Brief Interviews with Hideous Men starring Julianne Nicholson, Timothy Hutton & John Krasinski

Yep, the title doesn’t sound appealing at all. And the movie is even less appealing. I gave it my best shot but after 40 minutes, I made good use of the fast forward button.
I tried to watch it because Timothy Hutton co-stars and more often than not, he stars in good movies. This is not one of them.

The plot?

Professor Adams (Timothy Hutton)’s assistant Sara (Julianne Nicholson) has been cheated on and dumped by her boyfriend Ryan. So she interviews a wide range of men on the subject of women, as means to cope with her break-up with men and well, eventually trying to make sense of them.

Unfortunately for the audience, none of the men say anything remotely interestingand Sara doesn’t come off as smart or pretty. She just seems obsessed.
Brief Interviews with Hideous Men is a 2009 movie was based on the story collections by David Foster Wallace. It was adapted and directed by John Krasinski, who also plays Ryan.

I have no idea what fascinated John into shooting this movie. Yes, the movie is supposedly a comedy/drama but it feels like one long and annoying documentary.
The movie also features Will Arnett and Dominic Cooper.
At 5.6 on IMDB, I’d have to say it is hideously overrated.

Veronica Mars starring Kristen Bell, Teddy Dunn, Jason Dohring & Enrico Colantoni

Californian high school student Veronica Mars (Kristen Bell) is an outcast.  She is pretty and smart, yet the popular circle despises her since her best friend Lily (Amanda Seyfried) got murdered at her own house and Veronica’s sheriff father Keith (Enrico Colantoni) blamed Lily’s dad for it. But Lily’s dad being a rich and powerful man, Keith got fired and ridiculed. Lily’s friends asked her to choose, and she stuck with her dad. So her boyfriend Duncan (Teddy Dunn) dumped her, and so did his circle of friends. Moreover she was raped at a party. Oh, and Veronica’s mom couldn’t handle the pressure, loss of  income/reputation and left the family “for a while”.

But being an outcast made Veronica the strong, sassy and the independent girl she is today. Her father was replaced by the jerk of a sheriff. Keith Mars now runs a private investigation business and Veronica helps him .

The episodes include that week’s case for Keith, sometimes a separate case for Veronica while father and daughter try to solve the mystery of Lily’s death and Veronica’s mom’s whereabouts, usually keeping their efforts from each other.

Of course being the high school student, Veronica needs to deal with Logan (Jason Dohring) – Duncan’s best friend and constant trouble-maker, the local motorcycle gang and possible romantic involvements.

**

Veronica Mars is a really fun crime/mystery/drama that is not quite like your other high school series. Veronica has really original and entertaining ways of dealing with trouble and cracking her cases. She is more than able to take care of herself. But of course things with Duncan are really complicated. It seems like Duncan isn’t over Veronica and doesn’t quite know how to handle it. Who can Veronica really trust apart from her new friend Wallace (Percy Daggs III)?

**

Rated at 8.7 on IMDB (voted by nearly 14,000 people) Veronica Mars is a must-see for mystery lovers. The cast and writers do a good job, although I strictly prefer season 1 and 2 over season 3.

Fun notes:

  • You might remember Enrico Colantoni as the fashion photographer from the comedy series Just Shoot Me.
  • One of the guest actors is Sydney Tamaiia Poitier. As the name suggests, she is the daughter of Oscar-Winning actor Sydney Poitier.
  • If the name and face of Jason Dohring seemed familiar, it is because you might have watched him as a fun-loving, 400 year-old, rich vampire in Moonlight. He played Josef, Mick St. John’s best friend.
  • Paris Hilton appears as Logan’s annoying girlfriend for a couple of episodes. No worries. She fits  the popular/dumb/bitchy blonde part.

No Looking Back starring Edward Burns, Lauren Holly & Jon Bon Jovi

No Looking Back starring Edward Burns, Lauren Holly & Jon Bon Jovi

Claudia (Lauren Holly) is living in the small town she grew up. Working as a diner waitress, her time is divided between her depressed mother (Blythe Danner) and her sister (Connie Britton), her live-in boyfriend Michael (Jon Bon Jovi) and with her friends – who are also Michael’s friends and they pretty much end up doing the same things every night.

Claudia is fed up with her life, but she doesn’t feel like there is much she can do, until her ex/the-love-of-her-life Charlie (Edward Burns) comes back to town. Charlie has never been content with the domestic town life and he makes sure he reminds Claudia that neither has she.

Sure, Charlie seems like an exciting change but can Claudia ever trust her again? And what about Michael?

**

Don’t accuse me of being a hypocrite for watching this just yet. So, I said I wasn’t really dying to watch Natalie Portman’s Love and Other Impossible Pursuits because it had such an unoriginal storyline. Yet here I am reviewing a film that, on the surface, offers nothing but a love triangle and small town depression. But then again, No Looking Back has two good things to offer: Jon Bon Jovi and Edward Burns. And I never had anything against Gwyneth Paltrow’s real life mother Blythe Danner, Spin City’s Nikki Connie Britton or Jennifer Esposito, who deliver nicely on the sidelines. But this movie, for me, was about Jon and Edward.

