Broken Arrow starring John Travolta, Christian Slater and Samantha Mathis
Broken Arrow starring John Travolta, Christian Slater and Samantha Mathis. Directed by John Woo, 1996. Remember, John Woo movies are about the fun, not the logic!

Captain Riley Hale (Christian Slater) and Major Deakins (John Travolta) are boxing buddies and co-pilots in the US military.Deakin’s true colors are revealed as the two are on flying two nuclear weapons to their destination. Deakin attacks Riley, sends him off in his parachute and releases the weapons.

His team is waiting for him, with a trucks, a helicopter and the financer (Bob Gunton) of the operations nearby. He has already recruited some officers from the army, so eliminating fellow soldiers won’t be that big of a problem.

However when Riley lands on a desert-like park and runs into the park ranger Terry (Samantha Mathis), an unplanned partnership is born. Together, they survive the men Deakins sends after them and begin to follow the trucks. From then on, it turns into a boxing match of intelligence between Riley and Deakin. Deakin always seems to be one step ahead, but he just might be underestimating both Riley and Terry. Can these two stop Deakin and safely get the nuclear weapons back? Because if the government refuses to pay the $250,000,000 Riley will be asking, he is just crazy enough to activiate the weapons and casualties be damned…

Broken Arrow is one of my favorite action movie ever. It is fast, entertaining and really fun- just like you expect John Woo (Face/Off, Mission Impossible 2) movies to be. It actually breaks my heart that it is only 5.8 on IMDB. Maybe my expectations are low but I just love to watch what crazy stunts John Woo will make his actors pull and frankly, I also love to have a crazy villain in the form of John Travolta. I also like the fact that the chemistry between Christian Slater’s and Samantha Mathis’ characters at just that- chemistry, so that we don’t get an unrealistic romance forced on the audience.

I also like the side characters and note that there is also Delroy Lindo in the cast, as well as Kurtwood Smith (Red Forman – the strict dad from That ‘70s show) and Raymond Cruz (Det. Sanchez from The Closer) in a very small role.

Written by Graham Yost and directed by John Woo.

Favorite Quote:

(Secretary Baird explains that Broken Arrow is the military term given to the situation when a nu?clear weapon is lost).

Giles Prentice: I don’t know what’s scarier, losing nuclear weapons, or that it happens so often there’s actually a term for it.

Mindhunters starring Christian Slater, Val Kilmer, Jonny Lee Miller, LL Cool J, Patricia Velasquez, Clifton Collins Jr., Kathryn Morris, Will Kemp and Eion Bailey
Mindhunters starring Christian Slater, Val Kilmer, Jonny Lee Miller, LL Cool J, Patricia Velasquez, Clifton Collins Jr., Kathryn Morris, Will Kemp and Eion Bailey. Not logical but so much fun.

A young and unisex group of 7 F.B.I agents (Vince, Rafe, Lucas, J.D, Bobby , Sara and Nicole) in training to be become Profilers, are in a demanding training program run by ex-field operative Harris (Val Kilmer). Harris’ training challenges are realistic and dark and none of the students like him much. Their feelings for him don’t improve when the final test involves these trainees to spend time in an isolated island, without weapons, trying to solve a simulated case of a serial killer, nicknamed the Puppeteer. The team is led by J.D. (Christian Slater) . This time their team has one outsider,  Gabe( LL Cool J), a man whose exact mission and credentials are not that clear. They just know that he is there to observe them.

They wake up the next day to face the challenges Harris prepared for them.  The ones who fail this final test will not make it as Profilers. However  early in the morning, the “simulation” turns into reality when one of them gets murdered. After that point, they will get warnings of time that will let them know when the next victim is due. Who the hell is the killer? Someone else on the island? Or one of them? Or has Harris gone mad?

Mindhunters is a very entertaining thriller about profilers-to-be, being hunted down by one serial killer on an isolated island. The fact that their instructor put them there, that they don’t really have contact with the outside world and the concept of one serial killer vs. FBI trainees as victims sets some original standards. Sure, it is a slasher (not a very gory one, though) to a degree, but it does have some refereshing elements. And it has a pretty good cast with Christian Slater, Val Kilmer, Jonny Lee Miller, LL Cool J, Patricia Velasquez, Clifton Collins Jr., Kathryn Morris (crime TV series Cold Case’s leading actress), Will Kemp and Eion Bailey.

This movie may not be many things: It is not exactly logical, rational or maybe even possible. But the good thing, it is also very entertaining and interesting. The ending is not very satisfactory but still it is not bad enough to spoil the overall fun. It is not a horror film but a decent thriller. But it does have some unpleasant killing scenes so if you don’t have the heart for some minor blood shed and murder scenes, you might want to stay away.

And a note for Val Kilmer and Christian Slater fans: I’ve good news and bad news. Bad news is, they don’t have that many scenes. The other actors share the leading parts. Good news, it doesn’t matter that much becasue the movie is fun enough without them too. Still, wouldn’t hurt to see them more.

Written by Wayne Kramer  and  Kevin Brodbin, directed by Renny Harlin (Deep Blue Sea, Cliffhanger, Die Hard 2). 6.2 on IMDB. It’s not remarkable but definitely fun. From 2004.

Job Security? What Job Security?

Does job security really come with full-time jobs? Is it a myth for freelancers? Or is it a myth for everyone?

Absolute job security is a myth. I was originally going to write about freelancing and the perception of security that came with full-time but then I realized there is no absolute job security.

