Shelter starring Brad Rowe and Trevor Wright. Written and directed by Jonah Markowitz. 2007.

Shelter (2007)

Starring Brad Rowe, Trevor Wright

Rowe as Shaun on the left. Wright as Zach on the right.
Rowe as Shaun on the left. Wright as Zach on the right.

California shores. Zach is skate-boarding, surfing working on his art, dealing with his on and off relationship with Tori, taking care of his 5 year old nephew Cody and dealing with the ever demanding and borderline selfish Jeanne (Tina Holmes) – Cody’s mom. He is a busy young man who is not exactly happy with his career options either. Taking shift jobs and barely making ends meet, he also tries to keep his dreams of being an artist alive.

That’s when he runs across Shaun. Shaun’s Zach’s best friend’s big brother. Shaun has become a big shot writer, living in Hollywood. A recent break-up and writer’s block has made him come back to his home town. Shaun is very good-looking, easy-going and fun to be around. The two start surfing and Zach’s world becomes less complicated around him. Or so he thinks…The only catch is that Shaun is gay, and Zach seems to be drawn to him- although during his 20 something years,he has known himself to be  straight. One day-again after a very fun day out together, Shaun kisses Zach. It is soft, repeated and romantic. Zach responds in the same way. However after that Zach is just angry. With himself, with Shaun and pretty much with everyone and everything else. His sister is worried that Zach might be a “fag” and she definitely doesn’t want Shaun around Cody. Tori isn’t happy with Zach’s weird behaviour either. And meanwhile little Cody loves Shaun, who is much better with him than Jeanne ever will be.

But Zach has had enough. He just stops analyzing and sulking- he goes to Shaun’s place. He kisses him the moment Shaun opens the door, leading to a passionate make-out session that leads straight to the bedroom.

It was hot, romantic and passionate all at once. Then Zach is truly happy, in a very long time.  They hang out, stay in and have a blast. Shaun is even willing to postpone going to L.A or better yet, take Zach with him. He is also very supportive of Zach’s dreams. But trouble starts when Shaun’s brother finds out. Zach isn’t happy to face the others, no matter how well-intentional they might be. His sister is also planning to move away with her boyfriend for a while, planning to leave Cody with his uncle. This results in Zach driving Shaun away…

I won’t give away the ending and you should really see the movie for yourself. It is a beautiful movie. It is a great story of love, relationships, family and dreams. It pictures well the struggles we go through to find out who we are. And I believe Shaun represents the perfect partner (whatever your inclinations are) and Zach represents the person on the verge of big decisions…Forget about the title, it is one of my favorite romantic stories ever…

Brad Rowe (Shaun) and Jackson Wurth (Cody). So Shaun is gorgeous, loving, fun, surfing and a writer. And he is good with kids. His character sure seems to good to be true but at least Brad Rowe is a good enough actor to makes him seem real.W

Latter Days starring Wes Ramsey, Steve Sandvoss and Joseph Gordon- Levitt

I don’t really care much for Brokeback Mountain. I had such high hopes for that movie. Being a big fan of Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal and an admirer of Ang Lee, I was sure I was going to watch a feast of a movie. I was wrong. The cinematography was brilliant as the trailer promised but I just failed to like the characters. I saw lust, obsession and possession. Yes, I did see some flicker of the love implied during some scenes, but that was it. I was disappointed. Frankly, I was bored too.

But then I stumbled upon the DVD of Latter Days and saw a really romantic, emotional and fun story.

BEWARE OF SPOILERS!!!

Latter Days starring Wes Ramsey and Steve Sandvoss. Written and directed by C. Jay Cox.

I mostly like Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s work- he has been the part of a wonderful cast in the sitcom 3rd Rock from the Sun- a show that made me laugh till my muscles hurt. I also watched as he can pull of difficult roles like a male hustler in Mysterious Skin and a guy whose past mistakes haunt him, in addition to having to cope with everyday life with severe short term memory lost in the film The Lookout. When I saw his name among the cast, I grabbed Latter Days. It turned out he only had a supporting role, which was just as interesting as his previous roles.

The main story takes place between Christian and Aaron; played respectively by Wes Ramsey and Steve Sandvoss. Christian is plainly and proudly gay and promiscuous. Aaron ,however, is a Mormon missionary. When the young missionaries take residence close to Chris, things get complicated. Confident that he can bag any guy (gay or straight) , gorgeous Chris makes a bet with his flat mate that he can have sex with Aaron in no time. Although starting to be infatuated with Chris, Aaron tries to hide his feelings. After all, homosexuality is considered to be one of the biggest sins and he likes his mission. He does believe in God and (most of ) “the book” ’s teachings.

Another case of straight actors going gay for the roles. I wonder if they found it weird or fun.

While Chris is trying to seduce him (sometimes subtly and sometimes quite openly), the two develop a bond.

