What's Your Number starring Chris Evans and Anna Faris. Feat. Blythe Danner & Andy Samberg.

What’s Your Number Plot

Ally (Anna Faris) is a normal, single woman in her 30s who is working at a job that she doesn’t like, and dating guys she probably shouldn’t. Oh, and she has a tendency not to know exactly what she wants, and she listens to what other people think.

That’s why when stumbles upon a girlie magazine article, she realizes that her number (of guys she has slept with) is a bit too high than others around her, as well as the national average. Determined to keep her number 20, she decides to seek out all her exes –inspired by her sister, who is marrying one of her exes.

Surely some of hers just got better in time too? She is assisted by her hunky womanizer neighbor Colin (Chris Evans) whose detective skills are impressive. In return, Ally provides haven for Colin from all the girls he slept with.

But tracking down so many men takes a lot of time, and this ends up in Colin and Ally spending a lot of time together. As they both realize that the other is fun, spontaneous and easy-going- not to mention attractive – things get a little complicated. Can the one-night-stand guy actually be the one? And what happens if one of them doesn’t notice it on time?

*

Funny? Check. Romantic? Check. Sometimes too crude? Check.

What’s Your Number is a fun romantic-comedy with some annoying qualities, but it is interesting enough to ignore them. Of course I’m completely biased: being a girl who’s a Chris Evans fan and all that…

But putting that aside, all movies can be nitpicked to pieces. I just don’t see the point in doing with any movie (unless it really gets on my nerves), especially not with romantic comedies (although I do analyze the issue on my dating blog.)

Are you annoyed by the girl’s number? Do you think it is too low to care? Too high already? Who cares? In the end she ends up with the guy that she should- the guy who doesn’t give a damn about that (which is just as well since his number is way too huge), who can be her best friend and most importantly, this is the guy who loves exactly who she is, and supports her dreams. Combine that with Chris Evans’s looks, and you’ve already scored half of your female target audience.

I don’t get it. What’s the big deal with any number? Don’t talk about it if it bothers you.  It is a personal choice, everybody’s own business. But yeah, I would be alarmed at Colin’s number and freak out before ending up with him.

Assuming that his number is 300+, surely that does scream non-relationship-material! It says that you have one night stands all the time just because you can. That’s way too shallow and random for my taste. But I might totally overlook it for the right guy.  After all what matters is the last number, and him staying at that! As long your partner doesn’t try adding numbers when you are together, you can let any number go to hell.

*

Bottom line for What’s Your Number?

Often funny, sometimes sexy and partly annoying, it is just about anything you can expect from a romcom.

Favorite Scenes/Things from the Movie.

–          Strip basketball where Ally is the much better player

–          All of Ally and Colin’s relationship.

–          Ally’s methods of saving Colin from his dates

Favorite Lines

Ally: “I was thinking that maybe you’d want to be my date to my sister’s wedding.”
Rick (Zachary Quinto, number 19): “Are your parents going to be there?”
Ally: “At my sister’s wedding? I think so.”
*

Colin and Ally’s first actual conversation

Colin (Chris Evans): I locked myself out of my apartment – do you mind if I use your phone?
Ally: (seeing he is just trying to avoid his latest conquest) Do you think the woman coming out of your apartment could have helped you with the being locked out problem?
Colin: I look at it as trying to avoid her feelings.

*

Simon: (In British accent) Ally! It’s brilliant to see you.
Ally: [faking British accent] Simon, I can’t believe it.
Ally: This is Colin, but he has to go now.
Colin: (laughing at her faking) No, I don’t

*

Ally: He probably still works at Starbucks but he’s the best sex I ever had.
Colin: You haven’t had sex with me.
Ally: No, but I have had sex with other overly confident, struggling musicians so I’m good.
Colin: What makes you think I’m a musician?
Ally: Guitar in your apartment, you dress like a horny teenageR, I paid for that sandwich, struggling musician.

*

On finding one of the exes on Facebook, married:

Ally: He’s adorable…and so are his wife and kids.
Colin: Well he clearly doesn’t understand what Facebook is for.

*

Colin: What’d you do to turn him off?
Ally: Nothing, he’s a gentlemen.
Colin: You wore that pantsuit, didn’t you?
Ally: Hey, that pantsuit is sexy. It’s very Katherine Hepburn.
Colin: All right, let’s clear something up right now. Katherine Hepburn was not sexy, Audrey Hepburn was sexy, Katherine Hepburn was a dude.

