Enough with the cliché talks already. This is a romantic comedy and a bloody good one at that. It has some really good moments when it makes fun of the clichés; some of which prove to be true and some of which are disproved-all in a hilarious fashion. Yes, the leads are going to fall for each other. Of course there are things individuals (movie-goers/critics) might feel should have been done differently. But please, do not talk about how it could have been better, had Katherine’s character Abby not fallen for Gerard’s character Mike. Oh, yes, I read such a viewer comment. This is a romantic comedy, people! If you have any objections on the concept, read on at your own risk. Because well, in this movie we have misunderstandings, fights, funny/embarrassing moments, romantic realizations…the works. But they all come within a fun script and two really gorgeous & extremely funny leads.

The movie is dirty, fun and romantic. A nice combination.

Abby is an organized, control-loving T.V. producer who is big on her principles and is a hopeless romantic- though she tends to let go any sort of spontaneous act when it comes to dating.

Mike is the host of The Ugly Truth: he gives out the most “practical” relationship advice: Men can’t be tamed or trained, all women need to do to get a relationship is to get thin, pretty and…yeah just thin and hot will do it.

So when Abby’s boss hires Mike and she is forced to work with him, it is a nightmare for her-well, only temporarily. It turns out Mike’s theories do work and she lands herself her new, hot neighbor Colin (Eric Winter). But then of course things are never that simple. Abby, despite her compulsive traits is fun. Mike, despite making vulgar and shallow comments on relationships and sex, has a loving relationship with his nephew, has had his heart-broken and seems to be wanting Abby-which definitely wasn’t the plan.

So? What do we have here? An actually nice, romantic fella who has been hurt so now he is getting a kick out of playing the sexy jerk. Oh, yes you have seen it before. You also have a girl who seems to be able to let go once she is with the right guy; a guy who likes her the way she is. Yep, we saw that too. It is an R-rated rom-com, which is definitely not a first for the genre. But we are not striving for a 100% originality here. The movie is full of great hilarious one-liners and lovely performances. You don’t really have to find it realistic. Of course it does seem far-fetched that the misunderstood romantic will look like Gerard Butler or your co-worker will be as hot as Katherine Heigl. That is not the point. The point is the movie is funny with eye-candy. Just sit back and enjoy. Why I think guys will like it? Here are some random quotes. Oh, hell I laughed at them too!!!

———————————————————————————————————————————————-

Mike: You’re all about comfort and efficiency!
Abby:What’s wrong with comfort and efficiency?
Mike: Well nothing, except no one wants to fuck it.

———————————————————————————————————————————————-

Abby: My cat stepped on the remote.
Mike: Well, be sure to thank your pussy for me.

——————————————————————————————————————————————

Abby: I am your producer.

Mike: I like women on top.

Why Movie Taste is Relative feat. Christian Bale, Quentin Tarantion, Ridley Scott & More.

Your favorite painter, movie-maker, musician, …Who you like and why you like them are easily defined by you. Depending on how fanatic you are, you are ready to argue the merits and reasons of your taste. And yet the argument is unlikely to have a winner.

Take my student advisor for instance. He is one of my favorite people and one of the few that I respect, and yet he was very skeptical when I told him about my intentions  about studying film. His reason? I don’t like Quentin Tarantino and therefore I do not belong there. I thought he was insane. I am skeptical of all authority when it comes to passion and dreams, and when a business T.A. condescends you about your dreams, you just want to punch him in the face.

The thing is, people don’t have to like Polanski or Tarantino. Or Spielberg or one of the Scott (Ridley Scott, Tony Scott) Brothers. You might think the Coen Brothers have got it all and some will remain unfazed by their efforts. And that’s completely alright.

You don’t have to follow all the festivals. It is OK to like a movie just for the sake of loving a low-budget, character-driven film,  just like loving a good old epic film  (in my case I love Braveheart) does not make you unworthy of applying to the MFA area of your choice.

Christian Bale is quoted to have said “I think there’s a kind of pretentiousness to the idea that serious work is only found in low-budget independent movies–I can’t stand that snobbery.”

I couldn’t agree more. He has proven himself in a variety of roles. I think only mentioning The Machinist and Batman in the same sentence will suffice to prove the point.