One story of being fired:

One of my friends is working as a  sales rep. at a firm. Recently, one of her co-workers got fired. She hated the girl so she is not exactly crying about it. But here’s why the girl got fired: The managers found out that she went to job interviews during work hours. Something that should be frowned upon? Yes. Something that should get you fired? I am not so sure. Depends on whose viewpoint you are considering.

If you are the employer, you would be pissed. You’d be right to be. But then again, the work starts at 9 and doesn’t end before  6.30, and that is the earliest they can leave the firm.  So if you really wanted another job, how would you be able to secure interviews after that? You couldn’t. It may look like you are betraying your boss’s trust, but then again, who doesn’t spend at least a fraction of their office time looking for distractions or other job opportunites online?

My friend freaked out because she did that too. In fact, the firm is small and the only people who haven’t been going to interviews were the managers. Job loyalty? You bet ya. They also happen to be the owners. Luckily, they didn’t take the fired girl’s word for granted and try to investigate everyone else. Maybe they really despised the girl. Hey, she had the reputation for being a difficulty bitch.

We can debate about whether she should have been warned or that they were right about letting her go. But hey, the issue here is that she wasn’t freelancing.

Another story of being fired:

Christian Slater

Remember Christian Slater? Well, there is a chance you heard of him or saw a movie with him in it if you are slightly into movies. He has been in  Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, Heathers, Untamed Heart, Bed of Roses, Broken Arrow, True Romance, Windtalkers, Basil…

Well, he has quite a CV. You can always check out my Christian Slater post if you want more info on the guy. The point is, he is a fairly well-known actor with an impressive resume. But before I could check out his TV show My Own Worst Enemy,  it was cancelled. Of course this didn’t stop me from seeing it. But then Christian was back in another TV show called The Forgotten. Great show, except it seems like it won’t see a 2nd season.  So you might be a famous actor who is hardly ever out of work, but you still depend on the “boss”-the boss being the network executives. Surely, Christian will survive. But it doesn’t change the fact that his “job” was cancelled.

The Moral of the stories:

Life is full of surprises. Your personality or your CV doesn’t guarantee security. If they want to fire you, they will fire you. If there are monetary obligations, they will pay that and then fire you.

No, I am not trying to bring you down. But we must be realistic. We can’t blindly assume our job is at risk or totally safe. We need a back-up plan. We need to be prepared. How? Networking. By getting well with our bosses. Not pissing off the ex-boss, even if we hate them. By never isolating yourself from the industry. By never letting your job to define you. If you are writer, sure- let that define you. It is a craft. Just don’t take your bosses or your jobs for granted. But while being prepared, obviously don’t go over the board like the first girl. That might also end up in you getting sacked.

The Deal with Christian Slater: Christian Slater Tribute and The Deal Movie Review

Christian, growiing up nicely
Christian Slater is growing up nicely,
Christian, 90s
Christian, 90s

I’m so living in the 90s when it comes to movies. I believe that’s when most of the great movies have been made. Feel free to disagree but for me that was a time when movies were at their best, especially when it came to entertainment; whatever the genre. That was also an era when I had many actors to follow the filmographies of. Christian Slater was denifinitely one  of them. His name still draws me to the movie. I know I can trust him to make a good one. I know I will have fun.

Yes, I believe him to be cute. But we are not talking about hot, hot, hot. We are talking about a sort of unique, maybe quirky but totally appealing attractiveness. He carries on anger and angst very well, just as well as he plays the bad boy/bad guy. When he does get to play romantic, we girls feel lucky. He has that innocent, boyish charm- and he can be sexy at the same time. It is a dangerous and irresistable combination. Have you seen “Untamed Heart” ?

Untamed Heart (1993) with Marisa Tomei
Untamed Heart (1993) with Marisa Tomei

He skillfully plays a clueless, highly sensitive and an unintentionally reclusive young guy; who is in love with his co-worker (Marisa Tomei).

Bed of Roses (1996) with Mary Stuart Masterson
Bed of Roses (1996) with Mary Stuart Masterson

Or “Bed of Roses” ? Too romantic for your taste? But, hey- Christian has the ability to make you forget about your cynical side.

Christian Slater against Travolta (1996)
Christian Slater against John Travolta (1996)

He is not a big guy, but he is  nicely built and he sure can carry an action film. I absolutely love the John Woo flick  “Broken Arrow”. Christian versus a psychotic John Travolta… What a team. Good vs. Evil, nuclear weapons…The works.

I don’t want to forget Basil, where he is the guy of my nightmares. Murder in the First is an excellent legal thriller/drama where he plays the dedicated lawyer of the abused Kevin Bacon…The list goes on so let’s come to this century, shall we?

I still watch the movie if  Christian is  in it.  Yesterday I saw the 2005 ‘s :   “The Deal”.

thedeal2005
The Deal starring Christian Slater and Selma Blair

A thriller about big companies, oil deals and how far people will go to get what they want. Strategies, lies and deceptions – nicely written, beautifully acted: right up my alley.

The Deal with Slater is that he can play the lead and be in a supporting role. He is in his 3rd decade of movies. He doesn’t mind getting ugly for a role  (please check out “He was a quiet man” and you will know what I mean).

He can pull off any genre. But I guess because he is a bad boy in real life (I forget how many times he got arrested), when he plays a romantic role; he is at his best. Add some action to the mix. We have a talented and good-looking actor who can kick ass.

All I can say to Chris is : Cheers and keep up the good work…
