It Could Happen to You starring Nicolas Cage, Bridget Fonda, Rosie Perez and Stanley Tucci
It Could Happen to You starring Nicolas Cage and Bridget Fonda. Lovely romantic comedy from 1994. Image via moviesoftheday.com

Charlie (Nicolas Cage) is a really nice guy and a decent cop. He is honest, good with people and he definitely doesn’t mind living in Queens, New York. Unfortunately, he is married to his high school sweetheart Muriel (Rosie Perez), who couldn’t have been more different. She is a hairdresser who believes she is destined to have a much better life and a husband who makes more money. She doesn’t want kids (at least not on Charlie’s salary) and she is dying to get out of Queens. That’s why she encourages Charlie to buy a lottery ticket.

Yvonne (Bridget Fonda) is having the worst year of her life. Her actor wannabe husband (Stanley Tucci) has left her broke. So broke in fact that, she can’t even afford a divorce. To top it all, he has maxed out her credit cards and the court declared bankrupt.

It is on this day that Charlie and his partner Bo (Wendell Pierce) walk into the diner she waiting tables at. Charlie realizes that he only has enough money for the bill and not the tip, so he tells Yvonne that he has bought a lottery ticket. If he wins, he will share half of the money with her. If he doesn’t, he will come back the next day with her tip. With her luck in life, she is skeptical that Charlie will come back at all.

But Charlie’s ticket wins a total 4 million dollars. He is shocked and Muriel is over the moon. Being the decent man he is, he goes back to the diner and tells Yvonne to choose either her tip or half the lottery money. Yvonne chooses option number two and against his wife’s wild objections, he shares the money with Yvonne.

He and Yvonne become good friends – who are really attracted to each other. But 4 millions is a lot of money and Muriel won’t let go without a fight. And of course 2 million dollars suddenly make Yvonne the target of her husband…

**

It could happen to you is a very warm-hearted, sweetheart of a comedy that is like a modern day fairy tale. Charlie is too nice to be true – Muriel is pretty much like the evil witch and Yvonne fits the damsel in distress model. The story is too hopeful and it sounds too good even to the romantic/dreamers like me.  But let’s be honest. What are the odds of your hitting the jackpot? And even you do win, would you really share it with a stranger who you made a promise to on a whim?

But despite its fairy-tale like qualities, this is a really fun movie. Made in 1994, it is the first movie I ever watched Nic Cage in – and the movie that made me a fan. Going back to this movie, I realize once more what a good actor he is. Watching Charlie, you couldn’t imagine Nic could ever be a villain or a whacky character or a depressed alcoholic or an obsessive compulsive conman…

Yet he pulls it off. Watch it if you can suspend your skepticism. And you will get a large smile on your face.

One bad thing about the movie is Rosie Perez’ character. I know she’s supposed to be annoying but the accent and the tone of voice make me cringe every time.

Will and Grace starring Debra Messing, Eric McCormack, Sean Hayes and Megan Mullally

Will and Grace starring Eric McCormack, Eric McCormack, Sean Hayes and Megan Mullaly

Characters

Will Truman (Eric McCormack) is a handsome, young and gay lawyer with a nice apartment in New York City. He is also extremely organized and controlling. It is probably these two traits that ended his 7-year-relationship with Michael.

Grace Adler (Debra Messing) is a beautiful, young and heterosexual interior designer with her own little firm. She is the relaxed and messy one. Will and Grace have been best friends since college.

Jack (Sean Hayes) is one of Will’s oldest& best friends and he doesn’t like Grace that much. Jack thinks he is the star wherever he goes and whatever he does. Unfortunately his resume is pretty unimpressive and he usually lives off Will. He is the ultimate drama queen and as Will puts it, Jack is so gay that “even the dead know that he is gay”.

Karen Walker (Megan Mullally) is Grace’s assistant although she rarely seems to do much work at all. She is married to a very rich and very fat man (and yes, that will come up all the time) named Stan and she only works for Grace because…well, no one really knows why. She is also very fond of shopping, drinking and pill-popping as much as criticizing what Grace wears and does to her hair. She later makes a bizarre pair with Jack.

