Source Code starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan & Vera Farmiga. Directed by Duncan Jones - director of 2009's Moon starring Sam Rockwell.

Plot

Soldier Colter Stevens  (Jake Gyllenhaal) is given a unique mission: through the help of latest technology, he will go back a little in time, “become” one of the passengers on the train that got bombed that morning. The downside is he only has 8 minutes to identify the bomber. In charge of the operation is Carol Goodwin (Vera Farmiga).  If they can find out who the bomber is, they can prevent a second attack from happening. Colter gets to try multiple times but each time he has 8 minutes. And things get even more complicated when he starts having feelings to another passenger (Michelle Monaghan). After all, preventing the first attack or saving these passengers isn’t a part of the official mission…

First Impressions * (This post was written before I saw the movie. My review after seeing the m?vie is here.)

So far I only have the trailer to have an idea and I am not that impressed. The 8-minutes premise is intriguing enough but I am not sure about the “romance” bit. I got the feeling our heroic soldier is going to try to save only Michelle Monaghan’s character and frankly, that is a bit extreme. Why not try to save the whole train? And a couple of 8 minutes for an intense connection? I didn’t exactly buy it.

I suppose we will have to wait and see. But it is going to look a little bad if our heroic soldier only attempts to save one life only. What do you think?

A promising note: Source Code was directed by Duncan Jones, who directed & co-wrote the intelligent sci-fi/drama Moon starring Sam Rockwell.

Blink starring Madeleine Stowe & Aidan Quinn

Blink starring Madeleine Stowe & Aidan Quinn
Blink starring Madeleine Stowe & Aidan Quinn. Featuring Sex and The City’s Richard Wright- James Remar.

Emma (Madeleine Stowe) is a young and beautiful violinist who was blinded at a very young age by her own mother. She plays in a band with her friends and takes care of herself with the help of her dog.

On a night out with his cop buddies, police detective John Hallstrom (Aidan Quinn) doesn’t come off as the most sensitive guy when he makes a bet with his friends that he can get Emma’s attention. He doesn’t notice she is blind, so he even goes as far to have a stripping session in front of her band.

After Emma gets an eye surgery, she goes through complications: her sight is often blurry and her brain doesn’t always process the images the moment she sees them. To make matters worse, Emma hears a strange noise one night from her apartment building. When she goes to the police station to explain, John and his friends don’t really take her seriously…until they realize that a murder has taken place. It is the work of a serial killer and the victim is Emma’s neighbor.

It doesn’t help matters that their only witness is a formerly-blind woman with a confusing sight. But John is determined to solve this case and he is growing more attracted to Emma as time passes. But under the circumstances, can this relationship have a future?

**

Blink is a really fun and harmless romantic thriller from 1994. Granted, it is not the most original storyline, but it wasn’t so tired in 1994. Yes, it was the 90s and you have your usual passionate love story (and obviously the sex scenes) along with the psychotic killer. But I like the 90s vibe of the film, and I really like seeing Aidan Quinn & Madeleine Stowe so young, and sharing the screen time. As they got older, they didn’t star in the movies often so this is a great one for their fans.

Written by Dana Stevens (City of Angels, Life or Something Like It) and directed by Michael Apted (Nell, The World is not Enough).

Fun note: Co-starring is James Remar, as a fellow cop/John’s friends on the case. Sex and the City fans will remember James as Richard Wright – the rich and cool businessman who Samantha Jones fell in love with. And got her heart broken over. And The Vampire Diaries watchers saw James Remar as Giuseppe Salvatore, father of Damon and Stefan Salvatore.

Favorite Line:

Emma’s friend (after the concert, on Hallstrom’s stripping): He gave everyone a big anatomy lesson.

Emma: How big?

I am Number Four starring Alex Pettyfer, Timothy Olyphant, Dianna Agron & Teresa Palmer.

Teen show-off John (Alex Pettyfer) is actually not your average kid. He has special powers that make it difficult for him to lead a normal life. He is also the target of a group that hunt people like him.

With the help of Henri (Timothy Olyphant), he relocates. He resumes his life as an ordinary student. He is even romantically interested in a pretty girl (Dianna Agron). But he is number four- meaning that he is the fourth one to be hunted down and killed and the first three were already taken care of.

Contradicting Henri’s common sense, he decides to stay and fight. After all, why shouldn’t he unite with the others and kick some villain ass?

Teresa Palmer plays number six.

You can watch the trailer here.

Directed by D.J.Caruso, based on the book written by James Frey & Jobie Hughes.

The story is fun and the effects look pretty good. Can’t wait to see it.

I am a sucker for a good comic book adaptation. And by a good adaptation, I don’t quite mean the comic book fans. I am a girl and even though I love my superheroes on the screen, I am not much of a comic reader. I just love the big screen better.

So it is always fun catching a solid action film with a fun script, interesting protagonist and impressive visual effects. Thor seems to fit that description. What do you think?

Thor starring Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Hopkins, Natalie Portman

Thor (Chris Hemsworth) doesn’t use his powers for the benefit his own kingdom (on another planet) so his father – King Odin (Anthony Hopkins banishes him. He wakes up on earth. He has got great fighting skills that impress even the military trained (Clark Gregg). Will the arrogant and selfish Thor turn into a thoughtful warrior who tries to protect earth, while engaging in a romance with Jane Foster (Natalie Portman)?

You can watch the trailer here.
