One-sided Business Ethics and Expectations

Freelancing is a bliss. Yes, you don’t have a monthly/timely paycheck (this is the worst and probably the only downside at all). And still you have to deal with a boss. In this case, the boss is pretty bearable and mostly fun to work with. His wife, however, is insufferable. I had to do two projects for her and we had some problems on both. The problematic thing was that I was supposed to work very hard and very fast with a computer program that I had just learned and had had no time to practice. Since they had a tech guy in the office, I had to camp out there  9 to 5 for about a week so that I could get help from him if needed. There are so many problems in this scenario.

1) I signed a contract to freelance and yet there I was, working in an office- working the usual hours, open to supervision- something I am really allergic to.

2) I am social and extroverted so if I am to work in an office, it should have the odd social perks, such as the watercooler chats. There was nothing social about 15-20 people working at their desks, not bothering to talk to the newcomer (myself) -totally isolated from the rest; apart from the 1-2 group mates that happen to be working on the same project.

3) So I have the pressure, a program that drove me crazy, co-workers that no way deserved the “co” and a demanding supervisor.

Results?

* I didn’t progress too well, was a little late on the deadline (on the supposed deadline-I’ll talk about that in a minute) and she wasn’t very pleased. By the time the project had ended, I was swearing off the program.

* Then the boss’ s wife called again, asking for another project. I said yeah- thinking I had taken all the precautions to deliver a flawless project. But no. the program had problems again. Problems tech guy couldn’t solve on the phone. A whole project I had had to do manually and delivered delayed again. So I had a fall out with the wife. Of course she didn’t take any responsibility and tried to put all the blame on me. Was she right? No. Let me prove you why.

They make you sign an agreement before you start to work.  It tells you to deliver on time, to produce correct and respect confidentiality. All is good and right so far, right? However the agreement doesn’t really cover the freelancer. While the it mentions possible paycuts if the freelancer happens to make mistakes, it doesn’t claim any responsibility if the paycheck is late. My 2 paychecks are late, and it is the case with all the freelancers. So shouldn’t they pay a fee for being late?

Shouldn’t they be more tolerable towards you when there are problems with the system that even the tech guy can’t work out and/or tries to take the easy way out by putting the blame on your computer (which he had to admit wasn’t the case) and/or the experienced office workers have similar problems with you and they need help? How about that?

Why don’t  the people hiring you have to respect your rights but you have to be perfect? Since when is unfair trade OK? If my service needs to be perfect, so should the working conditions. Am I dreaming? Maybe. But I believe this is what happens when the boss  (wo)men “make the mistake of hiring ” people who are able to question. For instance, blame Marx if you will. Blame you and your “super-efficient” support teams and your socially inadequate employeess who give in to your every whim. But you can not make me accept your faults. I might need the money but I don’t need the slavery.

Oh and why is this post here? We all need the money to finance our dreams. We have to put off with all kinds of people. It just doesn’t mean we should give in without a fight.

Twilight Mania: Robert Pattinson, Pretty Vampires and the First Twilight Movie

Even the grown-ups (females) lust after Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) .  In this year’s MTV Movie Awards, Jim Carrey typically won the best comedic performance and added a little joke for Pattinson in his speech. He mentioned Robert as “the good-looking kid from Twilight”.

Whether you have read the book or not (and sometimes especially if you haven’t heard the book), you fall for the story, and you fall for Cullen. And it is just too easy to identify with Bella. It doesn’t matter how old you are, or where you are from. She is plain and definitely not strikingly pretty. So the fact that the most gorgeous guy in school notices her and falls for her, is a fantasy most women ponder. Then add the mutual & etarnal love to the equation, and voila…we are hooked.

Edward Cullen is the perfect creature ( he is a  vampire so I guess the word creature is appropriate).  He is bloody sexy, deeply romantic and loyal to the end. He has amazing stamina and strength (again, perks of being a vamp) and he can hear anyone’s thoughts, apart from his love interest’s. Oh, let’s not forget the fact that he can play the piano, dance and literally & metaphorically knock you off your feet. So most men are bound to hate him and the movie. They say that there isn’t enough action in the movie (sure there isn’ t, it is basically a love story) and that the characters aren’t realistic (people- it is set in a world with vampires, so why are we questioning impossibly pure loves? Or the fact that Edward looks at Bella like she is dinner? She is!  He even mentions it himself, remember?). And again, why would you go see Twilight if you don’t want a love story? Have you seen the trailer? Or the poster, for that matter?

twilight-2
Seriously, who really looked at the poster and thought this was an action movie?

Let’s not discuss how a character or love like this wouldn’t exist in the real world. He is a vampire. If you can buy that, you can buy the rest. Maybe the effects weren’t good enough. I don’t really care. I have seen much worse in movies with much larger budgets-and those were ACTION movies.

The acting? Some find it mediocre. Some find it just right. The music is perfect, the author Stephenie Meyer approves of it (she even appears very shortly in a scene).