Some people loved Black Swan. Some people hated it. Some couldn’t see why many people adored The Social Network. Some people thing The Hangover is an awful movie, and some just laughed their butts off while watching it…

It is all relative. It depends from person to person, and that is all the whole point. That’s why it is so fun to share- you never know what the other person might think.

Touch of Pink starring Kris Holden-Ried, Jimi Mistry & Kyle MacLachlan

Alim (Mistry) has a good life. He has moved in with Giles, his super-sexy boyfriend and he is very happy. Giles (Kris Holden-Ried) of course has no reservations about being gay, living in London and all. Alim,on the other hand, is from a Muslim family. His family lives far away and has no idea he is not interested in women. When his traditionalist mother comes to visit, meaning to find the perfect girl for his son, Giles has to pretend he is Alim’s straight room-mate. Giles’ sister is introduced as Alim’s loved one and even the idea of a bride from another culture is enough to drive the mother nuts.

Kyle MacLachlan plays Alim2s imaginary companion, Cary Grant’s spirit. He sort of displays the only father figure in Alim’s life. The mother develops a close friendship with Giles; having no idea that he is actually his son’s lover. Alim’s mother is not the only problem. Giles is having difficulty understanding Alim’s reservations. When the truth is revealed, all hell breaks loose for everyone.

The movie is very funny, sweet and emotional. The cultural differences are told in the most poignant way. You go between wanting to hug the mother and punch her and it goes same with Giles. Just sit back and be ready for laughs.

Watchmen starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Malin Akerman, Matthew Goode, Jackie Earle Haley and Patrick Wilson

The movie is everything the trailer promises.  I am not going to say it was perfect and that the whole 162 minutes were equally exciting. Let’s just say I prefer watching movie adaptations of comics (or in this case a graphic novel) and this movie was rather entertaining. Below are the Watchmen:

2680938775_e9a85908af

From upper left: The Comedian, Rorschach, Silk Spectre II

Lower left: Nite Owl II, Ozymandias, Dr. Manhattan

It is the 1980s, alternate world. Everything starts with the death of The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). Or let’s say everything restarts. When the former “superhero” is murdered, Rorschach develops the theory that someone might be after the whole gang. Adrian Veidt (Matthew Goode) finds the idea ridiculous- he has made his secret identity as Ozymandias public knowledge and is living his life out in the open as a well-respected, multi-billionaire businessman. His partner in most matters is Dr. Manhattan (Billy Crudup)- who has turned into a blue-skinned man- with some interesting powers; due to a lab accident. He also happens to be the only Watchman with superhuman powers. He is not very concerned either. The world has some other serious issues- like the possibility of  Russia going into atomic war against the United States. Silk Spectre II (Malin Akerman) – his girlfriend- does not share the cold-bloodedness. Also sick and tired of Manhattan’s apathy, she finds comfort in the friendship of Nite Owl II (Patrick Wilson)…

Just like any other movie, I favor some characters over the others. The character I enjoyed watching the most was definitely Rorschach (played by Jackie Earle Haley). With the namesake inkblot test patterned mask, his average built (becomes obvious how much smaller he is during the prison scenes). He fights well, he keeps a diary that we hear the entries of, offers his dark points of view on life. Yet he has the best storylines and he can more than take care of himself when in trouble.

The Comedian ( played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan) plays a crucial role in the movie – we get to see a lot of him through flashbacks and notice actions that are borderline psychotic- he can kill innocent people just because they get on his nerves, for instance.  You can’t really tell what this guy is doing in a team that aims to protect people…This personality adds up to the dark atmosphere. His morals and motives are very to hard to get…

While Dr. Manhattan has the most interesting backstory and some really cool lines, his apathy and figure start stalling the movie after a while.

Although we see a lot of the Night Owl II, we don’t really get to know him. Nor we care about Silk Spectre. Somethings feel missing. Somethings are left without explanation and that part of the story doesn’t make sense. You will know what I mean when you see Ozzy’s “pet”. I for one am on the lookout for the director’s cut. Still, I wouldn’t mind a sequel. It might be flawed, but it is damned good entertainment.

The movie has many flashbacks that involve the past of the watchmen, and the “superheroes” that came before them…
