A  ghost writer (Ewan McGregor) is a little bit reluctant about his next assignment. He is not all that into writing a politic memoir, especially when the ghost writer hired before him ended up dead. And while the cause of death is considered to be either suicide or accident, it doesn’t sound like the perfect job. However his agent and the promised fat paycheck persuades him to take on the job.

The memoir he’ll be ghost-writing is of former prime minister of UK, Adam Lang (Pierce Brosnan). His working conditions are far from ideal as he is not allowed to copy or take out the manuscript, has only one month to finish it, the house of Lang’s is in the middle of nowhere, Lang has a discontent wife (Olivia Williams) who is followed by bodyguards wherever she goes and totally despises Lang’s perfectionist assistant Amelia Bly (Kim Catrall), who she suspects of having an affair with her husband.

The conditions get worse when Lang gets accused of war crimes and people are making frantic protests in front of his house. Because of the chaos, now our ghost writer has to stay in the house, and in his dead predecessor’s room. The publishers also want the book finished 2 weeks sooner.

Things get complicated as our writer is not sure who to trust and becomes increasingly convinced that the previous ghost writer was murdered. But who wanted him dead? What the hell is in that memoir? And will they be coming after him as well, whoever they are?

Directed by Roman Polanski, written/adapted by Roman Polanski and Robert Harris, based on the book called The Ghost, written by Robert Harris. The Ghost Writer is a solid, albeit a little slow-paced drama-mystery-thriller with a stellar cast. Pierce Brosnan certainly looks the part of a handsome-actor-turned-politician, Ewan is perfectly tailored for his role and who can blame an ice-cold wife Ruth Lang (icily portrayed by (Olivia Williams) for suspecting her husband was sleeping with his assistant that comes in the form of Kim Catrall, a.k.a Sex and The City’s Samantha. The slow pace is not a negative thing as the movie always holds your attention and keeps you guessing. Some viewers complained about the ending but I personally loved it. 7.8 on Imdb. I probably wouldn’t go as far to rate it a 7.8, but it is definitely above 7. You don’t always find intelligent entertainment. Thumbs up.

Tyler Hawkins (Robert Pattinson)’s older brother Michael has killed himself some years ago. Having been very close, Tyler still can’t seem to have shaken his death. His parents have divorced. He is close with his 11-year-old sister Caroline (Ruby Jerin) and gets along with his mother Diane (Lena Olin). He can’t however communicate with his workaholic father Charles (Pierce Brosnan). Charles seems to be much more interested in his company than his children and Tyler is blaming him for Michael’s death on some level.

Ally (Emilie de Ravin) goes to the same college as Tyler. She has lost her mother 10 years ago. She was killed right in front of her at a subway station. This has caused her to be a one spontaneous person who will do anything to make the best of her life. She has a close relationship with her father Neil (Chris Cooper).

When Tyler meets Ally, what’s supposed to be just a bit of fun, turns into something intense and powerful. They connect at a level neither of them have ever expected. This relationship will cause both of them to confront their fathers, each other and their perspectives on life…

Now, on the surface, having read the plot summary I wrote, you may not be that impressed. You might even be less impressed when you see the trailer. So I strongly advise you to stay away from the trailer and see the movie. I half-expected to see a good movie. After all, I like all the actors here. And despite my sympathy for Pattinson, I saw the movie for Pierce Brosnan and Chris Cooper. Finding out Lena Olin was also in it was a bonus. And the movie wasn’t just good. It was amazing. I guess I don’t have to persuade Robert Pattinson and Twilight fans to go see this movie. I suspect they have already seen it. But for those who don’t like him and the series, forget whatever prejudice or disdain you might be holding against the guy. Forget the popularity and the vampires. See the movie. From the first moment credits roll, you will not be thinking about Twilight, I promise you.

The leading and most difficult role is Pattinson’s. His character could have come off as cliché d, but instead it comes out genuine and powerful. Despite what he has been through, he is not without love, hope and sense of humor. But he is also still in a dark place where he is deeply connected to Michael. His anger for his father makes his life even more difficult.

His relationship with Ally is right in the center but the movie is not all about the romance. It is one of the hundred other things that make the movie worth watching. Their relationship starts with fun and original dialogue and keeps interesting all over the film.

