College student Derrick Webb (James Marsden) has it all: money, looks, charm & 2 great friends/roommates –   hard-working Cathy Jones (Lena Headey) & artistic Travis (Norman Reedus). In fact, the only thing Derrick hasn’t managed to “get” so far is Johns.  Jones wants him too but she is just afraid of the aftermath.

This all seem to be interested in the beautiful & filthy rich blonde Naomi (Kate Hudson).  After all, she is known for being against sex, despite being in a relationship with the cute Beau (Joshua Jackson). And Jones heard that Naomi started a rumor about Jones sleeping with their professor – Goodwin (Eric Bogosian).

So when Derrick witnesses Bo and Naomi making out heavily in a party – with Naomi too drunk too tell Beau off, Derrick gets the perfect idea for Goodwin’s class. Why not spread a rumor that Naomi slept with Beau that night and see how well it spreads?

Of course the rumor spreads like crazy. However before the trio can fully enjoy their results, the unexpected happens. The rumors reach Naomi. She was so drunk that night that she doesn’t actually remember what really happened. So she believes that Beau raped her. Beau is arrested. Jones wants to come forward, but Derrick stops her. After all- what if Beau really raped her? It is not like Derrick saw the whole thing….

From then on, events take on amazing twists and turns. And if you are worrying I gave away too much of the plot, don’t. The movie really starts kicking ass right after Beau is arrested. What started as a sexy & intriguing teen college drama turns into an intelligent and even sexier mystery/thriller. No gore. Almost no blood. Practically no effects and no big budget. Just a talented cast, a smart script and really good storytelling.

Pay attention to James Marsden. The cast is good enough but I have to say James steals the show with his wonderfully grey character Derrick.

Written by Gregory Poirier. Directed by Davis Guggenheim.

Fun notes:

* Kate Hudson (she plays Naomi)  is actress Goldie Hawn’s biological daughter. She is very close with her step dad, Goldie Hawn’s long-time partner Kurt Russell.

* Noticed someone familiar among the students? It is none other than Kris Holden-Ried, who you might remember as William Compton from The Tudors, or from the romcom Touch of Pink. Does Kris remind anybody else Chris Martin of Coldplay, or is it just me?

Source Code starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan & Vera Farmiga: Preview – Updated!

Source Code starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan & Vera Farmiga
Source Code starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan & Vera Farmiga. Directed by Duncan Jones - director of 2009's Moon starring Sam Rockwell.

Plot

Soldier Colter Stevens  (Jake Gyllenhaal) is given a unique mission: through the help of latest technology, he will go back a little in time, “become” one of the passengers on the train that got bombed that morning. The downside is he only has 8 minutes to identify the bomber. In charge of the operation is Carol Goodwin (Vera Farmiga).  If they can find out who the bomber is, they can prevent a second attack from happening. Colter gets to try multiple times but each time he has 8 minutes. And things get even more complicated when he starts having feelings to another passenger (Michelle Monaghan). After all, preventing the first attack or saving these passengers isn’t a part of the official mission…

First Impressions * (This post was written before I saw the movie. My review after seeing the m?vie is here.)

So far I only have the trailer to have an idea and I am not that impressed. The 8-minutes premise is intriguing enough but I am not sure about the “romance” bit. I got the feeling our heroic soldier is going to try to save only Michelle Monaghan’s character and frankly, that is a bit extreme. Why not try to save the whole train? And a couple of 8 minutes for an intense connection? I didn’t exactly buy it.

I suppose we will have to wait and see. But it is going to look a little bad if our heroic soldier only attempts to save one life only. What do you think?

A promising note: Source Code was directed by Duncan Jones, who directed & co-wrote the intelligent sci-fi/drama Moon starring Sam Rockwell.

Beastly starring Alex Pettyfer, Vanessa Hudgens, Neil Patrick Harris & Mary-Kate Olsen

Kyle (Alex Pettyfer) is one of the most popular kids at school. How can he not be? He is hot ,rich & superficial.  He is also an arrogant jerk. When he pisses off the wrong girl – Kendra (Mary-Kate Olsen), she casts a spell on him that makes his biggest nightmare come true- she makes him really deformed and ugly, making his soul take over his looks. She gives him a year to find someone to love him the way he is or he will stay like this forever.

So Kyle becomes a recluse, hiding from the world. He only keeps in contact with Will (Neil Patrick Harris), a blind instructor.

When he meets the beautiful and nice Lindy (Vanessa Hudgens) as his new self, he decides to be all that he can be with her. He believes that there is no way she can ever fall for him, but he does his best to make her happy.

Unfortunately, he is running out of time. Will Lindy fall for her before the year is over?

Based on the novel by Alex Flinn, written and directed by Daniel Barnz; Beastly fantasy/romance/drama is coming to the theaters in 2011. I have to say the trailer looks intriguing – it is a modern touch to the Beauty and The Beast story. I am not really big on Vanessa Hudgens but she didn’t annoy me in the trailer

As for Mary-Kate Olsen, it is good to see her work separately from her twin sister Ashley Olsen. I really enjoyed their Full House (1987-1995) when I was younger but they dragged the whole cute twins act for too long – making movies on the theme. Beastly seems like a fine story to enrich Mary-Kate’s roles.

I have always hated arrogance and meanness, regardless of the person’s looks. So it will be fun watching Kyle’s character get some life lessons.

Yes, nothing much will probably come to the table but I did like the effects and the make-up they put on Alex. So yes, I will see this movie.

The Lincoln Lawyer starring Matthew McConaughey, Marisa Tomei & Ryan Phillippe

The Lincoln Lawyer starring Matthew McConaughey, Marisa Tomei & Ryan Phillippe
The Lincoln Lawyer starring Matthew McConaughey, Marisa Tomei & Ryan Phillippe. Based on the novel by Michael Connelly.

Mickey Haller (Matthew McConaughey) is a good litigation attorney whose office is the back of his (Lincoln) car. He has a young daughter with Maggie (Marisa Tomei), whose work environment is pretty conventional.

Matthew’s life changes when he signs on a big client – Louis Roulet (Ryan Phillippe) who is charged with assault. He is claiming that it is all a big set up. Is it really entrapment or he is a psychopath capable of killing women as well as destroying Mickey and his family?

This legal thriller is right up my alley. I am obsessed with legal thrillers, something I owe to John Grisham. In fact while I was watching the trailer, it all felt Grishamesque and which drew me in the first place.  This one is based on Michael Connelly’s book The Lincoln Lawyer.

This loving family member lawyer type is exactly the role I want to see McConaughey in. God knows he played in enough romantic comedies and if he is going to stereotype himself, I’d rather have him in a legal thriller. It was a John Grisham drama/thriller that had made me a Matthew McConaughey fan in the first place. The movie was A Time to Kill, a solid Grisham adaptation co-starring Sandra Bullock, Samuel L. Jackson, Ashley Judd and Kevin Spacey.  I loved the movie, despite having read and loved the book so that has got to say something.

It might be full of clichés but some clichés just work. Add the Grisham atmosphere, the cast (Marisa Tomei is one of my favorite actresses and Ryan Phillippe makes a perfectly unexpected villain with that baby face of his).

Coming to theaters in March. Watch The Trailer here.
