Before going into the plot summary and my review, I should first give you a “suspension of disbelief” warning. Most movies require it to a certain extent, but gory thrillers tend to need more than other flicks.

In Pathology, you are supposed to be okay with the idea of a group of borderline genius doctors committing murders for fun while seducing a more rational, seemingly nicer doctor into their games. If you are good, let’s move on.

And disregard the horror tag on IMDB. There’s nothing scary about the film. It’s, however, bloody, twisted and disturbing. But of course an R-rating has its limits (as opposed to NC-17 or unrated), so if you can handle a lot of blood and some autopsy scenes, you should be fine. (I was less freaked by this film’s gore than Tarantino’s typical blood baths, just to give you an idea.)

Pathology Plot Summary

Smart and seemingly strait-laced Ted Grey (Milo Ventimiglia) joins a group of brilliant yet arrogant pathologists who seem to dislike him at an instant. But soon, their leader Dr. Gallo (Michael Weston) takes an interest in Grey as Grey is intrigued by this tight, weird and generally obnoxious group. As he spends more time with Gallo, he realizes they are playing a game of “who commits the most original and untraceable murder,” and they seem to be only killing people who commit atrocious crimes. But when Grey joins the game and starts sleeping with Juliette (Lauren Lee Smith), who seems to be sexually open to anyone and yet is “owned” by Gallo, (according to Gallo), things soon get out of hand.

With drugs, murder and sex wrecking havoc on his life, how can Grey get out of this?

Pathology Review

As for as murder-based plots go, I liked that the movie focuses on the how and flat out gives you the motive. You know who did it and why. You get to learn how. But you don’t have a clue who will be next. You don’t know if someone’s lying. And you really don’t know when/if Grey’s morals will kick in.

As far as unrelatable and unlikeable protagonists go, Grey is pretty up there. He seems okay enough in the beginning: he’s successful, decent and nice most of the time and a loving fiancée (Alyssa Milano) until Gallo helps reveal his darker side, and then he’s only a human being if you compare him to Gallo and gang, which isn’t saying much.

The plot, acting and soundtrack are solid. There were some scenes that didn’t need to be there, and some parts that felt either irrelevant or repetitive. It could have been shorter than it’s 95 minutes and more engaging.

But as I said before, once you get your head around the premise, it is a fun, albeit flawed ride. It has some clichés, but they are outdone by some decent surprises. And I quite enjoyed the ending.

If you like twisted movies but have a limit on how much gore and weird sex scenes you can take (the sex scenes are weird when you consider the location and timing, as well as the blood involved), give this a go.

Written by Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor (credited as Neveldine and Taylor). Directed by Marc Schölermann.

Trivia:

  • Supposedly it’s similar to the German movie Anatomy, but I haven’t seen it, so I can’t comment on that. However it’s supposed to be more disturbing, so brace yourselves if you want to check it out.
  • House fans will recognize Weston as Cuddy’s boyfriend from later seasons.

The Premise

Jesse (Alyssa Milano) is a young, spirited and beautiful waitress working at a coffee shop. Ethan (Christopher Gorham) is a writer who is trying to get published, but has lost hope due to failed efforts.

The two meet at the café she is working at, and decide to go on a date. And while Ethan is cute, nice, romantic and creative, Jesse also meets Troy (Michael Landes) on the same day. Troy is nice, handsome, successful and confident and he also wants to date Jesse.

Jesse hasn’t exactly been lucky with men, so she decides to go out with them both. She will make up her mind later. What are the odds of both relationships going well, right? But they both do, and both men start to fall for her, and it looks like their feelings  are mutual. What has a girl got to do?

*

Nope, it is not cheesy or unoriginal. Trust me!

Don’t hate Jesse just yet. Yes, she puts herself in a difficult situation, but there is a lot more to this love triangle and you may be really pleased at the end.

My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend is a sweet, romantic movie with characters you can relate to (especially Ethan, since I’m a nice, romantic and ..a writer: )). It is also entertaining, but you need to hang on to the end to feel rewarded.

