Take the Lead starring Antonio Banderas
Take the Lead starring Antonio Banderas. Inspiring, fun and not-so-clichéd dance movie with Banderas. Definitely worth seeing.

Pierre Dulaine (Antonio Banderas) is a ballroom dance(s) instructor running his own studio in New York. One night, on his way back from another ball, he sees a teenager (named Rock- played by Rob Brown) taking his fury out on a car. When he realizes who the car belongs to (it belongs to the principal of the school the boy goes to), he realizes he might be of some help. The school consists of mostly troubled teens from poor backgrounds and they are not exactly hopeful about their future. The principal (Alfre Woodard) is more than amused at Pierre’s ridiculous idea but she realizes he is her only choice for a teacher to attend her students in detention.

The students – the rejects- are even more amused at the sight of this overly polite, dance-loving volunteer teacher. If they want to dance, they do it to hip hop and they have no interest in ballroom dancing – the stuff they see as the territory of rick, stuck-up white kids.

But Dulaine is more than determined. He slowly intrigues them, and with the help of his pro dance student Morgan (Katya Virshilas), he proves them how sexy and exciting his type of dances can be. He even encourages them to join a dancing competition. However his newly formed bond with the problem students will raise more than a few eyebrows with the principal, the other teachers, parents and his rich students, with the exception of one girl who feels more at home with the rejects. Also the more than chaotic home lives of the kids might interfere with their dancing classes. Can Dulaine manage to fulfill his quest to teach these teenagers to have faith in themselves and future, with the help of dancing?

**

Take the Lead is a wonderful dance movie. It may not reinvent the story of ambitious teacher/problematic students storyline, but it brilliantly combines the ballroom culture with the ghetto and tells a dance story that doesn’t revolve around romance, but faith, self-respect, motivation and concentrates on dance as a weapon at survival. It also has really fun dancing scenes featuring both ballroom dances and the club scenes separately, as well as the wonderful fusion scenes where both dances are combined. My favorite scenes are the ones where Morgan and Pierre dance in the school’s detention room and take the breath of the students and the threesome tango scene where his three students- two boys and a girl- put on one of the sexiest and most fun Tango sequences ever.

There are many reasons to see this film. If you love to dance, any form of dance, see it. If you ever need to restore some faith in the limited opportunities you have, see it. If you like Banderas, this is a must. It is also refreshing to see a dance movie where there is practically no romantic storyline but just sexual chemistry. It is also refreshing to see Banderas in a role where he gets to be the lead without having sex with the female lead and/or taking his clothes off.

6.5 on IMDB. 8/10 from me. Remember, I am addicted to dancing. Freestyle first and all the others second. It is also pretty much as unisex as a dance movie can get.

Pierre Dulaine: You can get what you want.
Rock: No, some people get what they want.
Pierre Dulaine: Those are the people who show up to get it.

**

Student: (on how women keep smiling at Pierre because he is being so courteous) But you didn’t get any phone numbers.

Pierre: I didn’t ask for their numbers.

**

Pierre Dulaine: I understand six languages and I speak five – all with a Spanish accent.

When Eddie sees Pierre for the first time at school, Pierre is wearing a suit and a tie.

Eddie: Yo son, who died?
Pierre Dulaine: Apparently your manners.

**

Pierre Dulaine: To do something, anything, is hard. It’s much easier to blame your father, your mother, the environment, the government, the lack of money, but even if you find a place to assign the blame,it doesn’t make the problems go away.

The Last Time starring Michael Keaton, Brendan Fraser and Amber Valletta
The Last Time starring Michael Keaton, Brendan Fraser and Amber Valletta.

Ted (Michael Keaton) is the best salesman of his company. He is confident as hell, very cocky and has a dirty mouth. He doesn’t tolerate failure or stupidity. His co-workers hate him.

When his boss asks him to take Jaime under his wing, he is less than pleased but his boss is desperate. Jaime has been transferred from Ohio but different rules apply in New York and he needs a mentor.