So here you have a movie centered on two lovers that came with baggage, with Tyler’s outweighing Ally’s. There is love, loss, family, friendship, murder, suicide, faith in others and hope. It is engaging, depressing, powerful and sometimes uplifting. Mind you, this is not a feel good movie. It doesn’t however go out of its way to make you feel something. It all happens naturally. Tate Ellinton plays Aidan, Tyler’s roommate/ best friend who provides all the comic relief on his own and lifts up your spirits. Does his actions remind you of your own best friends? He reminded me of mine. But Tate’s fun presence and lines aside, you will feel a lot of things during this movie. But it won’t be an overall happy experience. You will not be reassured and you will not escape reality.

It is 6.7/10 on IMDB. Severely and tragically underrated. It is by far one of the best films I have seen. And I am not a drama addict. I hate Nicholas Sparks’ way of writing, which is creating drama for drama’s sake. This screenplay however is in a league of its own. 9/10. Written by Will Fetters. Directed by Allen Coulter.

A fun note: This is not the first movie Chris Cooper and Pierce Brosnan appeared in a film together.They previously made Married Life together, where they both had leading roles. They don’t have scenes together in this one though. It is a brilliant crime drama that also features Rachel McAdams and Patricia Clarkson. Married Life is a smart little journey with some clever, romantic and dark twists.

The Fourth Protocol with Michael Caine and Pierce Brosnan. Good, old spy thriller from the 80s. Perfect for nostalgia.

Fun, fun, fun. I had a lot of fun watching this movie. It is an old-fashioned, realistic spy-thriller. It is from 1987 so it is perfect if you like getting nostalgic at least once in a while. It is also fun to find a younger Caine and a much younger Brosnan.

Michael Caine plays John Preston. Preston is from British Intelligence, a smart guy who pisses the hell out if his superior and finds himself reassigned to a boring department: Ports. But he soon realizes that this assignment won’t be tedious at all- someone is smuggling various bomb parts into the country and it is not just any bomb…

Pierce Brosnan plays Valerie Petrofsky, a valuable KGB asset assigned to a very dangerous mission.

As the movie progresses, we realize that Valerie is not shy when it comes to following orders, even when it means killing people – Russian or not.

Preston will have to contact with his superior’s superiors and try to solve the catch Petrofsky as fast as he can. After all, the bomb being assembled is an atomic bomb…

Good political thriller. The only thing that bugged me about the movie is that sometimes the exaggerated music gets in the way. The music is loud and what is presumably supposed to be ominous ends up being irritated. Maybe it is an 80s thing – where everything was big and exaggerated. But it kind of kills the buzz when every possible twist and turn is announced so loudly. Still, it is a good time, watching Caine and Brosnan. It was even more entertaining to see the previous James Bond play a bad guy. His character is cool, cold-blooded and mysterious. He is more into action than talking and this sets the mood just right.

Strongly recommend for:

-          Pierce and Caine fans (I am fans of both)

-          Fans of political/spy thrillers

-          Ones who do like to get retro when it comes to movies

Seraphim Falls with Pierce Brosnan and Liam Neeson. Yes, two brilliant Irish actors are playing Americans. Seriously, I am more than happy with the cast!

Made in 2006. Western. Smart, interesting and well, really good.

1868. Carver (Liam Neeson) has 4 men with him to accompany him on his hunt for Gideon (Pierce Brosnan). We don’t really know why. We don’t know who the good guy is, or if even there is one. It is Gideon against 5 men and the wild nature.

But as the movie progresses, we realize Gideon is quick, smart and very strong. It is as dangerous for the men after him as it is for Gideon. I could impress you with a couple of examples, but hey- I don’t want to give even the tiniest of spoilers;)

The movie has great unexpected moments, lovely subtle acting (both Liam and Pierce are perfect), and a solid plot. I am not normally a western fan, but I never overlook a good one.

Plus, the leading of Carver’s men is played by Michael Wincott. And he just makes a fine baddie.

You didn’t recognize him with the short hair? Oh well. Imagine shoulder-length and think The Crow. He is also in Robin Hood: The Prince of Thieves opposite Ralph Fiennes and in Strange Days, making his life hell.

Gerard Butler

This is not about critics, imdb ratings or box office results. It is my favorites from one of my fav. actors. If you want to share your thoughts on Gerard, you are more than welcome to do it here.

