The 5 Questions to Answer Before You Apply to an Office Job

Posted on February 19, 2010 Written by Pinar Tarhan

BBC The Office with Ricky Gervais
The show tells the story of a branch of a firm- this is the least successful one. The employees mostly ignore or despise each other. The number of normal (sane) people? Not many...

The economy is bringing you down. The level of competition is depressing and you are starting to lose confidence. You are starting to feel like you are not good enough or you will never find a job that is good enough for you. Stop right there. Yes, stop brooding and just read what I have to say. There is a chance it will give you the boot of confidence and positive energy you need.

I have been you. My friends are you. You graduated, maybe not with the perfect GPA but you have done OK. You have some work experience but you are failing to get the jobs you are applying to.

No, I am not claiming to be a guru here. I am just experienced, rebellious and challenged enough to defy the status quo. I am also a good observer. I have worked office-jobs took part-time gigs and suffered through internships. I am working as a freelance writer now. But I am getting calls from my CVs on the job search sites that  I forgot about. And while I can get a full-time office job, I am simply not looking for one. Assuming that you value stability and a regular paycheck more than I do, let me entertain and “warn” you a little bit.

I want you to consider the office life- yes, before you are actually hired to get into one. Chances are you tried the office, and it didn’t go smoothly. Otherwise, you wouldn’t be on the lookout. So instead of applying to all smart-sounding ads, let me do a little test on you. A little consideration beforehand might save a lot of time and pain.

1) The Hours: Do you really want to work in an office? Seriously. Just forget about the paycheck for a second. Do you want a life of working from  9 to 5 (which is a lot longer in this day and age, as you might have noticed)?

2) The dress code: Do you want a dress code? Unless you got a job in a creative field, let’s face it, you will be expected to dress according to the wishes of the company. And if that is the case, you might need to have a complete wardrobe makeover. Before you notice, your first couple of paychecks might be spent on office wear. Oops. And you thought you could save a little…

3) Size does matter: Do you want to work for a small, medium or large-sized firm? Yes, it is not just about getting into any job. You need to consider your needs and wants. Which one do you think you are better suited for?

I worked in them all. A corporation means, you can avoid the big boss for a long time but you are still under the observation of your supervisor. A small firm means even the top guy/gal knows your name. If you like anonymity, big ones are recommended. But keep in mind that big firms also tend to be more structured and formal.

If you get fired right away, it does look worse than being unemployed. So does quitting in a rush. So yeah, you need to consider your personality traits and expectations before you apply.

4)  The Paycheck: Any amount sounds lovely when you are broke, but never forget about the fact that you are not only selling your services and intellect, but your time too. You are trading all that for money and if it doesn’t compensate accordingly, you will be discouraged, demotivated and uninspired. These three make for an unproductive employee and the unproductive don’t climb the ladder fast. I am just saying.

5) The co-workers: If you have a chance to check the company culture before you get in- or better yet before the interview- please do. Find forums, ask around in your social circle. Is the environment friendly? Competitive? Social? Even if you think you can survive an unfriendly group of colleagues, the reality does end up being different.

****** *********************************************************************

Do your research. If you know about all these, you will know whether applying is a good idea or not. If you know the answers, you will adjust your CV accordingly, and your resume will stand out amongst others. If you know the answers, you will know more about the company than its products and services (I am assuming you know them, otherwise what else could have motivated you to apply in the first place?). This will impress your interviewer. You will be a person knowing what she is getting into. You can’t get into battle without being fully prepared. Job-hunting is one of the hardest battles you are going to fight, but there is a high chance of survival if you know and are ready for what you are getting into…

On the left, you have the annoying and impossibly chatty desk buddy. In the center, you have the schmuck of a boss who thinks he is cool. Art imitating life.

In a Savage Land with Rufus Sewell

Rufus Sewell in a Savage Land
Rufus Sewell in a Savage Land. Simply Beautiful.

Evelyn (Maya Stange) is an independent, modern young woman. She marries her anthropology professor and together they go to an island in Papua New Guinea for a field research that will last about a year. There are some other white people on the island – some missionaries and a pearl trader named Mick Carpenter (Rufus Sewell), who seems pretty sure the newlyweds won’t last in this savage land.

Rufus Sewell plays Mick Carpenter in In a Savage Land. I don't think Evelyn's husband would stand a chance even if he wasn't a jerk. Do you?

Her husband (Martin Donovan) Philip is an ambitious man who believes in the novelty of their mission. He also tends to see his wife as his assistant, rather than another fellow anthropologist.

