Harry Houdini (Guy Pearce) is already a legend with his death-defying acts and amazing tricks, even though the way he pushes himself drives his manager/friend Sugarman (Timothy Spall) crazy with the risks and challenges he takes.

Mary (Catherine Zeta Jones) is a Scottish woman who earns her living with her looks, ability to deceive and her assistant/daughterBenji (Saoirse Ronan.)

So when Mary hears that the great Houdini, who gets a kick of exposing scamming mediums, is challenging all mediums to tell him what his mother told him on her deathbed, she jumps at the opportunity to win against Houdini, and win $10,000 as well.

When the two meet, they manage to impress the other with their charm, unique outlook on life and passion. Her daughter also seems quite taken with Houdini, although Mary seems quite certain that Houdini might be more cunning than naive and might be playing her.

But no matter who’s playing who, things get very complicated when the attraction between them get stronger by the minute…

Death Defying Acts is a weird little drama/romance with no exciting scenes, apart from the couple of stunts Houdini pulls. Guy Pearce makes a perfect Houdini, but then that’s not exactly surprising since he easily becomes any character he plays. And Zeta Jones is gorgeous as always, but two good-looking, good actors don’t count for much when there isn’t much of an interesting story, the movie is PG and it takes ages to get to the romance.

The movie suffers a lot from its slow pace, and it never quite picks up. It’s not unwatchable, but I enjoyed the interviews, featuring comments about Guy Pearce impressed everyone by how he ended up more skilled than the stuntmen while he was doing Houdini’s stuff.

5/10.

After the Wedding starring Mads Mikkelsen – A 2007 Best Foreign Film Oscar Nominee

Danish Jacob (Mads Mikkelsen) has dedicated his life to the orphanage he is running in India, being a teacher/provider/friend. He is also doing his best to help the kids outside the orphanage.

So he is unwilling to go to Denmark to meet a businessman interested in investing in the orphanage. But Jacob also knows that he has no choice: it is either he gets the money, or they shut down. So he says goodbye to the kids, including Paramod, who Jacob has taken care of since he was born. His plan is to show the reality of India, get the money and fly back in a couple of days.

But the businessman Jørgen  (Rolf Lassgård) seems less than willing to give the money right away. Instead, he invites Jacob to the wedding of his daughter Anna (Stine Fischer Christensen).  It’s at the wedding that Jacob realizes that the orphanage might not be why he’s there: Helene (Sidse Babett Knudsen), his ex-girlfriend, is the bride’s mother and it won’t be the only shock he’ll get during the event, or his stay.

With a huge can of worms being opened, and Jørgen’s weird demands in order to give the money, Jacob will be in a dilemma of a lifetime, and Jørgen’s decisions will shake up his entire family. What the hell does he want? And why?

A Should-See: Like its characters, the film is flawed but highly gripping and impressive

After the Wedding (Efter brylluppet) is a gripping drama that successfully manipulates the audience’s feelings, as well as their thoughts of the characters.  Jørgen, Helene and Jacob are all multi-layered, grey characters who invoke a variety of feelings in a short amount of time.

Jacob started out as my favorite character, for instance. How can he not? Here’s a guy, away from home, working to run an orphanage. It’s as selfless as it can get. He is so unwilling to leave the kids, who have become his family, behind.

And Jørgen doesn’t make an impressive start. We all know he is up to something, and it would have been highly unlikely that a man of his resources didn’t know Jacob was Helene’s Jacob. And what kind of a man brings an ex –an ex that he suspects his wife isn’t completely over – to their daughter’s wedding?

And Helene- well, watch the movie to see what she does…

But as the characters interact more, we realize that Jacob has a less than impressive past, Helene faced some challenging choices and Jørgen, albeit flawed, is a decent father and husband.

It’s quite a fulfilling experience to watch a film where you get to experience contempt and love, admiration and anger, empathy, sympathy and forgiveness for the same character –not necessarily in that order.

After the Wedding has a wonderfully humane story and a marvelous cast.  That’s not to say the movie doesn’t have its flaws. The pace occasionally feels like it is slower than necessary, some characters add pretty much nothing to the story (OK-one character- the grandmother) and the frequent close-up of the actors’ eyes can get a bit irritating-to the point where you feel like eyes to Susanne Bier (director) are what feet are to Quentin Tarantino. And while I definitely prefer an obsession about the eyes, the movie could have used less shots of them.

But the forgivable flaws aside, I loved the movie, which was an Oscar nominee in 2007 for Best Foreign Language Film.