1) Law Abiding Citizen (2009)

This movie is a wonderful thriller that makes you question a lot of things, including who the bad guys/good guys in the movie. I side with Gerard Butler’s Clyde on most of his avenging acts, despite a couple of things. This movie isn’t perfect but it is pretty damn good. If you like your story smart, your “hero” on the “darker” side and enjoy a good revenge story, do not miss it. For the ones who have seen it, here is a review:

2) Butterfly on a wheel (2007)

I tend to like a movie more if it has some of the actors I love. This movie has 3: Pierce Brosnan, Gerard Butler and Maria Bello. A perfect marriage, a perfect kidnapping, an unpredictable criminal with strange requests. Or maybe the crime makes perfect sense and our “hero” Neil is not so perfect after all. No spoilers.

4) The Ugly Truth (2009)

Men are cocky, superficial and all you need to get one is to be thin, own some hot lingerie and give blow-jobs. Women are hopeless dreamers who are equally supeficial. They want romance if it is provided by a handsome guy with a good job. Or maybe things aren’t just simple and the truth isn’t that ugly. This R-rated romantic comedy shows us some reality with hilarious scenes, likable characters and predictable yet enjoyable twists. For the review including screen shots:

5) Dear Frankie (2004)

One modest sweetheart of a movie that wins you over with the acting and storytelling; not with the originality of the script. Frankie is a smart but deaf boy raised by his mother and grandmother. Their whereabouts are hidden from his violent father. His mother Lizzie does everything to protect him from the truth, so she writes to him as his father: a nice man, a sailor who can not be with them because of work. Of course a coincidence forces Lizzie to find a man to pose as the father. What she hasn’t planned on how this stranger (Gerard Butler) will connect both with her and Frankie:

Holly (Swank) and Gerry (Butler) are a happily married couple and still madly in love. When Gerry suddenly dies, Holly has difficulty in coping. Pierce Brosnan

Oh come on, I had to refer to James Bond. It is a classic. And given that Pierce Brosnan is my all time favorite Bond, I earned that introduction. Yep, you read it right. It is not Sean Connery. And heaven forbid, it is definitely not Daniel Craig (although he might be my least favorite). To me, Daniel is so…not charismatic or charming or attractive (and Bond should really be all those things)! And he is so…so…so blond! (I had this funny conversation with my friend where she counter argued that she does not object to a Bond with blond hair but a blond Batman should never have existed- a.k.a Val Kilmer. Val is my favorite Batman so..each to her own, I guess.) Anyways, Pierce is the man. He is the perfect 007. He is hot and well-built. It doesn’t take a lot to seduce women. I wish Pierce could have played James Bond a couple of more times- the guy grows even more handsome with age anyway. He used to be a pretty boy who has turned into this gorgeous man. He also has this contagious smile that seems to bring out all his lust for and joy of life.

He is not just an action actor by any means. Sure, he has done a good job with Thomas Crown Affair as well but putting Pierce in romantic roles is a damn good idea. Have you seen the 2004 movie Laws of Attraction? It is a typical rom-com so if you are expecting something different, that ain’t it. However romantic comedies aren’t really about the endings or twists anyway. Let’s go through the elements.

Clichés?

1) The leading female Audrey (Julianne Moore) is a lawyer who is organized,almost to the point of obsessiveness. Now the writers do love to portray women as annoyingly tidy and men messy, right?

2) Our male lead Daniel (Pierce Brosnan) is also a lawyer who could not have been less organized. He is messy,funny and charming.

3) The female is pessimistic is about love yet our male – despite being a divorce lawyer- is just a happy-go-lucky romantic. Now I haven’t seen a guy that fun, smart, attractive and entertaining who also happens to be a romantic. And yes it will take only a little time for him to develop feelings for the cynical yet likable Audrey.

4) Opposites attract. Rivals are attracted to each other. Yeah, whatever.

5) You know it is a happily after. Check out the genre and the poster.

BUT…

1) I like Julianne Moore and I like Pierce Brosnan. He definitely pulls out scruffy well. And frankly I’d rather watch a typical rom-com then over-pretentious and disappointing drama/thrillers like Blindness or The Forgotten.