The show later introduces Rosario (Shelley Morrison) – Karen’s part-maid/part-servant and part- buddy.

Summary for the First 2 Episodes

When Grace’s live-in boyfriend asks her to marry him, Will is more than disappointed. He thinks Grace should be with someone much more passionate. Actually, Will and Grace are the real soul mates and if Will hadn’t been gay, they would probably have been happily married with kids by now. Will’s disapproval annoys Grace but she realizes that he is right.

So she moves in with him, which turns out to be a real challenge. Because an interior designer and a gay control freak doesn’t equal a match made in heaven for living together. But they love each other to bits and they find a way to survive.

The show went on for 8 seasons with countless hilarious episodes. I hadn’t really liked Jack and Karen at first but then they grew on me too and I became a regular viewer for this show. There have been many priceless moments, such as Grace’s burst water bra and Will’s futile efforts to keep the water in, Jack stalking and later hanging out with Kevin Bacon (Kevin Bacon guest-starred himself), Jack not believing the actual Cher was Cher and so forth…

This sitcom is probably Friends’ only rival in how many celebrities guest-starred on the show. The list includes Alec Baldwin, Andy Garcia, Madonna, Cher, Jennifer Lopez, Kevin Bacon, Michael Douglas, Julian McMahon, Harry Connick Jr. (Grace’s love interest), Matt Damon, Parker Posey, Minnie Driver, Blythe Danner (Gwyneth Paltrow’s real life mother guest-starred as Will’s mother), Woody Harrelson, Gregory Hines, Jeff Goldblum, John Cleese, Taye Diggs, Edward Burns and many more.

It may not suit your sense of humor but try to give it a shot for at least a couple of episodes. It is just too entertaining to miss.

Some Fun Will and Grace Quotes:

Grace: (on Karen’s babysitting potential) Look, Karen, I’m sorry, but taking care of children is a huge responsibility. It’s more “Tickle Me, Elmo” and less… “Let’s fill Elmo up with drugs and smuggle him across the border.

**

Grace: [on Will’s confession about being gay] That’s not a compliment! A compliment is “You’re sexy. You turn me on”! Not “One look at you and I know I’m queer”!

**

Grace: [on Will’s confession about being gay] How could I not have known? He was Boy George for Halloween, he has a diffuser on his hairdryer, and he’s prettier than me.

**

Karen: It’s not something you can just run away from like a hotel bill or a crying baby.

**

Jack: You’re caring and loving…
Will: You’re just saying that to make me feel better.
Jack: No I’m not. I mean, what would I get out of that?

Spread starring Ashton Kutcher, Anne Heche and Margarita Levieva

Spread starring Ashton Kutcher, Anne Heche and Margarita Levieva
Spread starring Ashton Kutcher, Anne Heche and Margarita Levieva. 2009.

Nikki (Ashton Kutcher) is a handsome young man who came to Los Angeles to live the good life. And being aware of his looks, he has decided that the best way to do that is to seduce (older) wealthy women, gain their trust and well…live off them. His recent catch is Samantha (Anne Heche) an attractive woman who is a little older and has a fabulous house, complete with a swimming pool. Nikki soon starts staying at her place, driving her car and using her credit cards. And they have a lot of sex. Of course this  is not enough to stop Nikki from having sex with younger, sexy girls – at Samantha’s place. Samantha is pissed to find out, but their arrangement is far too comfortable for her to end it.

So Nikki keeps at his usual ways until he meets the young, pretty and fiery waitress Heather (Margarita Levieva). He does his best to bed her and when he finally manages, he realizes that she is just his female version. She has come to L.A. to live the good life and she is dating wealthy men to get it. Things however get a little complicated when Nikki has to start over and falls in love with Heather. There is no doubt that they are perfect for each other but who’s going to support them?

Spread, despite the comedy label on IMDB, is more like a drama with some entertaining moments and striking one-liners. Ashton Kutcher fits the part and the cast are fine. There is even Sebastian Stan in a supporting role as Nikki’s friend, who you might remember as Carter Brazen if you are watching Gossip Girl. And California is as gorgeous as always.