Jamie (Brendan Fraser) is the exact opposite of Ted – he is not unsure of himself, he is extremely polite and friendly. He is also more than willing to follow Ted. Ted hates every minute of this, until he meets Jaime’s beautiful fiancée Belisa (Amber Valletta). Belisa seems to be very fond of Jaime and  is worried about his performance and him. Ted senses the trouble: he is attracted to Belisa. She is not only pretty but she seems to be having more in common with Ted than she has with Jamie- plus, she’s attracted to him as well. And you can’t really blame her, as Brendan Fraser looks and acts like an incompetent teddy bear for most of the movie. This results in Belisa and Ted having a passionate affair. As Belisa falls for Ted and starts getting cold with Jamie, Jaime starts to lose it and from then on things get some very interesting twists…

The movie is an interesting and thrilling drama (or a dramatic thriller, depends on which parts of the movie you are considering) with absolutely top-notch acting; especially from Michael Keaton. Brendan Fraser and Amber Valletta are also very good. I loved the script too. It is smart, easy to follow yet grabbing and it successfully builds the tension. After all, appearances can be deceptive. Give it a go to see what can be done with a modest budget and good actors.

Written and directed by Michael Caleo, 2006.

Anticipating: Rabbit Hole starring Nicole Kidman, Aaron Eckhart and Dianne Wiest

Rabbit Hole Movie starring Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart
Scene from Rabbit Hole starring Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart. Co-starring Dianne Wiest and Sandra Oh. Image via: 3.bp.blogspot.com

On the surface, Rabbit Hole doesn’t have a story we haven’t seen before. In fact, it is something we saw many, many times: a couple trying to cope with the death of their kid. But what does attract me to Rabbit Hole movie is the actors. The husband and wife are played by Aaron Eckhart and Nicole Kidman. With the exception one disappointment from Aaron Eckheart (Conversations with Other Women was a fairly boring, dialogue-heavy movie) and a couple more disappointments from Nicole Kidman (I mean- what the hell is she thinking with the movie Fur? And I really can’t stand Moulin Rouge), I like watching the works of these two.

Co-starring are Dianne Wiest and Grey’s Anatomy’s Christina- Sandra Oh.

Rabbit Hole is based on an award winning-play. Written for the screen by David Lindsay-Abaire, directed by John Cameron Mitchell. It looks like a good, heart-felt yet fairly depressing movie.

The Social Network starring Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield, Justin Timberlake and Armie Hammer

The Social Network starring Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield, Justin Timberlake and Armie Hammer
The Social Network starring Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield, Justin Timberlake and Armie Hammer. A David Fincher Film.

The Makers and The Actors

The Social Network tells the story of Facebook. When I saw the trailer, I wasn’t all that impressed. I didn’t think watching the movie would be any more fun than reading a well-written non-fiction book about how Facebook started and became this huge phenomenon. But I had an invitation to see the movie, and I was a little intrigued. I mean, David Fincher (Se7en, Fight Club, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button…) was directing it.

When the opening credits rolled, I was even more intrigued. It was co-produced by the Oscar-winner producer Scott Rudin (No Country for Old Men, There Will Be Blood, The Truman Show…). The executive producer was (twice) Oscar-winning actor Kevin Spacey (American Beauty, The Usual Suspects, The Life of David Gale, Pay it Forward, 21…). The music was composed by Trent Reznor- a.k.a Nine Inch Nails, an industrial/electronic rock/metal singer/band. I really like Jesse Eisenberg’s acting (The Squid and The Whale, The Hunting Party). And among all these credentials, there was Justin Timberlake as an actor, in a Fincher movie. Well, as annoyed as I am by him as a singer, he doesn’t bug me much as an actor.

The Plot

Right after the opening scene, we are told most of the story in flashbacks as the present time is split between the two lawsuits Mark is facing. One from former best friend Eduardo and from two other Harvard students he was supposed to do business with. Both lawsuits are currently being handled in meetings with the lawyers.

