Seriously? Another one? Coming to the theaters in April, we are faced with the 4^th and hopefully the last installment of Wes Craven’s Scream saga.

The first Scream was fun. It was entertaining, a little refreshing and well, thrilling enough. It was 1996 and director Wes Craven and screenwriter Kevin Williamson had created a nice teen-slasher that had a pretty cool cast too: Courteney Cox, David Arquette, Neve Campbell, Skeet Ulrich and Matthew Lillard.

Well, with the exception of Skeet and Matthew, Courteney’s news reporter Gale, David’s Deputy Dewey and then student Sydney made it to Scream 2. Then 3 and finally, to Scream 4.

While I don’t hold a grudge against all sequels as a habit, horror/thrillers usually have a lesser chance of making the audiences happier as opposed to action or comedy flicks. Notice how Scream 1 started with 7.2 on IMDB and Scream 3 is currently at 5.3. I don’t necessarily always agree with the user ratings there, but this sounds fair- if not a little too generous.

But of course when you make a 4^th film, ,it is only a good marketing plan to add more famous people to the cast like Adam Brody, Hayden Panettiere, Emma Roberts, Kristen Bell and Anna Paquin – and I didn’t notice half of them in the trailer.

It wasn’t just Scream that failed with the sequels, by the way. Horror-films mockery

Scary Movie was, despite being a little too crude at times, was hilarious. I barely remember Scary Movie 2 and 3 and I didn’t bother to see 4th.

So back to Scream 4. We’ve another mask-wearing psycho (or maybe more than one) with, a ridiculous motive, hunting after the cast. We will see if Neve Campell will survive. But I hope not because it just might indicate a 5^th film.

I am really not excited about Scream 4. Are you?

* Courteney Cox and David Arquette met in 1996, during the making of the first Scream movie. They got married in 1999 and separated in 2010. So yep, the Scream saga outlasted their relationship.

* Courteney Cox isn’t the only Friends cast member Neve Campbell co-starred in a movie with. She also has a movie with Matthew Perry.

* Kevin Williamson is one of the developers & writers of the popular series The Vampire Diaries.

6 Shows and Their Season Finales: Castle, House, Cougar Town, The Mentalist, Gossip Girl and Grey’s Anatomy

This week saw a lot of season finales for popular shows. No major spoilers.

CASTLE

Richard Castle and Kate Beckett are working together once again on a case. The case is really interesting. It involves secret operatives, deadly games, espionage, hidden motives and a really cool love triangle. You probably know Beckett has been seeing hunky robbery detective Tom Demming and Castle is depressed about it. His daughter will be going away for the summer and so will his mother Martha. Castle has a manuscript to finish and a couple he wants to get away from.

Michael Trucco appears in the last 4 episodes of Castle's 2nd season. I wish he had more episodes. But you can watch

You may not like everything that happens in this episode, romantically speaking.

But as always, the show provides a cool season finale and many more episodes to look forward to.

HOUSE

And the best season finale ever award goes to House!! House has been going on for 6 years and I am just as addicted to show as I was when I first started. Not all episodes are created equal. Some are inevitably more engaging and some of the cases are more unique. But it is OK. House’s (Hugh Laurie) lines and his interactions with other characters and guest stars (patients, etc) is what matters. Some episodes provide more comic relief and some leave us depressed. But it is always good. But if there is an episode to hit you right in the guy and swear you’ll back for the other season is the episode finale. Season 5’s finale was amazing- a great balance between what we wanted to happen and what actually happened. Season 6 us gives us a great case outside the hospital while House multi-tasks with a case at the hospital. And we get all the House-Cuddy confrontations we need. I watched some great finales this season but House’s was the best.

COUGAR TOWN

I really hope this show goes on because its quirkiness and adorably crazy and grumpy and sweet characters, it is a modern comedy that happens to be relevant, funny and interesting all at the same time. Courtney Cox is great and so is the rest of the cast. Andy and Ellie’s baby will really entertain you this time too. It is a nice change for a season finale not to leave the main romance hanging in the air. Jules and Grayson finally hooked up a couple of episodes ago. This episode just has them try to figure out how to tell Bobby…

THE MENTALIST

Obviously, Red John strikes again. Or maybe it is a copycat? Actually, there is both the real thing and the copycat and this makes things much more intriguing. Along with Patrick’s (Simon Baker) first date with Kristina, the case(s), and some really stupid mistakes on Kristina’s part will really keep you glued to the screen. This is one of the most intense episodes ever- Simon Baker is again at the top of his game. And for those of you who have seen it: I have a pretty good guess on who Red John might be. What do you think?