2) The storyline It is fun. You see Audrey and Daniel meet as opposing councils during a trial. They realize the other one is a worthy opponent and after some fun and games, Daniel and Audrey go out on a dinner, supposedly not a date. Of course when the story mixes mutual attraction with heavy alcohol and fun and…yeah, they have sex. However the next day they do have a trial to attend to and Daniel has picked this exact moment to take Audrey seriously and looks more professional and efficient whereas you can tell that Audrey had a “wild” night. Moreover, Daniel also uses a below-the-belt trick at the trial and wins. Of course Audrey declares war and from then on, the competition gets tough and fun, reaching a peak when Daniel gets a client Audrey is after: a famous fashion designer (Parker Posey) divorcing her cheating rocker husband Thorne (Michael Sheen). So Audrey strikes back by signing Thorne. The case research requires a trip to couple’s estate in Ireland and Ireland…is a lovely country, full of potential for romance. So it seems like Audrey and Daniel are best buddies compared to their spiteful clients and another night full of fun and drinks leads to…let’s say more than just sex: Marriage… How the hell are two competing divorce lawyers gonna explain this to the judge?

3) I love rockers and I love rock and I appreciate the humor that comes with it. Michael Sheen is so funny as the spoiled musician.

So…

The movie is fun. If you like Pierce Brosnan/Michael Sheen/Julianne Moore and/or romantic comedies, you shouldn’t miss it. Otherwise, well…try something else.

Gerard Butler

If there’s a Scot that threatens to be as famous as Sean Connery, it is Gerard Butler. He has been around since 1997 but his current incredibly famous status came with 300. Oh, but I managed to ignore that. You see, I am fan of epic movies in the classical sense; you know-the ones that are shot in actual location and not in front of a blue screen. Movies like Braveheart and Troy. So I blissfully ignored the yellowish colored tale of the 300 Spartans. But when “P.S.: I love you” came out, I was sold. Yes, I prefer a decent romantic movie over movies with CGI. But this movie was more than decent:

P.S. I LOVE YOU (2007) :

It was based on the book of the same name by Cecilia Ahern. And though I have read the book, I loved the movie so much more. In fact, I thought that Gerard Butler brought so much spirit to the character. He brought substance that I found somewhat missing from the book. He plays Gerry. An adorable,romantic and a full of life Irish guy who meets the love of his life- the free-spirited and colorful American Holly during her trip there. Well, actually the story is much more complicated than that. Before the credits we find out that Holly and Gerry have been married for 9 years, they are not exactly into money and have some typical marital problems. But unlike other couples, even the worst of fighting ends in making out and us realizing how mad they are still about each other. And after the credits, we learn that Gerry has died of a brain tumor, and Holly has to cope with his death. But Gerry, the lovely guy that he is, has made a plan- so that he can help Holly coping with his death. He has written her letters- each to arrive at a specif time, each including instructions and ending with the note “P.S I love you”. As Holly reads the letters and is forced to get out there and do what Gerry’s letters say, we see -not chronological- flashbacks of their relationship: how they met,fell in love, and how great they were together.

All though there are some elements of the movie that I didn’t like- (such as Holly’s interaction with Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s character. I absolutely love Dean Morgan but some of his scenes with Holly just didn’t feel right), it is still beautiful and very heart-warming. BUTTERFLY ON A WHEEL (2007) :

Then came Butterfly on a Wheel. A low-budget, solid thriller with Pierce Brosnan and Maria Bello.

Butler plays Neil Randall, a brilliant advertising executive whose life is just perfect: the perfect marriage with a beautiful woman (Maria Bello), a lovely daughter and an amazing career. But one day as he is in the car with his wife, the car is hijacked by Pierce Brosnan‘s character Tom Ryan: They are to do exactly what Tom asks them to do, or Tom’s partner-who has their daughter-is going to kill her. His demands are complicated and hard to accomplish. They don’t know about his motives either. All they know is that Tom is dangerous and they have to find a way to survive this. Of course the premise looks simple. But the plot twists and events make sure this is not a typical story. In fact, it is the kind of a thriller that I hope I can manage to write someday. The acting performances are just as solid as the screenplay. So this time Gerard‘s character is not as simple and likable as the one in P.S. I love you. In fact, as the movie progresses, your feelings and thoughts constantly change as you try to figure out this multi-layered character.

Nim’s island was a nice little family picture with Jodie Foster and Rocknrolla certainly satisfied director Guy Ritchie ‘s fans. I guess I am not such a big fan of his typical story telling with some dark humor thrown in for good measure. I can’t just be pulled into his movies. So even with Butler‘s presence, Rocknrolla was not my cup of tea. But then , The The Ugly Truth came out.

