega. Well, the name of the movie makes sense but that's pretty much the only thing that does. Image from: http://www.traileraddict.com/

OK. This movie was bad. I mean really bad. I usually start with the plot and then mention what I think but I just couldn’t help myself. On the surface, the premise is quite OK.
Jack Bishop (Simon Baker) is a loving husband and a father who coaches girls’ soccer team where his 11-year-old daughter Toby (Chloe Moretz) also plays. His first wife -Toby’s mom- is dead but Toby seems to be getting alone fine with her stepmother Amaya (Paz Vega). A good marriage, a simple life. There are implications of black magic in the movie but hey, you don’t mind. Maybe there are essential to the plot line and maybe it will all make perfect sense at some point. The simple and happy family life is ruined when Toby is kidnapped. Jack is devastated and so is Amaya. They try anything and everything to find Toby. But as the story unfolds, it will become apparent that no one and nothing is quite what it seems, except Jack’s love for Toby.

I might get into spoilers so read on at your peril:

The pace is slow. But sometimes slow pays off. Not this time. We are thrown weird twists here and there, like Jack actually speaks Spanish when his wife thinks he can’t. Whores in Mexico seem to know who is and they know him by another name. The black magic thing is something…that the writer wants you to suspect that it will relate to the story…It does but it never makes any sense. Jack’s identity as a loving father doesn’t add up. Amaya’s 10 year-old acting is ridiculous. The daughter’s reaction is absolutely ridiculous. The picture in the beginning- the picture of Toby’s mother- does belong to Claire Forlani. And she also has a ridiculous role in the film, just like the rest of the cast.
You wan t more specifics? Please ask me in the comments. I can go into as much detail as you like. I like Simon Baker, I really do. But this movie is off. Whatever genre or pace it was aiming, it is off. I don’t even get what attracted Simon to the script in the first place. There is nothing that’s attractive about the movie. Well, except the one part where Simon tortures and wastes the long-haired bad guy. That was cool. But if you want Simon to go all affectionate, watch Something New. If you want him all smart, watch The Mentalist. This is rated 4.5 on IMDB, voted by over 600 people. And frankly, even 4.5 is way overrated.
