When successful corporate lawyer Kenya ( Sanaa Lathan) is set up on a blind date, she is less than pleased to see that her date is Brian Kelly (Simon Baker). Not that Brian isn’t good-looking. He is. The problem? He is white. So Kenya doesn’t even give him a chance. But after a chance encounter and a situation she can’t get out of, she decides to hire Brian as a landscape architect for her garden. Even though she thinks they don’t have much in common, their personalities and taste seem to be opposite and she can’t look past the racial issues, she finds herself falling for Brian. Once she lets go, they start having a great relationship. But there will always be doubts (mostly racial) and prejudices on her part.  This eventually drives them art. But then she meets Mark (Blair Underwood)-an ambitious black man also working in the corporate world. Obviously he is not without issues. But most importantly, he is not Brian…

The movie is a sweet little romance. I know it is labeled as a romcom but I don’t think it has many funny moments. It is as romantic as its supposed to be with all the right amount of complications and obstacles. It is fun and completely harmless but nothing to tell the home about really. 6.6 on IMDB. 6/10 from me. Well, obviously if you want me to rate according to the screen time and the beauty level of Simon Baker, than it is a 10/10. If you do like Baker, yeah- you should watch it. I enjoyed it. Plus, it was a fun change to see Simon in casual wear after watching him in suits all the time in The Mentalist.

Favorite Lines – Obviously, they came from Brian.

Kenya: I don’t do dogs.

Brian: Neither do I. We’re just friends.

***

Brian: I take it you don’t do white guys.

Kenya: I just happen to prefer black men. It’s not a prejudice, it’s a preference.

Brian: Sure, it’s your preference to be prejudiced.

***

Brian: I love you.

Kenya: I don’t know what to say.

Brian: Should I give you a hint?

***

Castle vs The Mentalist: Comparing Two Addictive Shows

The Mentalist starring Simon Baker
The Mentalist starring Simon Baker. The guy can read you like a book. No point in hiding anything. His brilliance is not without a sense of humor either. Image from: http://www.iwebie.com
Castle starring Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic
Castle starring Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic. Well, maybe Castle and Detective Kate Beckett aren't as good at manipulation and reading people as Patrick Jane but they sure do have a unique way of brainstorming. Image from: http://2.bp.blogspot.com

I love both of these shows and I wrote introduction posts for both of them on my blog. But being a big fan who refuses to miss even one episode, I decided to write more on this fun topic. And after realizing many similarities between the shows, I decided to make this joint post.

If you need background info, you might check out my posts on The Mentalist and Castle. So, let’s roll with the fun similarities:

  1. Both Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) and Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion) are really good looking. They know it and they like it.
  2. Both men love mind games. They also have a wicked sense of humor and they love misbehaving.
  3. However Patrick is much less responsive to attention- since he lost his wife and kid a while ago.
  4. Both  men “consult” on the murder cases. Castle relies on his background information and his writer’s instincts.  Patrick Jane is an awesome “mentalist” who is just great at reading people.
  5. Both California Bureau of Investigation (CBI- assisted by Jane) and NYPD (assisted by Castle) have closed many cases, thanks to the main characters- whether their teammates accept it or not.
  6. Even though their teams don’t always agree with them, they like their unorthodox helpers and have gotten used to the situation.
  7. Both guys have very personal motives in helping the cases. Castle first needed to step in because a copycat murderer was committing the crimes as depicted  in Castle’s novels. Then he realized the female detective and these cases would make for a great inspirational source. Patrick’s motives are can be considered more noble. He is after the serial killer who killed his wife and child. He is assisting the other cases for redemption and to have a sense of purpose.
  8. Both Castle and Jane love being inappropriate: asking too direct questions, eating at the crime scene, enjoying the idea of being involved in a murder case… Both are originally good guys who just happen to like the thrill.
  9. Both get to get in the investigation room. Simon Baker’s Patrick Jane however gets to use more “inappropriate” methods such as hypnosis. Not that he is allowed but it does get confessions.
  10. They make a great team with the “boss”- the female detective in charge.
  11. In both cases, team members provide comic relief in addition to the lead characters’ fun behavior.
  12. Both men have a flirty/friendly relationships with the female detectives.

Castle starring Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic
Castle's famous duo: Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic - Richard Castle and Kate Beckett. Will these two ever get it out of their system already? Well, we will see. Photo from: http://static.tvguide.com/

There are obviously many differences:

–          Such as Castle is a happily divorced man (yes, he couldn’t be happier he is divorced) and his only daughter is alive and well.

