Public Enemies (2009)

Directed by: Michael Mann

Johnny Depp in Public Enemies. It is a fun and fast ride. And it takes a really good movie to be just that at 140 minutes!

Johnny Depp is John Dillinger. He is smart, fast, loyal to his friends and romantic & sweet to his girl. He robs banks because he just loves the thrill of it. He can escape prison, saves his friends from prison and tries not to harm any innocents in the mean time.

The movie involved less robbery scenes than we expected-as one friend put it. It includes more violence than you hope for and it occurs where you don’t really want it. But is it a bad movie? Absolutely not. I love period pieces. I love the glory and the romance of it. Set in the 1930s, Public Enemies offers well-crafted costume design. Johnny Depp is sexy, mischievous and addicted to action as Dillinger. Bale is well…some complain that his acting is flat. But then so is his character. He joins forces with the bureau who is run by Hoover (Billy Crudup) – a man more interested in looking good for the press and getting publicity than justice. Otherwise they would have spent half the effort on other criminals.

Our respect and admiration for Dillinger weakens as he makes mistakes and starts to act more like a pawn than the expert chess player. His weakness and love for his girlfriend (Marion Cotillard) don’t really help him either.

Funnily enough, I have gone to see the movie with two friends and ran across three other friends who happened to be watching it in the theater next to ours. The group of three were disappointed. I turned out to be the only one who thoroughly enjoyed the movie; until the last 15 minutes or so – at least.

The whole John Dillinger myth the movie built was completely destroyed towards the end.

As desperate he was, he made mistakes that he would have seen coming and could have solved.) Still, John is a very interesting character and immensely enjoyable to watch. Recommended.

People who screwed us over…in a good way.Part 2: John Grisham

I am not sure fans of Hemingway or Tolstoy will enjoy Grisham but millions of people love him nevertheless. His stories are captivating, original and hell- i think his name might be synoym for the concept page-turner.

Even if you haven’t read him, you have probably watched or heard about the movie adaptations. The Firm, The Pelican Brief, A Time to Kill, Runaway Jury, The Client… to name a few. The movies always had major stars in them such as Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington (The Pelican Brief), Dustin Hoffman and John Cusack in The Runaway Jury and Chris O’ Donnel and Gene Hackman in The Rainmaker. The list goes on.

His paycheck for his second novel’ s (The Firm) was $6 million. The movie starred Tom Cruise.

So how did it happen? How did he become such a consecutive best-seller? How does he find so much material for so many books that are about lawyers and the law? Well, here it goes:

John Grisham is from Missisipi and is a lawyer. His first novel is A Time to Kill, though it was published after the success of The Firm. He worked the long hours at a law office. One day he witnessed a trial that practically changed his life.

A father’s young daughter had been raped and there was a chance the guilty party could walk away.  John was a father too and he thought to himself  that he would want to shoot the bastards dead. Hell, maybe he really would. So he imagined a story where the father was black, the girl was 10 and the rapists were white. He also imagined the father would shoot the guys- right at the trial. He also imagined a young white lawyer who took up the case and racist groups that made life difficult for everyone. And he wrote A Time to Kill. The movie features Matthew McConaughey, Sandra Bullock, Samuel L. Jackson, Ashley Judd and Kiefer Sutherland. It is a good book and a good movie that pays its respect. But funnily enough the books were rejected  when John first sent it to publishers. He gave up after a while and wrote The Firm. This book went to print, and became a smash hit. After that, he didn’t have a hard time finding a publisher.

The path to building your career-no matter what the sector-involves a lot of failed expectations, unreturned calls and emails to job applications, bad intervies and well, hopeless moments. I believe trying to make it as a writer is even more difficult because rejection gets to be a part of your everyday life. Sometimes a project you are so fond of are going to be turned down. But just like you do not hit rock buttom and enter into the depression zone after a bad interview, you have to take it in and start working on something else. Grisham is one of the richest and most successful writers. I loved his books so much my dad seriously thought I should become a lawyer. My addiction to courtroom suspense started with him. I only dream about improving my penship so that I can become half the writer he is.

But there. You have a guy who managed to look after his family, produce a book in  between 70 hour work weeks, handle rejection and write another book among that hectic work schedule. Wow!!!!

Now you have a guy, who takes cases when he wants, writes full time, who can afford anything he wants, and coaches baseball at his kid’s team. (Did I mention he wanted to be a baseball player when he was a kid himself ?)

So as far as idols go, Grisham is one of my heroes. Who are yours?

Shelter starring Brad Rowe and Trevor Wright. Written and directed by Jonah Markowitz. 2007.

Shelter (2007)

Starring Brad Rowe, Trevor Wright

Rowe as Shaun on the left. Wright as Zach on the right.
Rowe as Shaun on the left. Wright as Zach on the right.

California shores. Zach is skate-boarding, surfing working on his art, dealing with his on and off relationship with Tori, taking care of his 5 year old nephew Cody and dealing with the ever demanding and borderline selfish Jeanne (Tina Holmes) – Cody’s mom. He is a busy young man who is not exactly happy with his career options either. Taking shift jobs and barely making ends meet, he also tries to keep his dreams of being an artist alive.