*

Ally: I think I love you number 21.

Colin: I love you too number 300 and… (Ally puts her hand over his mouth to prevent him from finishing the number and they kiss).

Fun Cast & Entertainment Facts

–          Is it just me or the one of the exes they see on Facebook looks like Jason Segel?

–          The puppeteer ex is Andy Samberg, one of Saturday Night Live’s regulars.

–          Ally’s mother is Blythe Danner, Gwyneth Paltrow’s real-life mother.

–         The movie is based on the book called 20 Times a Lady written by Karyn Bosnak. The premise reminds me a lot of Shari Low’s book What If. The premise is similar, but in that book it is the girl who has walked away from a lot of the relationships. And although her number is lower, the changes in the guys are far more hilarious and extreme. Oh, and she does travel all around the world to find them. What If is one of my favorite books. It is hilarious, with the actual female lead being actually British and not faking it. : )

–          The disgusting boss is Community TV series star Joel McHale.

–          Heroes’ Sylar Zachary Quinto plays the doggy-style-lover/environmentalist number 19.

–          The English ex is actually English. He’s played by The Office (original UK version)’s Martin Freeman who also co-starred as the shy porn actor in the ensemble cast Love Actually.

Premise

Jamie (Mila Kunis) is a successful executive recruiter from New York. Dylan (Justin Timberlake) is a successful blog’s art director from LA. When GQ wants an art director, Jamie knows that Dylan is the guy. When he comes to New York, she dazzles him with the city and he can’t say no to such a terrific job offer.

Being new to New York, and seeing how fun Jamie is, Dylan wants to keep hanging out with her. But because they were both recently dumped (Jamie for being too romantic, and Dylan for not being emotionally available), they opt for being really good friends instead of trying to date. And then when they both miss dating and sex, they come up with the idea of having sex, as friends.

Friends with Benefits- Mila Kunis with Justin Timberlake

They think they figured out how to prevent all awkwardness, and for a while, they do have a great time as friends with benefits. Their friendship even survives the attempts of dating others. But real problems start when they will have to face that they might mean a little more to each other than just friends who hang around a lot…

Why should you see this movie?

  • Friends with Benefits is a lot of fun! I never thought I’d laugh at a Justin Timberlake movie so much. I always thought I could only handle him in small dozes (like in The Social Network).

Well, I’ve got to hand it to him- he made a great couple with Mila Kunis: they were both hilarious, entertaining, sweet and entirely likeable.

  • This romantic comedy has the right combo: 70%comedy, 30% romance.

  • It makes fun of romantic comedy clichés, but it is smart enough to abide by the clichés the romcom audience wants, especially our happy ending.

  • The supporting cast has Jenna Elfman (our very own Dharma from Dharma and Greg) and Bryan Greenberg  (One Tree Hill, Prime) and Patricia Clarkson (Married Life, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Cairo Time).

  • There are cameos by Emma Stone and Andy Samberg- they are the ones who dump Timberlake and Kunis in the beginning of the movie.

  • Kunis’ Jamie is a big romantic comedy fan, and her favorite movie is the fake movie starring Jason Segel and Rashida Jones. And Rashida Jones, Jason Segel and Any Samberg did star in an actual romantic comedy (well, a bromance) together called I Love You Man.

Segel also co-starred with Mila Kunis in the romcom Forgetting Sarah Marshall. She played the love interest and the movie was written by Segel.

  • Hawaii Five O’s nerdy medical examiner Masi Oka makes a cameo as a plane passenger sitting next to Timberlake’s Dylan.

  • It really is funny and romantic. And the sex scenes are hilarious.

Rated at 6.6 on IMDB. See it if you like your modern romantic comedies.

Entertainment References:

Poking fun at other romcoms and pop culture in general, the movie has some familiar references:

  • Dylan accuses Jamie of acting out a scene from Will and Grace, referring to the airport scene where they first meet. She’s on the conveyor belt, looking for the sign with Dylan’s name on it.

  • Dylan starts humming the Semisonic song Closing time when they are having sex for the first time. He insists the song belongs to 3rd Eye Blind, a popular 90s modern rock band that got a lot of radioplay during the same period as Semisonic. He later says that the lyrics are meaningful, and jokes about 3rd Eye Blind being poetic. In the end, he admits that the song is Semisonic’s.