Yeah, Lauren Holly is a good actress. But what makes No Looking Back worth a look for me is that it is mainly a one-man effort, just like many Edward Burns movies.  It was written and directed by Burns, he has the lead role and he has co-produced it. He doesn’t always come up with the best storylines, but he is good at creating ordinary yet life-like characters and he has always been one of my idols. Come on- how many movie buffs fantasized about shooting their own story, with their favorite actors? I am guessing and the difference is Burns has managed it. Remember his first The Brothers McMullen? Shot with $25,000 and making 10 million – all that with an unknown cast? Yep, that was Burns. As I said, No Looking Back is nothing special storywise, but it is a nice, modest little effort.

And Jon Bon Jovi. Yes, I am a Bon Jovi fan and yeah, that automatically makes me a fan of Jon’s singing, (most) song-writing and stage presence. But believe it or not, the guy can act. He first got the acting bug when he shot a scene for buddy Emilio Estevez’ Young Guns II, where Jon was doing the soundtrack. The movie did well and the soundtrack did even better, scoring Jon a Golden Globe for Best Song, as well as an Oscar nomination.

When Jon gave acting a serious shot in the mid-90s and while he wasn’t a box office star, he was critically liked and that was what he wanted. No Looking Back is a great film for Jon to shine because the heart of the movie lies in the triangle and he is smack in the middle of it.

Jon is a good example for getting what you want the old-fashioned way. He worked really hard to become a rock star and he did. He could have bought his way into a studio, but he did auditions and took acting lessons.

So yeah, the movie is more for Burns and Jon Bon Jovi fans as well as aspiring (indie) filmmakers.

It is also for getting nostalgic. 1998. Do you remember where you were? For me, it was the start of 9th grade. But worry not- the themes in the movie won’t get obsolete. Clichéd and over-used? Sure. Obsolete? No. After all, depression, identity crisis, settling down, settling vs. chasing your dreams…they have been the core themes for a long while.

Rated 5.8 on IMDB. Sounds fair enough. No Looking Back is not recommended if you are after escapism or original screenplay. It is recommended for those who are after the familiar themes, a lovely soundtrack (Sheryl Crow, Bruce Springsteen, Lynyrd Skynyrd,Pete Yorn, The Allman Brothers Band and more) and well, for those who are wondering whether Jon Bon Jovi can act.

Oh, I also like the ending.  This part has a spoiler: the movie picks a neither- nor approach rather than either or;)

Fun Stuff:

  • The singer most heard in the background is the rock legend Bruce Springsteen and he is the favorite musician of Jon Bon Jovi. They are both from New Jersey and they performed on stage together.
  • Jennifer Espesito was married to Bradley Cooper.

Supernatural starring Jared Padalecki & Jensen Ackles

Supernatural starring Jared Padalecki & Jensen Ackles
Supernatural starring Jared Padalecki & Jensen Ackles. Feat. Jeffrey Dean Morgan

Plot Summary, Characters & Episode 1

22 years ago, baby Sam and 5-year-old Dean lost their mother to a supernatural evil. Their father John (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) barely got them out alive before the whole house burned down. From then on, it became John’s obsession to fight all supernatural evil and find what killed his wife. He also trained his sons to be warriors against any evil thing they might encounter.

Today, Sam (Jared Padalecki) is a student at Stanford, trying to get in to law school and happily coupled up with his girlfriend. Then he gets a visit from his brother Dean (Jensen Ackles) who fought evil with his father. Dean and Sam haven’t spoken in a long time, since Sam is longing for a normal life. But their dad is missing and Dean persuades Sam to help.

Following their father’s tracks, they find themselves in the middle of a case where men are abducted by a hitchhiker ghost and murdered.

Episode 1- spoilers

They solve the case. Sam goes back to his life, only to witness his girlfriend be murdered just like his mother was 22 years ago. He then leaves his Stanford life to help Dean find their father, as well as killing their mother’s killer.

**

Of course, there are many more supernatural evil to fight on the way: ghosts, demons, spirits, shapeshifters, wendigos….And it is beginning to seem like their dad doesn’t want to be found…

**

Verdict

Supernatural is a really fun horror/thriller with some decent thrills, nice one-liners for comedic relief and good chemistry between the two leading characters. I can say the show is pretty addictive. I started watching the first season DVD yesterday and I watched 7 episodes in a row. OK, so I was sick at home (since there were no new blog posts yesterday, sorry about that) but Supernatural episodes definitely kept me hooked and entertained.

It’s not for those who can’t stand to see some weirdness and/or blood on the screen. But for supernatural stuff lovers, it is a gem. Oh, and the soundtrack rocks. AC/DC, Ratt, Metallica…I feel like the music was selected just for me.

Fun notes:

* Does anybody else feel like the main casting was done by a woman? The two leads are gorgeous and appropriately, they have Jeffrey Dean Morgan as their father. How cool is that? Morgan has so far appeared in 12 episodes in the show’s seasons.

* Season 1’s 3rd Episode, Dead in the Water features a guest appearance by Amy Acker- who is no stranger to fantasy shows. She co-starred as Fred in Angel TV series.