–          Castle provides the same amount of comic relief  in each episode. The Mentalist is more of a drama/thriller so some episodes can get heavy- especially if it is about the serial killer Jane’s after.Castle also gets the right idea about the case by brainstorming with her daughter or just simply through a conversation.

–          The attraction between Castle and Beckett is obvious. Jane and Lisbon are more friends than anything else. Jane is still mourning. Even though Castle and Beckett have feelings for each other, they just don’t act on it.

–          Beckett’s boss is fond of Castle and loves having him around. Lisbon’s bosses? They are not exactly crazy about Jane.

If you have anything to add, please comment away.

Album Review: Emiliana Torrini – Me and Armini

The moment I heard Jungle Drum, I was hooked. If you haven’t heard this catchy and lively tune yet, I dare you to go to you tube, and write emiliana torrini jungle drum and check the song out. It is fun and it makes me dance. So naturally, I wanted to get a hold of the other songs as well. If they were nearly as fun, I’d be in for a real treat. Don’t get me wrong, the album isn’t bad. It is just not my cup of tea. And there are no other songs like Jungle Drum in the album. Gun is OK and so is Fireheads. But if I am going to be tempted by quality pop beats, it either has the rock element like Roxette songs or it should have the irresistibly upbeat and addictive nature of Jungle Drum.

Most of the songs are too slow and a little too monotonous for my taste. The beats are too repetitive. Sure, if you like that particular beat, it is cool. If you don’t, the song ends up being boring or annoying.

It is more like a headache album. I am not saying it gives you a headache. It should be listened to when you have a headache. Slow. Relaxing. Comforting. It is also a good album for meditating. But of course you have just read the review of an avid rock fan who complains when Bon Jovi gets too  many “romantic”  songs in the albums. Also, my favorite Guns’ N Roses song is Paradise City. Not Don’t Cry, not Patience or November Rain. In fact Patience is what I call a headache song.

But…it doesn’t look like I’ll be getting bored of Jungle Drum anytime soon. In fact, I am just turning it on to dance. See you at my other posts!

The Back-up Plan starring Jennifer Lopez and Alex O’Loughlin

The Back-up Plan starring Jennifer Lopez and Alex O'Loughlin
The Back-up Plan starring Jennifer Lopez and Alex O'Loughlin. The idea might have been fresher 10 years ago. Image from: http://tengossip.com/

Zoe (Jennifer Lopez) has wanted to get married and have kids but since she hasn’t been able to meet the right guy (not even come close), she decides to get pregnant through the sperm bank.  She gets the “operation” and right on that day, she meets a handsome young guy called Stan (Alex O’Loughlin). Stan is fun, honest and interesting. And he doesn’t have a clue what Zoe has done. Zoe decides to hang around with him. After all he can’t be The One, right? But as it turns out, he is and he is not all that pleased when he finds out. But despite the “challenge”, he really is crazy about Zoe and wants to try to make it work. Just as Stan tries to get his  head around the idea, he finds out that Zoe’ll be having twins. After that, it is all romantic and domestic chaos. Combined with Stan’s freaking out and Zoe’s trust issues, their relationship hits more than a few bumps on the road.

OK. So you really don’t need me to tell you that they will end up together and will live happily ever after.

After all, it is a typical romantic comedy. The problem is, it is mostly too typical. Don’t get me wrong, I am a fan of the genre. But when the story feels too formulated and too familiar, you should get worried.

Obviously, you can’t change certain things about the genre. Two people have to fall in love with each other at some point. This should be the case, otherwise there won’t be a story in this category. But there should be limits on how many clichés you are going to use.

Is  it as bad as some people make it to be?

Frankly, I don’t think you will be bored to death. While I totally suggest boys to stay away from the movie at all costs, girls (especially Moonlight fans) will at least have Alex O’Loughlin to look at. But, even if you are just a tad sarcastic, you may get bored. I am not saying there aren’t any scenes that I didn’t like. There are some pretty funny scenes. But if you thought it was bad in the beginning, there is no point in keeping it up. Because I thought it was OK until Stan found out about the baby issues.

5/10 from me. As I said, it is not that bad. But it is too mediocre to be anything special. Or maybe it is because I don’t want kids at all and therefore thought the whole idea was just not believable. You decide.
