Eddie (Ben Stiller) has reached 40 and single. Unfortunately for him, his happily married (=wife-obliging) best friend Mac (Rob Corddry) thinks he will end of alone and miserable and his father Doc (Jerry Stiller, the real life father of actor Ben Stiller) is not happy with how many women his son is sleeping with. In  between all the trouble they are getting him and his ex-fiancé getting married, he happens to meet a gorgeous blonde by chance. Her name is Lila (Malin Akerman), she is sweet, down-to-earth and seems like the perfect woman.

Eddie ends up marrying Lila. It is not like he could do any better. But during their honeymoon, he starts noticing that Lila is irritable, unstable and well, is a little nuts. It is during the honeymoon that Eddie meets a beautiful brunette by the name of Miranda (Michelle Monaghan). She is there for a family vacation. She is fun, easy-going and totally sane. And she seems like she is into him. Of course she doesn’t know that Eddie is married. So Eddie’s “romantic” holiday is spent between handling Lila and trying to spend as much time as he can with Miranda. But Miranda is bound to find out any time…

The Heartbreak Kid is not your typical romantic comedy. First of all, it is not exactly romantic enough to be even called a romcom. It is a comedy with some romantic moments attached and the only reason romantic scenes are only there to build the ground for more comedy. But you can’t exactly label this one as a sole comedy because well…While it is a funny movie, it is not hilarious all the time. It is fun  and certainly easy to watch but you may not exactly pull stomach muscles from laughing. It is rightfully R-rated. After all, Lila is playing a character who knows a lot of weird sex positions but she doesn’t know what missionary means… And then there is Edie’s old dad who talks about p**** a lot. Yep, he uses the exact word.

This movie is directed by the Farrelly Brothers; Bobby and Peter Farrelly and co-written by them. The script is based on the 1972’s The Heartbreak Kid.

You are probably familiar with at least some of the work of the brothers: “There is something about Mary”,”Me, myself and Irene”, Stuck on You, Fever Pitch, Shallow Hal…

The Heartbreak Kid is an R-rated, sort of romcom with the sensibility of Me, myself and Irene. But I have to say, I loved the ending.

5.9 on IMDB. A 6 from me.

Buy this film on Amazon.

3 Romantic Roles of Edward Norton

Edward Norton

Yes, we know he can play a psycho, a gambler, a man who is going to jail the very next day or he can just star in the cult film Fight Club. It is so easy to get used to this diversity and we are not exactly surprised when he plays the nice, romantic fellow occasionally. But of course being Edward Norton, even his romantic parts are very different from each other. So here is a list of three (very) good movies and links to its reviews:

* Keeping The Faith

Keeping the Faith with Edward Norton, Jenna Elfman and Ben Stiller
Keeping the Faith with Edward Norton, Jenna Elfman and Ben Stiller. This rabbi (Stiller) and priest (Norton) would look more at home at a rocknroll concert.

Edward Norton has directed this lovely comedy where a rabbi and a priest reunite with their old childhood friend (Elfman) and eventually both fall in love with her. Both these guys are very popular, modern and fun. But of course Norton’s character Brian Finn isn’t supposed to date. Or flirt. Or fall in love. Oops…

You can read the review below:

The Painted Veil

The Painted Veil with Edward Norton and Naomi Watts
The Painted Veil with Edward Norton and Naomi Watts

It is sad, romantic, touching, powerful and poetic. It is well-done in every way. Not your typical love affair either. An unfaithful wife (Watts) is forced by her doctor husband (Norton) to go the most dangerous place (1920s, political chaos- combined with a cholera epidemic) in China. But maybe they were both too quick to judge and despise each other? Produced by Norton and Watts. A must-see. To find out more about the film (no spoilers there either):

The Illusionist

The Illusionist with Edward Norton and Jessica Biel
Wait till you see the cool magic trick Norton's Eisenheim does with Biel's Sophie. Talk about having interesting encounter with your childhood sweetheart!

The Illusionist takes you to a magical Vienna with fine cast: Edward Norton, Jessica Biel, Paul Giamatti and Rufus Sewell.Romantic, mystical, mysterious and lovely. For the review:

Reality Bites starring Ethan Hawke, Winona Ryder and Ben Stiller

Reality Bites starring Ben Stiller, Winona Ryder and Ethan Hawke

Favorite Line (not just from this movie, but one of my favorite movie lines ever):

Lelaina (Winona Ryder): I was really going to be somebody by the time I was 23.
Troy (Ethan Hawke): Honey, all you have to be by the time you’re 23 is yourself.

Reality Bites is a sincere and funny movie about what really awaits us after college. No matter how well we do at the university or how enthusiastic we are about starting out our lives, things almost never quite turn out the way we expect them to be. The movie is from 1994, written by Helen Childress and Ben Stiller.

Lelaina (Winona Ryder) is the class valedictorian. She hangs out with her best friends from college:Vickie (Janeane Garofalo), Sammy (Steve Zahn) and Troy (Ethan Hawke).  Each has their own unique set of problems. Sammy has to deal with his sexuality, Vickie has AIDS concerns, Troy is the one with the tortured artist soul- which does make him popular with the ladies but his lack of a job and his negative attitude towards finding one pisses his friends off. After all, good looks and guitar don’t help pay the bills. As for Lelaina, the only job she could find has got nothing to do whatsoever with her ideals and dreams. Things are also complicated in the love department. She and Troy are very close and obviously attracted to each other. But they haven’t done anything about it. However Troy is not pleased when she starts dating Michael (Ben Stiller) – who is the exact opposite of Troy: He has a regular job as a TV executive, he wears suits to work and has a regular paycheck. He is also ready to have  straightforward, uncomplicated  relationship with her.

Reality Bites has been labeled with more adjectives than I can possibly count. Some of the negatives include outdated and pretentious. I don’t think so. I am amongst the group that finds the movie true to heart. If you are considered some sort of rebel and can’t help thinking outside the box, and have lived a part of your teens/pre-teens in the 90s, this movie hits home. It’s just the icing on top that the movie comes with a good soundtrack.

Not that things have changed so much since the 90s. We are still on the lookout for AIDS and other STDs. We still have hard time after college. Most of us still have a hard trying to convince our parents that we won’t be happy unless we follow our own desired lifestyle.

It’s not hard to identify with the artsy, brooding and broke Troy. Why should we have to work at jobs where we know we will be fired immediately because our hearts weren’t in it in the first place? Or how many times have been in Lelaina’s shoes, where we had to work at some shitty job, for an arrogant, intolerable boss- just because it was remotely related to our dreams or we simply needed the paycheck to pay for our bills and support our dreams? We go through heartbreaks and disappointments, crushes on friends and a million other complicated situations. At the end of the day, all we want is to have our financial independence and live by ourselves and hang out with our friends.

Maybe you are past the whole post-graduation depression where reality truly bites. Well, reality bites most of the time, but some people have given up on their dreams and therefore have no empathy. If you have, you may not enjoy the movie as the rest of us. But if you do remember what it was like and/or if you are still struggling to make sense of things, this is your movie. Trust me.

You can watch some scenes here.