GOSSIP GIRL

OK, Gossip Girl is not an addiction but a guilty curiosity. It is not a show to be watched from beginning to end but rather watch on fast-forward to see what the authors did this time. How much more soap can you add to the opera after all? But this episode might actually the best one yet. Not only I watched more than I usually do but they added a pretty nice cliffhanger to the all the drama and romance and disasters. But please, somebody else make the wardrobe for Blaire. Her clothes are almost often dreadful. And Jenny should put on less make-up. The actress playing her is 16 just like her character. She might age pre-maturely. Just a thought.

GREY’S ANATOMY

Like Gossip Girl, if I watch Grey’s, it is most often on fast-forward. Or I just play in the background when I am doing something else. It wasn’t always like that. I loved this show during season 1. Than Season 2 was even better. Than they got too soapy and killed off one of my favorite characters. But hey, since this post is dedicated to finales, I thought I should check out Grey’s finale. Grey’s writers are good finales. Yes, they are never ever short of drama, complications, conflicts and emotional confrontations. Actually, they just overdo everything. e

Do you remember Dr. Burke? George O’ Malley? Izzie Stevens? Patient Denny Duquette?

But finales add action to the drama. There is suicide or murder or attacks…Guns and accidents go overboard, things get out of hand, some characters die and some survive. But this finale just took the action and tension way up:

Remember the guy whose wife was unplugged from the machine because she was brain-dead? Well, he gets in and kills and shoots more than he had initially planned. Lead or supporting, a lot of characters are endangered, lots of dangerous and risky calls are made and it is safe to say, if this was real life, all the parties involved would need serious therapy.

These are my takes on the finales. What are yours?

P.S. Desperate Housewives also had a pretty good ending to the 6^th season. But I think it had better finales before and did we really need that comeback?

Cougar Town starring Courtney Cox — It was time we got a decent comedy. Yes, it started airing in 2009 and I just discovered it. But hey, trust me- the concept will never go out of fashion. Courtney is just as funny as she was as Monica. And even more gorgeous. Photo from: impawards.com

Courteney Cox is back and Cougar Town makes me want to watch Dirt. Well, most probably the only thing these two have in common is Courteney Cox and that’s OK.

Cougar Town basically rocks. It is not exactly original but it is not originality that makes it work. I mean I am guessing you have seen the hot 40-year-old single mother with a teenage son, trying to cope in the world? The cute but reckless and immature ex husband? The hot single male neighbor dating younger chicks only to later develop a crush on our hot single mom? The edgy, Grinchy best friend who could have actually got along with House?

You did see it before. But most probably not all together, set in Florida, along with a younger, air-headed blonde employee and now with this much chemistry between the characters. And by chemistry, I mean comedic timing.

The premise:

Jules Cobb (Courteney Cox) is 40, newly divorced and not very hopeful about her future love life. She is surrounded by younger women dating older men or older women dating younger men. Not that men her own age seem promising: Her next door neighbor Grayson (Josh Hopkins)- also newly divorced- has made a habit of dating college girls. She is also busy raising her teenage son Travis (Dan Byrd), supporting ex-husband Bobby (Brian Van Holt), trying to keep her two best friends- neighbor Ellie (Christa Miller) and employee Laurie (Busy Philips) from killing each other. But Laurie has other plans. Just because Jules didn’t spend much time partying and dating before, doesn’t mean she can’t start now.

So Jules throws her private life into the equation: mostly gorgeous younger men.

But maybe neither her ex nor Grayson aren’t as shallow as they seem….

The funniness level:

The pilot is by far one of the funniest pilots I have ever seen. The show doesn’t really care about men’s feelings, let me tell you. Although, I think men will like Grayson, Bobby and some men will find familiar territory with the family man/Ellie’s husband Andy (Ian Gomez).

Although the show is no way verbally or visually as explicit as Sex and The City (mind you, I love Sex and The City), it shows women out there. With all the beauty issues, family obligations, careers, relationships and sexual/romantic needs, what women think and feel are openly explored:

Laurie doesn’t analyze relationships as well or often as she should and ends up in the beds of wrong men.
Jules’ colleague Barb is like SATC’s Samantha a decade and some plastic surgeries later.
Ellie has a hilarious way of showing married life sex.
And Jules…well, Jules even has to teach one of her boyfriends how to kiss. And women are all familiar with the “too much tongue” issue that most men seem to be going through.

Women will have fun. And men will have fun. But I suspect women will laugh a little more. You will not be laughing out loud all the time, but you will be entertained. And it is no sitcom. So no laughter effects and no tiny little set. Oh, and a word for the hopeless rock addicts like me: Bobby has a great rocknroll taste in music.