And it all goes downhill for our missionary when his friends catch them kissing…

Panicked, he decides to go home to his parents and confront whatever problems await him. But Chris, no longer caring about the bet and totally in love, goes   after him. He catches up with Aaron at the airport, telling him that he loves him.

There in the middle of a snow storm, they share a second kiss-this time initiated by Aaron.

At the airport inn, the two have one of the most beautiful love-making seen on screen. I am saying love-making because I absolutely adore a sex scene that takes place after both characters have fallen madly in love with each other.

Of course conflicts continue for Aaron- he doesn’t want to give up on his family but they do see his feelings for Chris as some type of illness…When Chris wakes up alone, he has to go back to his life in Cali, upset and lovesick.

After going through all the “treatments” his parents make him, he sees a sign that he just should be with Chris.

The scene where they finally get back together is marvelous. But to catch all the beautiful scenes, please check the movie out.

Jonathan Rhys Meyers Movies and Roles

Jonathan Rhys Meyers:

Devilishly gorgeous, incredibly talented, painfully sexy and deliciously Irish…

He has been the face of Hugo Boss, played in a Woody Allen movie (Match Point), starred in The Tudors as Henry the VIII, played a romantic musician in August Rush and performed his own vocals. He has gotten naked in front of a camera. He has played Elvis. He… You get the idea.  He is versatile, and well, not shy.

I was watching this movie called Tangled. TangledPoster-300I had never even heard of it and there he was. I love discovering good yet not so in-your-face popular movies and it is always an amazing bonus when those movies feature a gorgeous film star. The movie is a lovely romantic thriller with some cool twists.

There he was, in his 20s, playing the ultimate fantasy guy: Sexy, passionate, fun, reckless. The girl had it all. Him as a boyfriend and another “great” guy as her best friend. And then things got really complicated. And I was hooked. Both by Jonathan and the movie. It’s a film that shows what you can do with a good script, talented actors and a low budget.

Whatever he was in, I had to see. He did not look like any other actor I had seen. He had a knack for both good guys and bad; so he made a perfect choice where grey areas were concerned. But when he does get to play a romantic role, it is a deadly combination. Have you seen August Rush? It is such a beautiful tale- he also comes in the form of a rock musician who has not gotten over the girl he fell in love with 11 years ago.

I don’t know who the hottest male celebrity is. But I know that Jonathan does have a number one spot in my list.

Forget about dedicating a blog post, I should create a whole blog in his name.

If any guy around you should be jealous of a celebrity, it should be Jonathan.

In August Rush, you just have to believe the amazing power of real love and music. If you can get your head around that, you will just love the quest of a young boy looking for his parents, the guy (Meyers) returning to his dreams and searching for The One- who he lost because of the girl’s manipulative father, and the girl who decides to find his son. jonathan-rhys-meyers-in-august-rushHe is the kind of actor that makes you root for the impossibly (had it not been played by him) unlikable character. Match Point below. He does some nasty stuff: Lying, cheating, marrying into money, and other bad stuff. Yet he makes you believe that somehow he is the victim.

I do like U2 as a band and everything but if there are two celebrities that I celebrate the existence of, they are Pierce Brosnan (he is still sexy) and Jonathan. Don’t you love the amazing acting skills that come with a feast for the eyes?

Jake Gyllenhaal in Donnie Darko. Spooky. Intriguing. Irresistable. Yes, this is a good movie.

Starring: Jake Gyllenhaal, Drew Barrymore, Patrick Swayze, Jena Mal0ne

Written and Directed by: Richard Kelly

This is one weird movie. And having seen it for the second time, I mean this in a good way.

It was a friend’s birthday and we got him a mid-sized figure of the Bunny-rabbit Frank from the movie.

For those of you who haven’t seen it, here is Frank:

500full-donnie-darko-poster Don’t worry. You do get to know what’s with the weird suit, where (most of) Donnie (J. Gyllenhaal) ‘s troubles come from. You will however probably be left with some questions in your head so I suggest the director’s cut.

The plot is too complicated to give it justice but let’s just say Donnie is a troubled upper-middle class teenager who isn’t exactly on great terms with his family. Things get creepier when he starts to see the images of this man-sized rabbit that talks to him and directs him- it even saves Donnie’s life. So Donnie starts doing things that could get him in trouble. So he has to deal with weird teachers (with the exception of the science teacher and the English teacher (Drew Barrymore), the sexual frustrations of an adolescent, the intensity of his feelings for the new girl, his sanity, questions about the possibility of time travel and his psychiatrist… It’s fun, dark, thrilling and well-shot. The music is pretty cool and the plot is original. At least I haven’t seen the same elements combined like this and have a good result.

What the hell is the rabbit doing with Donnie? I find the answer to be original. I don’t think it is as brilliant and breath-taking as the 8.3 ranking it got from the IMDB voters but I think it is a solid 7.5

Give it a shot. Or just watch it again.