I already did a post on this extremely entertaining movie so I am not going to go into detail. But let me just say that, Butler can pull of comedy. He can play a seemingly shallow and one dimensional character who slowly shows his true colors. He is charming, funny,obnoxious and attractive all the same time. He also shows he can dance and boy, I have to admit I wish I were Katherine Heigl even just for the sake of that dance floor scene. Click here for The Ugly Truth review and trailer.

So of course after this movie I looked for Gerry’s previous work. And the ones that I found were good and highly impressive. The change in his looks and diversity of his roles were also something to talk about. He plays the Phantom in The Phantom of the opera- the musical was much more rock-n-roll than I expected and Gerry can sing. Yeah, I had noticed that when he was playing the guitar and singing in P.S:I love you. He has that sexy rock voice and his just might be my favorite version of the classic Mustang Sally. Dear Frankie is a lovely story where he pretends to be the father of a deaf kid. The man is hired by the kid’s mom so his dreamworld wouldn’t be shattered. He is the Dracula in Dracula 2000. With his long, jet black long hair, clean shaven pace and younger looks, he is barely recognizable. Then there is the tale of Beowulf and Grendel- where he plays the mythical hero Beowulf. There are many more movies that I culdn’t find yet. But he has new projects are on the way.

It is always a breath of fresh air when you encounter an actor who is good at any role, look and accent. Butler is multi-talent, extremely masculine and I have no objections to the fact that he is just so handsome. Well, I am just glad Scotland gave us another great actor.

Pierce Brosnan. I love this guy. He just looks freakin' gorgeous. He plays Robert Pattinson's father in Remember Me? You take the son and I'll take Pierce. Deal?

Pierce Brosnan is in his 50s. He looks much better than he did in his 30s. Of course I am talking about certain type. Fun, funny, confident, modest, not afraid to kick as and a true romantic at heart. I hate the word old-fashioned, yet when it comes to romance,the guy who can pull it off, just scores big on the sexiness chart. But the thing is it has to be passionate and heart-felt and in no way pretentious.

Andrew Mccarthy plays this billionaire in Lipstick Jungle where he sends cars and jets and pulls out all the stunts, to take her to a date. He can afford it and he enjoys it. But here is the thing, attraction kicks money’s ass. For me,at least. So trust me I pick a gorgeous yet struggling 25 year old over the old and unattractive guy any time. But here is the thing: this character Andrew is playing- is cool.

Andrew McCarthy as Joe Bennet, Lipstick jungle. Shame the show had only 2 seasons. It was a lot of fun to watch and Andrew had that charm that almost reminded me of Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice.

Charismatic. Funny. And pretty cute. He does look good in his suit—and I happen to label suits as turn offs so many times! So it is the jokes and the voice and the smile and, get ready- he is there for the girl. Bingo!!! Ad trust me I have seen Andrew in movies where he was 20 something and he was not half as attractive.
My friend couldn’t have been more indifferent to Andy Garcia (not his acting she was just not into his looks), yet after watching one particular movie- she would’t mind kissing the character he was portraying. He is what? 39 in that movie? An ex gangster with a conscience? Suits and no jeans?

Andy Garcia. Smooth. Very smooth. In case you are wondering, it is a really neat film.

  But then the way he picked the girl he became besotted with…He might have said some cheesy stuff but it is the voice, and the way he looks at girl,how he means what he says: that he may not be able to take her breath away, but he will try. Honesty, charm and more charm. Not to mention sincere and funny. She was so intrigued, she agreed on a date despite having a boyfriend. The date was so fun and romantic, she invited him in afterwards. Don’t get me started on the way he kisses…. Oh, did I mention I am more into tall,well-built dark blondes who wear jeans and plain t-shirts and have long or longish hair? But what wins me in the end is a good kisser. A good kisser is the one who makes you want more. Who doesn’t push your limits and follows your lead instead. Who knows that the more you like someone, the more passionate the sex gets and it just becomes more fun and more satisfying for both. He can kiss her cheek or forehead or the eye yet you can feel that the girl is already wanting him- and she is getting high just because of a kiss!!!!! The word we use is devour…Oh boy!!! He devours her, and puts his whole being into a kiss…and she ends up craving him more than anything or anyone else…

So, excuse me but I like sense of fun coming with maturity. Just like i want romance and fun at the same time. So basically, I am screwed. I have a feeling that these combinations exist only in movies…Oh well, doesn’t stop me from wanting it….
