I am not so sure about that. The author is too intent on making everyone cry that he forgets that the reason most people tune in to such stories is that they want the bad stuff in real life. So here you give them loves that seem to good to be true and then finish it off by killing at least one of the characters. That really seems like drama for drama's sake rather than personal, inpiring or moving. But it is just me. By the way, I loved Message in a Bottle, A Walk to Remember and especially Nights in Rodanthe- right until teh very end.
The notebook was better in the ending department but not good enough to set at least one different mood for one story...

Yeah it sucks. The formula is used in lots of tv shows as well. I never create drama just to create drama in my own stories.
But, it might be girly but I do love male characters that are either misunderstood (Richard Gere's) or bad boys that go good (Shane West's in A Walk to Remember). Fantasy. Maybe less realistic than a futuristic sci-fi movie. But it is fun to watch nonetheless. Still, I will always like writers that write for fun and that want the audience to have fun...

But sometimes dramas are so good, they feel natural. Have you seen The Painted Veil with Edward Norton and Naomi Watts? I adore that movie.

Yes I saw them all and I'm furious because I feel used. I never read this author and I never will. I like how you said it "drama for drama’s sake". It's stupid and annoying. My comment about The Notebook wasn't for its beauty but for its laboratory mice's path. At point one: two old people; at point two: memories; at point three: a view of the desease; at point four: sweet and melting youth love; at point five: those days are gone; at point six: goodmorning despair... and so on. Is like a precise pattern to suicide. It's so easy to sell like that. Tears always work but you feel like you're watching always the same movie...

I resent that:) I get unhappy endings all the time in real life. And unless you are going to make a masterpiece, stay away from making drama for drama's sake! Did you see the other 3? I love them all individually but once you connect the dots, it is pretty annoying.
And you can't expect me to love the writer when he kills such great male characters. Especially not when they are played by Costner or Gere;)

What can I say? It is not nice to play with the feelings just to sell! Tragedy works, tears are powerful and heartache is guaranteed :)
