Pulp Fiction: The most overrated movie ever!

Pulp Fiction with Uma Thurman

Yep, Uma Thurman looks gorgeous. Doesn't she always?

Pulp Fiction to me is the most overrated film in cinema history. I haven’t met anyone who doesn’t like it in real life (my parents don’t count) and I went to the IMDB board to see there were any “weird” people like me that didn’t like it. I did find some and frankly I was surprised. Hell, the movie is rated 8.9 (by about 385.000 people) and is considered to be one of the best films ever. What???

I can get its quirky appeal. I can understand the appreciation for the cast. I mean you have John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson, Tim Roth, Eric Stoltz….

It has a great soundtrack. Who can forget the cool “Girl, you will be a woman soon”?

But where the hell is the script? A lot of things happen in the movie yet nothing happens. Yes, it is pulp fiction and it is all pulp. Fluff. But it is not mindless entertainment. It is mindless, but where the hell is the entertainment? I can’t see the marvel in Tarantino’s direction and I don’t see the humor. Especially about a black man being ….. in the a…

Not my cup of tea. Sorry.

It is  one my least favorite films. Alright, fans- you are welcome to share your despise for my review. And others, please let me know if/why you agree.

I agree. The movie was too fixated upon itself. From all the references to other works of fiction (TV and movies), to the interlocking plot twists, to the (unnecesary) non-linear storyline, it was just not too good. It was artistic without substance. It was mush, and prided itself upon its non-resolute nature. Classic example was the scene where Uma’s character is reflected into the TV, as if she was in the show that was displayed on screen. HOW CLEVER!!! (not). We get it. The film was a metafictional reference to pop culture and various movies/fictious scenes (such as the gay-rape scene which was just brutally lame in my opinion). In the end, the movie says a lot, without saying anything, which is why most ultra post-modern, pseudo-metafictional movies just suck.

Most people who like it do so because they feel they’ll look stupid if they don’t agree with all the other dull viewers.

Wow. I am so not used to finding people who don’t like Pulp Fiction, I can’t even begin to tell how refreshing your comment felt. I have a lot of friends (or ex online friends-because they thought I just can not not like Pulp Fiction) who think I am downright tasteless or just a poor soul who doesn’t know a thing about movies. Oh, please! I have been doing my best to tell people that art is relative but Tarantino fans seem to disagree with me most on this subject. A lot of people are actually acting like cinema didn’t exist or movie-making wasn’t a form of art before Tarantino came along. One teacher I had at college went even as far as to tell me I shouldn’t study film-making because I don’t like Tarantino’s work in general ( although I’m willing to give Inglorious Basterds a try. Can’t be worse than this one, at the very least). Oh, and that teacher is in the field of business administration. His opinion must be so right and final (sarcasm).

I don’t like Pulp Fiction. So f***ing what?

It’s rare, I’ll grant you that. I just rewatched it on AMC the other day, and wanted to read some honest criticism of it. Had some trouble, but stumbled upon this site and decided to vent. For me, it’s not so much the movie sucks, but that everyone too dumb to understand the movie thinks its “awesome” in fear of looking stupid if they say they don’t like it. It’s not that I hate Tarantino either, its just I think he’s overrated and would like to read some critiques on his movies that aren’t mindless praise.

I have nothing against Tarantino either. I sort of enjoyed Jackie Brown but his fascination with long shots of Uma Thurman’s feet
was killing me in Kill Bill.
It is downright scary that Pulp Fiction is rated to be the best 5th movie ever on IMDB’s list. It is cool that Tarantino is doing
his own thing, but I just can’t stand his fans adoring everything he does and claiming everyone who doesn’t worship him is stupid.
I pretty much prefer when he is acting because he does have that unique face and he really cracked me up with his small role in Desperado.