That’s when he runs across Shaun. Shaun’s Zach’s best friend’s big brother. Shaun has become a big shot writer, living in Hollywood. A recent break-up and writer’s block has made him come back to his home town. Shaun is very good-looking, easy-going and fun to be around. The two start surfing and Zach’s world becomes less complicated around him. Or so he thinks…The only catch is that Shaun is gay, and Zach seems to be drawn to him- although during his 20 something years,he has known himself to be  straight. One day-again after a very fun day out together, Shaun kisses Zach. It is soft, repeated and romantic. Zach responds in the same way. However after that Zach is just angry. With himself, with Shaun and pretty much with everyone and everything else. His sister is worried that Zach might be a “fag” and she definitely doesn’t want Shaun around Cody. Tori isn’t happy with Zach’s weird behaviour either. And meanwhile little Cody loves Shaun, who is much better with him than Jeanne ever will be.

But Zach has had enough. He just stops analyzing and sulking- he goes to Shaun’s place. He kisses him the moment Shaun opens the door, leading to a passionate make-out session that leads straight to the bedroom.

It was hot, romantic and passionate all at once. Then Zach is truly happy, in a very long time.  They hang out, stay in and have a blast. Shaun is even willing to postpone going to L.A or better yet, take Zach with him. He is also very supportive of Zach’s dreams. But trouble starts when Shaun’s brother finds out. Zach isn’t happy to face the others, no matter how well-intentional they might be. His sister is also planning to move away with her boyfriend for a while, planning to leave Cody with his uncle. This results in Zach driving Shaun away…

I won’t give away the ending and you should really see the movie for yourself. It is a beautiful movie. It is a great story of love, relationships, family and dreams. It pictures well the struggles we go through to find out who we are. And I believe Shaun represents the perfect partner (whatever your inclinations are) and Zach represents the person on the verge of big decisions…Forget about the title, it is one of my favorite romantic stories ever…

Brad Rowe (Shaun) and Jackson Wurth (Cody). So Shaun is gorgeous, loving, fun, surfing and a writer. And he is good with kids. His character sure seems to good to be true but at least Brad Rowe is a good enough actor to makes him seem real.W

Latter Days starring Wes Ramsey, Steve Sandvoss and Joseph Gordon- Levitt

I don’t really care much for Brokeback Mountain. I had such high hopes for that movie. Being a big fan of Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal and an admirer of Ang Lee, I was sure I was going to watch a feast of a movie. I was wrong. The cinematography was brilliant as the trailer promised but I just failed to like the characters. I saw lust, obsession and possession. Yes, I did see some flicker of the love implied during some scenes, but that was it. I was disappointed. Frankly, I was bored too.

But then I stumbled upon the DVD of Latter Days and saw a really romantic, emotional and fun story.

BEWARE OF SPOILERS!!!

Latter Days starring Wes Ramsey and Steve Sandvoss. Written and directed by C. Jay Cox.

I mostly like Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s work- he has been the part of a wonderful cast in the sitcom 3rd Rock from the Sun- a show that made me laugh till my muscles hurt. I also watched as he can pull of difficult roles like a male hustler in Mysterious Skin and a guy whose past mistakes haunt him, in addition to having to cope with everyday life with severe short term memory lost in the film The Lookout. When I saw his name among the cast, I grabbed Latter Days. It turned out he only had a supporting role, which was just as interesting as his previous roles.

The main story takes place between Christian and Aaron; played respectively by Wes Ramsey and Steve Sandvoss. Christian is plainly and proudly gay and promiscuous. Aaron ,however, is a Mormon missionary. When the young missionaries take residence close to Chris, things get complicated. Confident that he can bag any guy (gay or straight) , gorgeous Chris makes a bet with his flat mate that he can have sex with Aaron in no time. Although starting to be infatuated with Chris, Aaron tries to hide his feelings. After all, homosexuality is considered to be one of the biggest sins and he likes his mission. He does believe in God and (most of ) “the book” ’s teachings.

LatterDays
Another case of straight actors going gay for the roles. I wonder if they found it weird or fun.

While Chris is trying to seduce him (sometimes subtly and sometimes quite openly), the two develop a bond.

LatterDays-2555

And it all goes downhill for our missionary when his friends catch them kissing…

ld_1

Panicked, he decides to go home to his parents and confront whatever problems await him. But Chris, no longer caring about the bet and totally in love, goes   after him. He catches up with Aaron at the airport, telling him that he loves him.

There in the middle of a snow storm, they share a second kiss-this time initiated by Aaron.

At the airport inn, the two have one of the most beautiful love-making seen on screen. I am saying love-making because I absolutely adore a sex scene that takes place after both characters have fallen madly in love with each other.

Of course conflicts continue for Aaron- he doesn’t want to give up on his family but they do see his feelings for Chris as some type of illness…When Chris wakes up alone, he has to go back to his life in Cali, upset and lovesick.

After going through all the “treatments” his parents make him, he sees a sign that he just should be with Chris.

The scene where they finally get back together is marvelous. But to catch all the beautiful scenes, please check the movie out.