Harvard undergrad, computer programmer Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg) is a very smart, talkative and arrogant young man with less than impressive social or romantic skills. It is these qualities that get him dumped by his girlfriend Erica (Rooney Mara). So he gets drunk, blogs rudely about her and gets the idea to compare all the university girls he can find the pictures of in the internet, makes into a website called Face Mash and sends it to other male students. His helper is his best friend, Harvard Economics undergrad Eduardo Saverin (Andrew Garfield).

This ends up crashing Harvard’s servers, giving Jesse a bad name academically and well, among girls. But two Harvard students – rich, successful and athletic Winklevoss twins Cameron and Tyler (both played by Armie Hammer) are impressed with what Mark is capable of. They, along with their best friend and business partner Divya (Max Minghella) offer him a gig. They want to create a social network for Harvard students. They have the idea, plans and the means and they need the creative programming of Mark. He accepts, but he already has a bigger idea on his own. A much better enhanced network, better than Friendster and Myspace. He needs the funding of Eduardo, so he offers him a partnership and makes him the CFO. He delays meetings with the Winklevosses and buries himself in making The Facebook (it had a “the” in the beginning)It becomes a huge hit, pissing off the Winklessvoss twins and Divya. They try to agree on an action to take and in the mean time, Eduardo and Mark are enjoying a popularity they never had before. They even enhance the network by integrating a couple of other universities. So Eduardo wants to monetize the popularity but Mark isn’t sure yet. This difference in opinion will only get more complicated as Napster’s inventor Sean Parker (Justin Timberlake) loves the idea and meets them. Mark is fascinated by Sean’s reputation and attitude, while Eduardo hates his guts from the very beginning.

From then on, we see how The Facebook becomes Facebook, becomes bigger with Sean’s connections and eventually ruining the friendship of Eduardo and Mark, as the lawyers of each party try to prove their client has the right to the riches of this network, which has become universal in the process…

The result:

Well, it is pretty outstanding. It is a dialogue-heavy drama, yet the characters and their lines are intruging, interesting and everything happens so fast, you don’t get the chance to get bored even for a second during the movie’s 2 hours. The acting is just right and I have to say even Timberlake makes a decent Sean. It is a drama with its quite quirky funny moments and entertaining events. It is a must-see. While I wouldn’t go as far as to land the movie in IMDB’s top 250 films ever made, I have to say it has to be one of the best true events-based stories ever written and made. It was based on Ben Mezrich’s book The Accidental Billionaires and adapted to the screen by Aaron Sorkin (A Few Good Men, Charlie Wilson’s War, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, The West Wing, The American President, Malice…), another influential name in the movie credits.

If you have anything to do with internet – it doesn’t matter whether you are a social media enthusiast, internet marketer, business owner, entrepreneur or you just like to use Facebook, see this movie. If you are a Fincher fan, see what he can do with this kind of story.

7.8 on IMDB. (updated on January 1st, 2015.)

Favorite Lines:

Gage (lawyer of Winklevosses) : Mr. Zuckerberg, do I have your full attention?
Mark Zuckerberg: [stares out the window] No.
Gage:  Do you think I deserve it?
Mark Zuckerberg: [looks at the lawyer] What?
Gage: Do you think I deserve your full attention?
Mark Zuckerberg: I had to swear an oath before we began this deposition, and I don’t want to perjure myself, so I have a legal obligation to say no.
Gage: Okay – no. You don’t think I deserve your attention.
Mark Zuckerberg: I think if your clients want to sit on my shoulders and call themselves tall, they have the right to give it a try – but there’s no requirement that I enjoy sitting here listening to people lie. You have part of my attention – you have the minimum amount. The rest of my attention is back at the offices of Facebook, where my colleagues and I are doing things that no one in this room, including and especially your clients, are intellectually or creatively capable of doing.
[pauses]
Mark Zuckerberg: Did I adequately answer your condescending question?