Directed and co-written by Susanne Bier, this 2006 gem is rated at 7.8 on IMDB. I’m rating it an 8.

You should give it a chance. Just like all movies, this movie has its share of discontent viewers, but stopping the experience is only a button away. So just start watching it. You might love it.

Actors & Their Niches 1: Robert De Niro – Cop/Gangster

Most actors hate being typecast. They try to take on diverse roles to both satisfy and challenge themselves, and also to show the movie goers that they are capable of pulling off different, difficult roles. But sometimes due to many reasons (money, luck, agent relations, great scripts that can’t be turned down, scripts that sound similar but have different edges…etc.),  they end up playing in similar concepts, and/or movies that have similarities with the others.

While some of these choices don’t sit well with audiences or critics or both, several actors bring a unique feel to the screen and we can’t help but be happy that they were involved in these projects. This is an article series featuring actors’ and their “niches”, featuring an actors’ frequented role, premise and/or genre.

Granted, twice-Oscar winner Robert De Niro is the favorite of many directors and movie goers, but sometimes, it seems like he has played one of these two on the screen way too often:

COP

Freelancers –  Robert is a new cop’s dead father’s old partner

Righteous Kill – He teams up with other cop Al Pacino to catch a murderer of murderers, who is possibly a cop.

15 Minutes – Cop (De Niro) works with Fire Marshal Burns to bring down a video-taping killer.

Copland  – De Niro is an internal affairs officer

Flawless – Cop has to work alongside a drag queen for rehabilitation purposes.

Mad Dog and Glory -Police photographer appreciated by a mobster.

Showtime –  Cop forced to work alongside an actor for a reality show.

City by the Sea –  Cop with a son who has committed a crime.

GANGSTER/MOBSTER

The Godfather (2, 3)

Goodfellas

Analyze This – gangster who needs a shrink

Analyze That – sequel of analyze this

Casino – gangster

Once Upon a Time in America – gangster who returns home

The Untouchables – Al Capone

2 Outside of The Niche(s) Robert De Niro Movies

Stardust: (My ultimate favorite Robert De Niro performance and movie) You can’t beat a tough, scary captain of pirates who loves to cut hair and get dressed in pretty clothes when the crew isn’t looking…

Limitless: Writer (Bradley Cooper) finds a drug that makes him extra productive, but his new enhanced mind will also get him in some really big trouble.

*

With so little time, and so many movies, there are a few De Niro movies upcoming and old, that I want to catch, including The Big Wedding, The Last Tycoon and New York, New York.

What are your favorite gangster/cop/outside-of-niche De Niro movies?

English princess Caroline (Alicia Vikander) marries the not-so-stable Danish king Christian VII (Mikkel Boe Følsgaard) for political reasons. He is more interested in hookers than he is interested in his wife or the country.  So he decides that he wants a fun queen and tells his doctor/advisor Johann Friedrich Struensee (Mads Mikkelsen) to make her queen fun.

However, what the obnoxious Christian didn’t foresee is that while spending time together, Friedrich and Caroline will fall in love and complicate things remarkably not just for Christian, but the whole-country.

Seductive, Intriguing & Award-Winning: A Royal Affair

The plot summary above is solely based on the trailer as I haven’t had a chance to see the movie yet. However the trailer totally hooked me: I love passionate love stories and a good period piece. While I don’t really like the idea of cheating in a normal relationship, I love stories where it’d be a sin not to cheat (see Revenge, or The Ledge for examples)- meaning the marriage wasn’t voluntary, divorce seemed unlikely or the husband is a (psychotic) jerk.

I’m also highly entertained by the “spend time with my wife/girlfriend (or husband/boyfriend) while I do something else” premises. We all know who gets the girl/guy in these stories.

And as for A Royal Affair, you don’t just tell your older, charismatic, sexy and smart advisor (Mads Mikkelsen) to make your queen fun and have the nerve to be surprised when you realize they are sleeping together. Just by looking at the trailer, I can say I’d be sleeping with Struensee too. Any sane, miserable-in-her-marriage- queen would.

It’ll be fun to watch Struensee making the “queen” fun, while having quite a lot of fun himself. And when people find out, it will also cause a lot of complications for the nation that Christian may not have the chops to deal with.

Directed by Nikolaj Arcel and based on the novel by Bodil Steensen-Leth.

Rated at 7.7 on imdb and winner of 2 Silver Berlin Bears, I’m so looking forward to see A Royal Affair (En kongelig affære). What about you?