My mom-mid 50s-  adored it and she hates vampires.  The 16 year-old-sister of a good friend loved it and so did I. Give it a shot. Just don’t watch it with a male if you can help it…

And if you have read the book, there will be the issue of how it is not nearly as good. People, there are not many readers out there who have been satisfied with the movie adaptation of anything. Yet when you haven’t read it beforehand and liked the flick, then you just wish people would stop bitching about the differences and talk on about how much you enjoyed the whole experience.

“Ike” Aykut Ogut : Can you coach your own life?

Aykut “Ike” Ogut
Aykut "Ike" Ogut
There are very few Turkish men I admire and respect; and this guy has entered the list at the top. I had not heard his name before, not up until a couple of weeks ago when I ran across his book: “Evrenden Torpilim Var”. Translated into English, it basically means “The Universe Favors Me”. Although an interesting title, I wasn’t intrigued by the average cover- it resembled any other self-help/life-coaching book.
Evrenden Torpilim Var - The Universe Favors Me (cover)

But when I read the back, I was hooked. What did it say? Oh well, basically this guy has given a summary of two major parts of his life. His weight did reach 150 kgs (something around 300 pounds),  he has been to jail where he found out he lost his father, he was beaten so hard that he lost sight with one eye ,survived on cornflakes mixed with beer, has lived in a foreign country (the States) where he moved to before learning the language…
Then he narrates the second part where he learned that foreign language so well that he did voice-overs , played leads in movies in that country, lost 70 kgs (~140 IBS), … and basically got everything he wanted out of life.
I read the book in 2 days. It is funny,thought-provoking and very easy to identify with. You don’t really have the guts,or the will to challenge the author on any matter because whatever you have been through, he has been through worse. Whatever you want to manage, he has managed it. The guy has studied acting in Los Angeles and played in theaters in New York. He wasn’t just another American stuggling actor, doing whatever job he could findto survive:he also had the visa issues that us foreigners are unfortunately so familiar with.  He has a theory that you might disagree with: He believes that the universe presents you a reality that you have helped be created. When you are about to say, “come on man-you’ ve got to be shitting me!”, he comes up with so many good real life examples that hit home that you admit defeat. And it is in your favor to do so, because this guy has pulled off so much,so well.
Let’s take a broad look: He makes good money, loves what he does, he can work in the States and in Turkey as an actor and voice artist/director, he is an established life-coach (he also has a funny story about his American coach who taught him all about everything) and h?mm-oh yeah- he is also married to his soulmate.
A definite role-model for me. I am so happy to find a Turkish person who is just as crazy and well-passionate. As I finish, I want to share my fav. advice from him: (paraphrased)-Don’t listen to your friends or family when it comes to your dreams. They may have the best intentions but they will only get in your way. I should know-my friends were asking me to if I hadn’t been famous yet and suggestes I come back to Turkey. And there I was working as a dishwasher…* Does it sound familiar, people? My parents-especially my mom-loves to talk about how 95% (or more) of the people in the movie/writing businesses are miserable and I should get a regular job and do the rest as a hobby. I have had the same dream for 13 years. Give me a break. I might fail- I just wanna fail on my own terms.*Oh and the good friends? They have so much to say about our age, romantic possibilities and expeactations. I sometimes find myself thinking “who are these people??? Are they there for encouragement or sabotage? Geez!!!

This book is recommended for anyone who dreams about more than dating just anyone, more than scraping by, who is driven by his/her own personality and dreams; rather than being a part of the herd.
If you are a fan of the herd, he does recommend those people to use the book for straightening an uneven end of a table or something…

Knowing starring Nicolas Cage

Knowing movie poster starring Nicholas Cage
Apparently, nothing everything with Nicolas Cage features some cool action or an intelligent script.

Knowing  (2009)

(Beware of spoilers!!!)

So I have a tendency to follow Alex Proyas’ work. How can I not? The guy shot The Crow. And although not as great as that, Dark City was in its element. Both movies were gloomy and questioning; yet they were not without a glimpse of hope. Having come right out of the theatre of after seeing Knowing was very disappointing, even if you do not compare it to the two cult classics. I like Nicolas Cage, and I do like to see some supernaturalism on the screen. Alex & Cage should have equaled greatness. Instead, what we got was… I truly don’t know. The movie was quite OK during the first half. Then, suddenly it turned into a weird combo of Dark City, The last Indiana Jones movie and The Day The Earth Stood Still. OMFG. I am no  movie critic; I am merely a movie fan so I will honestly the say the ending crushed me. Here are the questions that fail to be answered:

Why those two kids? Why two rabbits? What was with the Stones? Why wait 50 years? Why all the religious references then to make a cliché of a spaceship? Why let everyone else die? Cage’s character wasn’t so bad either. A smart, loving guy…So why get rid of him? So the fans will come with different answers but I don’t get why the makers of the movie bothered…Fine. So worse movies have been made. But the guys in dark coats, white  expressionless faces…resembling Spike from Buffy? Or maybe Silas from The Da Vinci Code?

I ’ll just keep watching The Crow and Dark City, then…

Do you want to watch a fun Nicholas Cage movie? Great. Watch The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. Or pretty much any other Nicolas movie. Just not Knowing. Rated 6.4 on IMDB.