I’ve always liked Alyssa Milano since I grew up with her, watching and laughing with Who’s The Boss. Christopher Gorham can pull off geek and romantic lead equally well, and well-Michael Landes is the perfect choice for Troy.

It is not a very funny movie, and it is not meant to be. It is however lovely and entertaining. Give it a shot.

Written by Benji Smith and Daryn Tufts. Directed by Darn Tufts. The movie also features Beau Bridges, Jeff Bridges’ older brother, as Jesse’s uncle.

Who’s The Boss? starring Tony Danza, Judith Light, Alyssa Milano, Katherine Helmund & Danny Pintauro

Who's The Boss starring Tony Danza, Judith Light, Danny Pintauro, Alyssa Milano and Katherine Helmund.
Who's The Boss cast. From the right: Judith Light, Danny Pintauro, Tony Danza, Alyssa Milano and Katherine Helmund. 1984-1992. A fun note: Matthew Perry a.k.a Chandler Bing of Friends appeared on the 8th episode of 7th season. Way before Friends.

I am glad that there are some great new shows out there but I have a thing for nostalgia. I especially enjoy the nostalgic stuff more if I realize it is still fun after all those years.

Recently I re-watched Overboard and after seeing Katherine Helmund there, I wanted to watch “Who’s the Boss?” Again. There are reruns, youtube videos and DVDs around so if you are interested you can watch this lovely show again.

The Plot:

Tony Micelli (Tony Danza) is a nice, fun, down-to-earth single dad of Italian origin. He feels Brooklyn is getting too dangerous to raise her tomboy of a young daughter Samantha (Alyssa Milano)  so he jumps at the opportunity of living in the Connecticut suburbia. The housekeeping job is a little unconventional for a man but Tony doesn’t mind. But after packing up and leaving their old lives behind, Tony gets a little surprise. His “employer” Angela Bower (Judith Light) doesn’t know anything about this. She is a single mother, living with her small son Jonathan (Danny Pintauro). She is an advertising executive and she has left her mother Mona (Katherine Helmund) to interview the candidates. Of course she should have known that her man-loving, youthful and fun mother would go with the handsome Tony. Although Angela is a lot more conventional and reserved, she is eventually talked into giving Tony a shot. From then on it is a bliss of comedy, romance, great family moments, awkward situations and a wonderful time.

The show went on for 8 seasons, from 1984 to 1992. It may not be the funniest show ever, but it is definitely one of the sweetest and it is a show whose jokes don’t get old and you can still relate to the characters even long after it is over.  The show’s only vice is that because it takes place in the 80s, they have dressed Judith Light in the worst fashion possible. Her character Angela’s wardrobe is awful but hey, if bad clothes is the only bad thing about a show, you can definitely overlook it.

As I watch the episodes once again, I’ll be posting some really fun quotes. Here are some to get started:

Episode 1

*Angela can’t get her son to take his pet snake out of the living room.

Tony: It looks like a showdown between your snake and your mother. Remember, snake doesn’t pay your allowance.

Jonathan: Good point. (to the snake, as he is taking it away) Sorry, Wilbur. Money talks and you don’t.

************************************************

*Angela is unwilling to hire a man as her housekeeper.

Mona: Angela, what’s the problem?

Angela: The problem, Mother, is that you sent me a man for a housekeeper.

Mona: Oh, don’t be sexist, Angela. A man can do meaningless, unproductive work just as well as a woman.

*****************************

Angela is dating her boss, around the time she is about to get a promotion:

Tony: Let me tell you one thing, Angela! you will never catch me doing something dumb like sleeping with my employer!

***********************************

Episode 2

On Tony’s accidentally walking in on Angela when she is naked…

Mona: It’s the first time I feel  like we are a real family.

Angela: A family?

Mona: After all we are the only 3 people in the world who know about your mole.

Here’s a fun video. Let me knows if the video stops working.