However, Evelyn has no intentions of backing down- she conducts her own research and makes her own connections with the natives. This causes trouble in their marriage and the natives seem to like Evelyn much more than her husband.

Mick is amused by Philips’s self-righteousness and impressed by Evelyn’s determinations and independence. Mick also happens to be complete opposite of her husband in every possible away and Evelyn might be more intrigued by this handsome trader than she should be…

And let’s not forget the time is pre-Word War II…

It is the perfect epic story. The love story is passionate, emotional, exciting but never over-the-top or cheesy. It is never disguised as a twist or something. The poster features Rufus Sewell and Maya Stange together and as soon as the movie starts, Evelyn talks about pearls and meeting another man…

Pros:

– You have the well-structured conflicts.

– Beautiful scenery

– A great love story

– Good actors. Both Maya Stange and Rufus Sewell are amazing.

Cons:

– Much shorter than 2 hours, it leaves you wanting for more…

Directed and co-written by Bill Bennett in 1999.

A solid 8.5 or 9/10.

Pride and Glory with Edward Norton and Colin Farrell

Pride and Glory with Edward Norton, Colin Farrell, Jon Voight and Noah Emmerich
Pride and Glory with Edward Norton, Colin Farrell, Jon Voight and Noah Emmerich. Raymond (Norton) has already lost his love to help protect other cops. He doesn’t want to do the same mistakes but how the hell do you do the right thing when the wrong involves your brother( Emmerich) and brother-in-law (Farrell) ?

When 4 NYPD cops die during an operation, it is especially devastating for Jimmy Eagen (Colin Farrell). It is not exactly an emotional trauma, though. Jimmy and his remaining corrupt group of cops have to clean up the mess before it is too late. However things are going to be much harder; since Jimmy’s father-in-law (Jon Voight) – unaware of his involvement- insists that his son Raymond takes the case. Though unwilling, Raymond (Edward Norton) starts looking into events, and it doesn’t take long before he realizes that there are cops involved behind the crimes and the cops might be too close to home. Is Ray’s brother, also a cop, Francis (Noah Emmerich) involved as well?

Forget about the movie’s name, plot summaries you might read and definitely stay away from the trailer. When I first saw the trailer, I thought: “Shit, another corrupt cop story with family issues thrown in”. Seemed to cliché, too overdone. But the fact is, the movie is much more than any of its promotional elements suggests. It is strong, grabbing and despite all the familiar themes, it stands on its two feet and ends up impresses you. Characters are complicated and they are all flawed.

Colin Farrell puts in a good performance. Edward Norton is in his usual element, although maybe playing Jimmy would have been more fun. Noah Emmerich is just outstanding as Francis- the brother who should have paid more attention to the cops under him, but was too busy taking care of his dying wife.

All in all, this is a good movie with solid performances. There is too much swearing that might distract you from time to time, but considering the characters, it suits them.

It doesn’t have one dull moment in it and the drama is just as exciting as the action.6.7 on imdb. Deserves a 7, at the very least.

Seraphim Falls with Pierce Brosnan and Liam Neeson

Seraphim Falls with Pierce Brosnan and Liam Neeson
Seraphim Falls with Pierce Brosnan and Liam Neeson. Yes, two brilliant Irish actors are playing Americans. Seriously, I am more than happy with the cast!

Made in 2006. Western. Smart, interesting and well, really good.

1868. Carver (Liam Neeson) has 4 men with him to accompany him on his hunt for Gideon (Pierce Brosnan). We don’t really know why. We don’t know who the good guy is, or if even there is one. It is Gideon against 5 men and the wild nature.

But as the movie progresses, we realize Gideon is quick, smart and very strong. It is as dangerous for the men after him as it is for Gideon. I could impress you with a couple of examples, but hey- I don’t want to give even the tiniest of spoilers;)

The movie has great unexpected moments, lovely subtle acting (both Liam and Pierce are perfect), and a solid plot. I am not normally a western fan, but I never overlook a good one.

Plus, the leading of Carver’s men is played by Michael Wincott. And he just makes a fine baddie.

You didn’t recognize him with the short hair? Oh well. Imagine shoulder-length and think The Crow. He is also in Robin Hood: The Prince of Thieves opposite Ralph Fiennes and in Strange Days, making his life hell.

Reasons to see it?

*You mean other than Liam Neeson, Pierce Prosnan and Michael Wincott?

* The script

* The Direction

Don’t miss out on it.