But is the movie worth watching? I don’t think so. Would I watch it if it didn’t take place in California? No. Would I watch it if Ashton Kutcher wasn’t in it? I really doubt it. And the fact is, I did use the fast forward button a couple of times, Ashton’s scenes included. There is not one likeable leading character, there are far too many sex scenes (more than necessary to prove the point) and well, who really cares about a womanizer who basically acts like a gigolo, falls in love with a female gold-digger and decides he wants to go straight? It is not funny enough to be a decent comedy and it doesn’t work as a drama. But I really don’t think it is director David Mackenzie’s fault. He shot pretty much exactly how any other director would have shot this story. Unfortunately, it is not really a story worth telling.

Now, this movie still can be recommended if you like your stories bittersweet, care about deeply flawed and superficial characters and are a hard-core Ashton Kutcher fan. It also helps if you want something of a soft porn. 6.0 on IMDB.

Killers starring Ashton Kutcher, Katherine Heigl and Tom Selleck

Killers starring Ashton Kutcher, Katherine Heigl, Tom Selleck and Catherine O'Hara
Killers starring Ashton Kutcher, Katherine Heigl, Tom Selleck and Catherine O'Hara. Directed by The Ugly Truth director Robert Luketic. 2010.

Jen Kornfeldt (Katherine Heigl) arrives in Nice, France to have a vacation with her parents (Tom Selleck and Catherine O’Hara).

Spy Spencer Aimes (Ashton Kutcher) is in Nice, staying at the same hotel and handling his deadly missions.

When the two meet, sparks fly and Spencer decides that he no longer wants to be spy. He wants a steady, normal life with Jen. So he quits. Of course Jen has no idea about Spencer’s background, she just thinks he is some sort of consultant. So Spencer quits and starts a whole new domestic life with Jen, and becomes accepted by her family.

Three years later, they are married and having the perfectly ordinary suburban life. Jen is working with internet security and Spencer is running his own firm. However, this comfortable existence is threatened when Spencer’s old boss tells him that he either finishes one last assignment or the “assignment” will finish him. Spencer is unwilling; however he is left with no choice when he realizes that his safe environment is not safe at all. He will have to confess his past, protect his wife and try save his marriage at the same time.

**

Killers is a romantic action/comedy. It is beautiful to look at and entertaining to watch, as long as you don’t try to get into the criticism mode too much. Even the smartest action movies are full of unintentional plot holes and being a romantic comedy first and an action comedy second, Killers does have quite a few. Another problem the movie has, it does fail to integrate all these three genres seamlessly. While Tom Cruise’s Knight and Day manages to be funny, romantic, exciting and sexy pretty much all the time, Killers starts as a fun romance, get a bit of a comedy, does romance again and by the time the action starts, the movie has already reached the middle. While it is not boring, knowing it is supposed to have action makes you a little impatient for the fast parts to start. And by the time the action is over, you think the movie should be in the middle, and not towards the end. So it does feel like two different movies at times.

So just treat Killers as the fluff, romantic comedy with action bits that it is, rather than an action comedy with romantic bits and you might have a good time. Katherine Heigl is OK, although I do think she is better at drama than comedy. Ashton Kutcher is s at home in a comedy as usual and Tom Selleck is priceless as always.

Fun note for Friends fans: Did the bit about the moustache remind you about Chandler and Richard? If it didn’t or if you haven’t seen that episode of Friends, it is in season 2, Episode 20. Watch that episode and have a hilarious déjà vu. Also the name of Jen’s ex is Richard, which is the name of the character Tom Selleck played in Friends.

Directed by Robert Luketic, the director of The Ugly Truth and 21.

Favorite Lines:

Jen: Are you going to kill me too?

Spencer: If I was going to kill you, I’d shoot you back in the house. That sounded weird.

**

Jen (on how many men Spencer killed): How many people, Spencer?

Spencer: Four.teen. (pointing to the one he just killed): 15.

Jen: Is 15 your real number? Or is it like when you ask a girl how many guys she slept with and  you have to double it times 10 (Spencer gives her a look). I didn’t do that.