3rd Eye Blind is the band that sang “Semi-Charmed Life”, How’s It Gonna Be” and “Jumper.”

  • Patricia Clarkson’s Lorna wants to have a mother-daughter getaway, and she says it will be just like a Nora Ephron movie. Nora Ephron is the screenwriter of the Meg Ryan movies You’ve Got Mail, Sleepless in Seattle and When Harry Met Sally.

  • In the beginning of the movie, right after Jamie was dumped by her boyfriend (Andy Samberg), she is complaining about romcoms to her friend. They pass by the DVD poster for The Ugly Truth, a romantic comedy starring Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler. She shouts: “Shut up, Katherine Heigl, you stupid liar!

  • After Jamie and Dylan decide to stop having sex and going back to being friends, Dylan decides that he will talk to the pretty girl they see. The girl is reading a book, and Jamie comments that it is probably a book  by Nicholas Sparks, the bestselling author of The Notebook, Message in a Bottle and A Walk to Remember.

  • Before her boyfriend broke up with her, she was waiting for him to see Pretty Woman again. Pretty Woman stars Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, and is one of the most famous romantic comedies of all time.

  • Emma Stone starred in the 2010 comedy Easy A, directed by Friends with Benefits director Will Gluck. Her sexually liberal mother with a happy past was also played by Patricia Clarkson.

  • Both lead character say that they want to be like George Clooney after they are dumped.

Jamie says “I’m just gonna shut myself down emotionally. Like George Clooney.”

Dylan says “I just want to work and f***. Like George Clooney.”

I Love You, Man starring Paul Rudd and Jason Segel

Peter Klaven (Paul Rudd) is under the impression that his life is perfect. After all, he enjoys his job as a real estate agent and his girlfriend Zooey (Rahida Jones) said yes to his proposal. But as her friends and his family find about their marriage plans, it becomes painfully obvious that Peter doesn’t have any male friends who can be his best man. Zooey’s friend Denise (Jaime Pressly) tries to get him into the group of her grumpy husband Barry (Jon Favreau)’s poker buddies while his gay brother Robbie (Andy Samberg) and his mother (Jane Curtin) fix him up with man-dates. However all these efforts end in disaster as the men either turn up to be weird, annoying or simply gay.

But soon after Peter meets Sydney Fife (Jason Segel) and it seems like it is a male friendship made in heaven. Sydney is fun, upfront, straight, has a good job, a garage full of guitars, loves the band Rush and he really does enjoy hanging out with Peter. While this newly found friendship makes Zooey at first, it slowly puts a strain on the relationship. After all Sydney is too blunt (his wedding toast suggest Zooey should give Peter “bj”s.), he loves being the ultimate bachelor and questions why Peter is getting married at all and he wants to hang out with him very often. Moreover he seems to have odd ideas on how to make Peter sell more houses- which end up pissing off his boss…

How will Peter manage to balance his problems at work, not losing Zooey and not screwing up his friendship?

A male friend recommended this to me as a very entertaining guy flick and he was right. It is really fun and original. Do not be turned off by the term guy flick because it is a very unisex movie. You may not enjoy watching this with kids or parents, but it is perfect to see alone, with friends or with your date. And you can’t say that for a lot of movies.

I love the whole cast. I always found J. K Simmons (he plays Peter’s father) hilarious, I really crack up every time I see Jane Curtin (a habit from watching the hilarious sitcom 3rd Rock from the Sun). Jon Favreau (Vince Vaughn’s writing/acting buddy- director of Iron Man films) seems to love characters that are not easy to get along with and talk way too much as he keeps playing them. But it is OK because is made for these roles.  You probably know Andy Samberg from Saturday Night Live. You can watch this hilarious SNL stint where Andy keeps punching everyone. Rashida Jones starred in the mini romcom series NY-LON with True Blood’s Bill (Stephen Moyer) that takes place in both London and New York, hence the name.

Don’t expect a laugh-out-loud comedy. As much as I watched the film with a huge grin on my face, I didn’t really get stomach cramps. For more laughter, I will suggest  watching Forgetting Sarah Marshall. It also stars Jason Segel and features Paul Rudd in a small but fun role.

That being said, I have no objection to this film’s high rating 7.3 rating. Written by John Hamburg and Larry Levin, directed by John Hamburg. Made in 2009. Click to watch “I love you, man” trailer on youtube.
